ROMAN CATHOLIC
Advent - A Time of Hope
Gracious and merciful God of all creation,
During this season of hope, we remember how
you sent your Son
to be a beacon of goodness and light in the
world,
Give us eyes of hope to see the good in
everything and everyone
around us.
Let all who visit share our hope that this school will remain safe, caring,
inclusive community.
May your virtue of hope guide our decisions for the service of all your
people.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son, who lived to show us your
way.
Amen

Catholic Ratepayers –
Check your Tax Bill to Ensure Proper Tax Support
If you are a Catholic ratepayer, we urge you to check your property tax bill to
ensure that your support is directed to your local Catholic school board, in our
case, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
If you are a tenant, you can verify your support by contacting our Admissions
Department at (905) 890-0708, ext. 24511, 24512, or 24519, or your local
municipal office. By ensuring that you are accurately recorded as a Catholic
school supporter, you can help deliver a powerful message to the government
about the level of support for publically-funded Catholic education in Ontario.
In order to be eligible to vote for your local Catholic school board trustee, you

Catholic Global Learning Centre North:
Interest Survey
A Board team is investigating the possibility of
opening an additional regional elementary Catholic Global Learning Centre at an existing DufferinPeel Catholic elementary school located north of
Highway 401. The new center will be modelled
after St. James Catholic Global Learning Center in
south-east Mississauga.
Like the St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre in Mississauga, the learning experience to be
offered at the proposed Catholic Global Learning
Centre North embraces a global focus. Modelled
after an internationally recognized program, the
Catholic Global Learning Centre North will teach
the Ontario Curriculum via an integrated, inquirybased approach aligned with the Ontario Catholic
School Graduate Expectations. All students attending this school will participate in this program. Once the program has been established,
the plan is to apply for formal certification as an
International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years
Program and Middle Years Program site.
Between November 22 and December 5, parents/
guardians in all Dufferin-Peel communities north
of Highway 401 will be asked to complete an online survey about their interest in having their
child/children attend such a program at a site
located north of Highway 401. Information regarding the survey will be shared through school
newsletters, on school websites, through school
offices and on the Board website. Participation in
this survey is voluntary and parents may choose
to stop completing the survey at any time. Parents will not be asked to identify themselves or
their child/children.
The information collected through the survey is
for planning purposes only and will be used to
inform recommendations about the potential site
and more details which will follow at a later date.
Board Policy 24.00 Access to Elementary
Regional Programs of Choice
The process for accessing elementary regional programs of choice must be equitable for all eligible pupils within the Board’s
jurisdiction. If applications received by the
due date exceed the available pupil places
allotted to the regional program, a lottery
process specific to the regional program
will be activated to fill available pupil places. All eligible applicants, including siblings of pupils currently registered in the
regional program, will participate in the
lottery process.

Indoor/Outdoor Shoes
We encourage all students to experience
their outdoor recess breaks in an
enjoyable and safe manner. To ensure
that students play safely and never
endanger the safety of other children
during recess times, we have some very
important rules for all children to follow in
our school yard.
School Yard Rules
No physical contact (keep your
hands & feet to yourself)
The students should have a pair
of indoor shoes to wear at
school in class and for gym.
Outdoor shoes/boots will be
kept for outdoor use only and
out of the classrooms in order
to reduce the amount of dirt and
mud brought indoors. This will
assist Mrs. Francisco and staff in
keeping the school clean. Thank
you for your co-operation.
No verbal insults (use appropriate
language)
Respect all persons
Respect all property (writing on
walls, fences, school building is
vandalism)
Play non-contact games only
Stay on school property
No food outside
Rocks, stones, and snow stay on the
ground
No taking of photographs
Please review these rules and
expectations with your children.

EXTENDED FRENCH
INFORMATION
MEETING
The days are
getting colder as
the winter season
arrives. We ask that students
dress appropriately; i.e.
coats, gloves, mitts, boots
etc. If they are dressed
warmly, they are better
prepared to participate in
outdoor activities during
recess and noon hour.
Please be advised that
students are kept indoors
at recess during the winter
ONLY when the weather
conditions are extremely
cold. (When the wind chill
equivalent temperature is
minus 25 degrees Celsius
or lower, as per school
Board policy.)

