Approval of Minutes, 2/24/2015
Public Comments: ten minutes (3-minute maximum per person) are set aside to receive comments on
agenda items or items not on the agenda but within the authority (10 + 1) of the Senate. No public
comments were received on this date.
5. Reports (5-10 minutes presentation, 5 minutes Q/A)
A. Pending grants, Loyanne Flinn, Sharon Alheit
Loyanne presented information on current grants that were pending and provided website links for
further information and updates. To track current or pending grants go to the Hartnell website or
www.hartnellfoundation.org then “about us” and “public and private grants.”
B. Adjustments to funded FTES for 2014-1 5: Steve Garcia, Tracey Richardson.
Steve and Tracey provided a presentation on the budget. A workload restoration for 2011-2012 is
planned which will increase our total funded FTES. From an enrollment management perspective
we will need to add sections to meet growth funding, especially in areas that are currently robust.

C. Tenure Review Process, Chris Moss & Carol Kimbrough
Carol and Chris discussed completion of the tenure review process and complimented the faculty
under review for their innovative approaches to teaching as reflected in their portfolios and selfevaluation materials. In light of new HCFA tentative agreements, the Senate will work to align
new contract language with evaluation/assessment tools.
6. Action Items
A. Faculty Committee Appointments
1. Administrative Services Council: Pauline Braginton (PT Math) M/S/A (vote: unanimous)
2. Professional Development Committee: Hermelinda Rocha Tabera (FT, Ethnic Studies) and
Leslie Price (PT, Psychology). M/S/A (vote: unanimous)
3. Math Selection Committee: Tony Anderson, Tarek Hussain and Chris Moss. M/S/A (vote:
unanimous)
7. Discussion
A. Limits on class size: monitor and encourage faculty to not overload their classrooms beyond
contract limits. Overloading impacts data used for faculty hiring considerations.
B. Update from the faculty chair task force: a “SurveyMonkey” opinion poll has been generated and
sent to full-time and adjunct faculty to assess faculty response to possible duties of a faculty chair,
and the need to implement this system at Hartnell. Results will be shared at the next Senate
meeting.
C. Date of Accreditation Team Visit: Friday, April 10th a 4-member team will visit the campus.
D. Updates: (see announcements, below)
8. Announcements (Senators): updates on standing committee/shared governance activities
 Chris Moss - College Planning Counsel update: No Smoking Policy (AP/BP) and Articulation (AP)
passed CPC.
 Lisa Storm - The Online Education Initiative task force has selected a CMS – Canvas. This is a
“gold standard” choice. Hartnell may choose to adopt (for free!) and includes online tutoring,
proctoring and other services. Faculty need to make this decision for Hartnell. Over 700
courses were submitted for consideration in developing a state-wide system. Hartnell had 3
courses selected in ADJ and ECON.
 Jason Hough- Spring Clean-Up Week will be March 23rd to 27th of this month. Clean up offices
and classrooms!!! BOX UP and TAPE up and “PLEASE SHRED” E- 22 will have boxes and tape
available. Speech team members going to STATE?
 Sam Pacheco, Student Affairs Committee - PANTHER DAYS: Connect with local high schools and
high schools in King City and Greenfield to bring partners such as TRIO and GEAR UP to campus
for Hartnell. First meeting of history club. There was a 1000 dollar donation to start up.
 Slava Bekker - Sustainability Club is planning Earth Day events for APRIL 22nd Movie on
alternative energy. Trying to solicit some art work related to sustainability.
 Peggy Mayfield, Outcomes and Assessment Committee meeting. Reached consensus on the
SLO Action Plan for course assessments– how to implement it and what needs to happen. It is

now three questions in length. Less redundancy and more open ended wording. There is a goal
to do a core competency assessment coming up.
 Nancy Schur-Beymer – selected to travel to Chicago and participate in national exam test
construction for nurses.
 Carol Kimbrough, Curriculum Committee, Academic Affairs Council: Chancellors Office
announced in February three new degrees for transfer with TOP codes the same as our current
associate’s degree in AG Business, Chemistry and Biology. We will have 18 months to comply
with SB 440 mandates to develop AA-T or AS-T degrees in these fields. Hartnell participated in
the CTE Curriculum Academy (Lisa Storm, Carol Kimbrough, Susan Pheasant, others). The
Chancellor’s Office has developed a network of professionals (Deputy Sector Navigators)
working with persons in workforce development. Resolutions for Spring Plenary Session are
now on the State Academic Senate website (www.ASCCC.org ). New Aps and BPs will be
distributed by Lucy to constituency group committees for review and approval (next meeting
agenda item).
