Ascension of Our Lord Secondary School Department of Health & Physical Education PPL 2O1 – Grade 10 Course Outline Teachers: Ms. Clark/Ms. Magistrale Course Name: Healthy Active Living, Open Course Code: PPL 201 The Physical and Health Education Department of Ascension of Our Lord encourages you to participate in as many sporting activities, teams, and clubs as possible. We also encourage you to get involved into the Phys. Ed. Department. Volunteering and participating are always encouraged and there are a multitude of opportunities around the school to get involved. Much help is needed in the area of scorers, lines people, officials, timekeepers, team managers, and participants in intramural events. Sports make a difference in your education and so can you! The goals of our program are to assist students in: Developing a positive attitude towards lifetime participation in physical activity Developing a sense of self-worth Developing a cooperative, sportsperson like attitude towards others Developing and maintaining a level of physical fitness Acquiring effective skills and knowledge to enjoy a wide variety of individual and team sports Making wise choices when making decisions about their health COURSE RATIONALE The course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competences, and safety and injury prevention. Students will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting, communication, and social skills (Ministry of Education and Training, 1999). The Health and Physical Education department curriculum has been designed to provide learning experiences that will help students realize their potential in life. Students will develop: An understanding of the importance of physical fitness, health and well being and the factors that contribute to them A personal commitment to daily vigorous activity and positive health behaviours The skills and knowledge they require to participate in physical activities throughout their lives These expectations concentrate on the development of personal fitness, competence, skills, attitudes, and knowledge that will help students deal with the variety of personal, social, and work place demands in their lives. The primary focus of this course is to help students develop a commitment to a positive attitude in life long healthy active living in the capacity to live satisfying productive lives. The expectations for the course describe the knowledge and skills that the students are expected to develop and demonstrate in their class work, tests and various other activities where their achievement is assessed and evaluated. 1 Units of Focus Interactive Games and Physical Fitness Nutrition Conflict resolution and Anger Management Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Growth and Sexuality, Substance Use and Abuse Outdoor Education Individual and Team Activities STUDENT EXPECTATIONS UNIFORM The Physical Education uniform consists of: Ascension T-shirt Ascension gym shorts, or navy blue shorts Non-marking athletic running shoes Athletic socks Please note: During outdoor activity, blue sweat pants and a sweatshirt are permissible, however, you MUST be wearing your required uniform underneath. *** On dress down days, students with a valid pass may wear non-uniform colours. ATTENDANCE A large part of the mark will be based on your participation in class. You will be graded on a daily basis according to your class participation, equipment set-up, punctuality, uniform, readiness to help, eagerness to get involved, ability to follow instructions, and general cooperation. Unless an absence is school related (i.e. field trips or athletic activities), absenteeism will result in the loss of marks. If you are at school than you ARE EXPECTED to participate. If on a particular day you are not feeling well, change into your gym uniform and your teacher will modify your activity. If you have a medical note from your doctor saying you cannot participate then you will be given an assignment to do for that class. Please inform the P.H.E. Department if you have an ongoing medical or physical problem, which may restrict your participation in class. You will be given advanced notice for all written tests. YOU ARE responsible to notify your teacher of any absences. Make up tests and quizzes will be permitted ONLY with legitimate absences and will be written upon the FIRST DAY of returning. SAFETY You are responsible for your own safety as well as the safety of others. Therefore, you are required to: Use the gymnasium or the equipment only when supervised by your teacher Remove all jewellery (i.e. rings, necklaces, earrings) when in P.E. class Report any defective or broken equipment Immediately report any accidents of yourself or others Enter the equipment room or instructor’s office with permission only Practice personal hygiene (i.e. shower or sponge bath, apply deodorant) CHANGE ROOMS If you choose to bring valuables to school, store them in your own locker. Do not bring anything of value to the change room. The P.H.E. Department is NOT responsible for any lost or stolen articles. 2 NOTEBOOK Organization is another key to success!
