4-H is like a smorgasbord!
It may be that I’m hungry or that when you think of November / December you think of the holidays and eating and for
some of us, overeating. But when I started to write, it became quite clear to me that 4-H is like a smorgasbord.
When you become a 4-H member you have the opportunity to fill your plate heaping full with club activities, county
projects, state and national opportunities. You have the chance to return again and again trying new things or keep taking
what you like best.
I do realize the trouble we ask for when we try to add more to an already full plate. Either you can’t finish or you don’t
feel well afterwards. But then there are the picky eaters in the family who no matter how many options there are, there
will never be enough to choose from and there is always room on the plate for more. Then of course there are the people
who know their limits and only take what they can finish, feel great afterwards, and will return for more later.
I have seen ALL of these people in 4-H – those who keep adding on, those who need to be a little more adventurous and
try some new things, and those who have filled their plate with just the right amount. We will all have different sized
plates to work with but try your hardest to not overfill your plate.
The other beauty of a smorgasbord is that even though you may fill yourself up, you don’t always have to eat the same
thing! This is SO true about 4-H. If you try something and don’t like it, there are many more opportunities from which to
choose.
So………..which plate are you carrying? Are you willing to try some new things for this 4-H year? There are numerous
opportunities in which to participate in AND if you have an idea that you would like to try, give me a call and we can add
it to the menu.
Here’s to happy and healthy “eating.” Enjoy the season.

***New***Illustrated Talk: An illustrated talk is
another means of sharing information and educating
an audience about a specific subject. It is an oral
presentation in which the member uses
posters/illustrations or objects to emphasize/illustrate
specific points in the speech. A member does not

an illustrated talk. This is a fair entry, so regular fair
ribbons are used and premiums are earned,
intermediate and seniors could be chosen to go to the
State Fair. If you enter an illustrated talk, remember
to sign up for demonstrations & communications on

for illustrated talks individual and team (2 members).

Thank you to all the adults in St. Croix County who
have volunteered to be leaders! Your role is critical
as you help us to extend the University resources as

a positive role model for youth in our county is also
important in providing supportive environments for
the youth you work with throughout the year.

THE SHOWCHOIR IS LOOKING FOR
MUSICIANS:
The Alternative Project was originally set up for
those that could not attend a meeting due to other
obligations. The judges strongly emphasized
(recommended) that the photography members that
have been in the project for 3 or more years should be
reaching out to learn more through other means. This
could be shadowing a photographer, taking a
photography class through community ed or other
place, helping with the year book, doing the
Leadership Project and helping younger club
members with their photography (that would be two
projects in one), taking a fieldtrip with other
photography members and taking pictures and then
getting together to go over them (my farm is always
available for this and I would love to help!), and
other ideas too!! I have updated the Alternative
Project Form and right now it is on the Facebook
page. Please make sure you are using the 2017.
Watch for more information on this in the next
Newsletter and on our Facebook page.
The St. Croix County 4-H Showchoir needs a bass
guitar & guitar player in the 2016 shows and
performances. If you are interested in performing
with the choir, please contact director, Nancy
Burman at music_mommy@hotmail.com.

All meetings will be held at the Ag Services and
Education Center in Baldwin. If you have any

Project and the Auction
December 5 (snow date December 12)
This rule affects beef, lamb, pork, chicken & goats;

at the time of weigh in.
Ask for documentation – exhibitors need to make
sure they collect documentation from the seller when
purchasing livestock.

the first Monday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Ag
Service Building/4-H Extension building.
To name a few:
 Raising sufficient funds to allow the Fair Board
to retire the loan on the Dairy Complex - a
$450,000 project completely funded!
 Another record setting May Fair Event & Sale
again netting ~ $20,000
 4-H Club support both as sales teams for the
Renovations for Generations Raffle and in
direct support. Direct support, led by Roberts
Ribbon Reapers, totaling more than $15,000
from all clubs since 2007!!
 The decision of the Saint Croix Central High
School FFA Chapter to dedicate a portion of
their 2015 Corn Drives towards funding for
Horse Barn #1.
 The Dairy Committee Partnership which has
continued to “fuel” support by the Ag
Community, particularly with support for the
May Fair Event & Sale and the Fall
Commodity Drive
 The beginning of a partnership with the Horse
Committee. A building committee under the
leadership of Terry Mitchell has been formed,
fundraising projects are underway and
significant funds have already been raised.
 Continued broad support across the county
from community organizations, individuals and
businesses including the ag community.
 Recently announced plans by the County and
the Fairboard to move forward with installation
of a water main terminating at the Horse
Complex site. This project will have major
impact on developing the Complex.
 Heard that Wildwood & Springbrook 4-H
Clubs enjoyed a great afternoon of bowling at
Gibby's Lanes. They also included Grace Place
residents - a great community service outreach!
(Wildwood was the top Raffle Ticket selling
club with $73/member and Springbrook was #2
with $42/member.)

Horse Project update
The horse project members were busy this summer
and what a great year it was. We want to start by
thanking all our volunteer clinicians. These are a
great group of adult leaders that teach our kids
throughout the summer. Last year we held 47 clinics
along with 1 all day camp for our novice members
and a 3 day overnight camp at the fairgrounds in
June. We could not run our program without these
great volunteers.
At the fair the kids had the opportunity to show at
four different shows in 5 different disciplines. We
really give the kids lots of opportunities to learn new
things and how to safely handle and show their
horse. We did something new this year by holding a
year-end banquet in September. This was a great
event where the kids and parents had time to visit, eat
and high point awards were handed out. This really
gave the kids the recognition they deserved.
Fundraising for a horse barn has been underway for
many years starting back more than 5 years ago with
the “Adopt a Stall Fundraiser”. With that fundraiser
along with a donation from the St. Croix County
Leaders Council last year we were able to purchase a
total of 60 stalls. The more stalls we purchase the
less we have to rent every year for the fair. This last
year we held a tack swap in February raising
approximately $500, completed our first Schwan’s
cares campaign in June raising just under $600 along
with a benefit horse show in Sept. where we raised
just over $1,200. We are looking for a fundraising
chair and for members to be involved in the May Fair
committee. If you are interested please contact
Bridget Lentz pblentz@sbcglobal.net. Our next

We are trying to raise money to build the new horse
