BALL HOCKEY
HISTORY OF THE SPORT:
The roots of the game can be traced back to a game called HURLING, played in Ireland
two thousand years ago.
The word HOCKEY eventually came from the Native Indians and evolved from the sport
of lacrosse, first seen in 1572.
The Canadian version of the game started in the late 1960’s in Toronto as a summer
program at Habitant Arena.
RULES AND EQUIPMENT:
Object of the game is to get the ball in the opposing team’s net. To score a legal
goal, IT cannot be kicked in; struck with a stick above the shoulders; pushed in using
the hand; or while a player is offside.
Games are played in hockey rinks or gyms and consist of 5 players and a goalie on each
team.
The game can be played on smaller surface with fewer rules, however, official games
are played on an indoor hockey rink with full goal lines, creases, face-off circles and
centre lines.

Face-offs (players are lined up facing each other in a designated area on the floor),
are used at the start of each period of play and after goals, penalties, icing, offside, or
when the ball leaves the playing area.
Penalties are called when a player commits a foul. The offending player is then
removed from playing for a period of time, depending on the severity of the infraction
and the tam continues to play one player short until the opposing team scores or the
penalty is over.
Offside occurs when player crosses the opposing team’s blue line before the ball does.
Play is stopped and a face-off takes place in the end zone of the team that shot the ball.
Substitutions happen at any time in the game – “on the fly”.
EQUIPMENT:
All players must wear a CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved helmet,
approved hockey gloves and running shoes.
Although not mandatory, it is recommended that players wear elbow pads, athletic cup,
soft knee pads and shin guards. Standard ice hockey sticks are used to play the game.
Game is played with a semi-soft orange ball that is about the same size as a tennis ball.