RAINY MORNINGS AND
ENTRY PROCEDURES
Staff will closely monitor the
weather conditions during the
period of 8:45am to 9:00am. If
heavy rain falls during this period, we will call the students into
the school. However, in the event of a light rain, students will
remain outside until the 8:45 bell rings. Many of our students are
supervised within the gym during inclement weather. If students
come into the school prior to 9:00, we must delay morning physical
education classes until the wet floors are addressed. On misty
mornings please ensure that your children arrive with a hat,
rainwear and/or an umbrella. Your assistance in this matter is
much appreciated.
Rosary Apostolate
Members of the Rosary
Apostolate are visiting all our
classes once a month to
recite and explain the
rosary.
They also teach
special themes that are
sanctioned by both The
Bishop and The Archdiocese. We appreciate the
dedication of these volunteers in teaching and
modeling for our students, the importance of the
rosary and religion in our catholic lives.
Students are asked to bring their own Rosaries.
The Green Committee Presents… The Green Corner!!
Trash-less Thursdays have begun! Every Thursday we encourage the students to think of the environment On November
27, a few members of the Green Team attended Eco-Fest at St. John Bosco school. While there, we learned many different
tips and strategies to bring back to try at our school. And our first campaign.... Light's Off Lunches! We are encouraging all
classes to turn their lights off during lunch time to save energy.
Energy Audits have begun and are going very well! Most classes have gotten into the practice of keeping lights and
electronics off or in sleep mode when not in use. Remembering to turn off the lights and electronics at school will manifest
into changing habits at home, and therefore having a large impact on our planet’s resources AND your energy bills!
Please check out the GREEN CORNER at our Christmas Mingle-Jingle!!!! We will have MARSMALLOWS to give to anyone who has their hot
chocolate in their own re-usable containers, and also be selling our LBP travel mugs for $6 each. We will also show you how many
plastic water bottles were collected during the month of November (a shocking amount!), have tips on how to reduce your waste during the
Christmas season, GREEN craft ideas to try at home.
Here’s a few ideas to get you started on your holiday Greening!
1. A real tree can be an environmental choice this Christmas. For every tree harvested at a tree farm, another 10 are planted to ensure a crop
every year; and one acre of Christmas trees on a farm will produce enough oxygen to support about 18 people and remove up to 13 tonnes of
airborne pollutants per year. Although Christmas trees have been a problem for landfills in the past, many municipalities now chip them for
mulching material. If your town doesn't recycle, use the branches and needles for mulch in your garden.
2. Buy a potted tree native to your region from a nursery and plant it once the holidays are over. This may require digging a hole in the yard
before the ground freezes and covering it with plywood until New Year's. Or buy a potted Norfolk Island Pine, which can survive indoors yearround and serve as your tree for many Christmases to come.
3. Switch your Christmas tree twinklers to LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights. LEDs come in the same brilliant colours as standard lights and use a
fraction of the wattage of your older ones. They'll also hold up better to the task of putting up and taking down the strings every year, saving you from
hours of searching for that one broken bulb.
4. Before heading to the store for decorations, check your backyard. Make a centerpiece out of pinecones, or hang evergreen tree boughs over
entranceways. Decorate your tree with edible decorations like popcorn strings or cranberry wreaths (thread 10 to 15 cranberries on a string and tie to
create a wreath).
5. Instead of buying new rolls of chemical-laden wrap, go with what you already have at home. Use old newspapers topped with a colourful ribbon
or bow. If your child has an artistic streak, add a personal touch to Grandma's gift by reusing their finger paintings. When wrapping gifts, go for reusable
cloth gift bags instead of the paper ones. Reuse old Christmas cards to create brand new gift tags, and keep any wrap or bows you receive to reuse next
year.

TOY DRIVE FOR PEEL REGIONAL POLICE
From December 1st to 11th, 2015, Lester B. Pearson Catholic Elementary
School will be participating in Peel Regional Police Toys for Tots. During this time we are
asking students to bring new unopened toys.
Toys will be picked up by Peel Police for distribution in our community.
We are asking our school community for their help towards those who are less fortunate
during this Christmas Season. Your help in this initiative will be greatly appreciated by many.
Thank you to Mrs. Nieznalski, Mrs. Sambartolo and the Youth Faith
Ambassadors for organizing this year’s toy drive.

Let’s Work Together to Ensure Student Safety!!!
Please be advised that cars are not to park and drivers must not
leave their cars unattended in the Kiss n’ Ride lane. We are also asking
drivers to please be aware of your speed while entering the school
grounds. The safety of our children always comes first. The Kiss n’ Ride
area becomes quite busy in the morning and afterschool. Please be
patient and courteous as you drop off or pick up your children following
the proper procedures.
Kindergarten & Grade 1 Student Pick Up
Adults picking up Kindergarten & Grade 1 students are reminded that they do NOT use the Kiss and
Ride lane; these students require an adult to pick them up at the door. As well kindergarten
students are not able to independently get in and out of the car & put on their own
seatbelts. Please park in the parking lot or the adjacent streets and walk to the appropriate
dismissal door.
The Kiss and Ride lane is located on the west side of the building by the parking lot. This lane
allows an adult to drop-off or pick up their child without getting out of the vehicle. Vehicles should
never be left unattended in the Kiss and Ride lane. The area in front of the school is a designated
fire route. There is no stopping at the front of the school at any time. This area is for buses
and emergency vehicles only.
Kiss and Ride Procedures
To ensure the safety of our students we require all parents using the program to follow the
procedures outlined below:
-Use the Kiss and Ride lane to drop off or pick up your child
-Do not use the drive-thru lane for dropping off or picking up children
-Move up the Kiss and Ride lane as far as possible to maximize the number of cars using the
program
-Do not get out of your vehicle
-Do not back up
-Students must be able to exit and enter the car independently
-Students must exit the car using the passenger side doors only
Please follow staff directions when you are asked to move up, drive away, etc.
It’s up to you to make our parking lot safe for our students!

CYBER SAFETY
The Internet has brought many
benefits, but it has also raised some
safety concerns such as the
potential for crime and predators.
To make sure children have a safe and rewarding
experience on the Web, parents must understand
the sites children are exploring and using and the
safety issues they may face.
The use of computers by children needs to be
monitored closely by parents. Children should
never have computers in bedrooms, especially if
there is a webcam attached to the computer.
The Canada Safety Council recommends that
children who use the Internet follow these rules:
ONLINE SAFETY RULES










I will not give out any personal information
online without my parents’ permission. This
includes my name, phone number, address, email, location of my school, my parents’ work
address/telephone number and credit card
numbers, and my picture. This goes for
anywhere on the Internet, including email,
chat rooms, newsgroups—even Web sites that
promise me free stuff or prizes, or on Web
pages that I make myself.
When using the Internet, I will always use a
pretend name or nickname that doesn’t reveal
whether I’m a boy or a girl.
When creating a password, I will make one up
that is hard to guess but easy for me to
remember. To avoid having it stolen, I will
never reveal it to anyone (except my parents)
- not even my best friend.
I will not respond to any message that makes
me uncomfortable. I will show an adult right
away.
I will arrange to meet a friend I have made on
the Internet ONLY if one of my parents has
been informed and will be present.
I will not send an insulting or rude message to
anyone online. This is called “flaming” and it
is not good Netiquette.
I will not disable any filtering software my
parents have put on the computer.
I will not open e-mail, files, links, pictures or
games from people that I don’t know or trust.
I will always ask an adult first.
I will not take words, pictures or sound from
someone else’s Web site without their
permission.
I will not believe everything I read on the
Internet. I will always check the source of the
information and confirm it with my teacher,
parent or librarian.
