Tony Anderson: Concerned that faculty have little to say about the adjunct hiring process. The union
would like to get to a place to strengthen our adjuncts, to show more respect and appreciation. support
adjunct hiring and movement. We have incredible adjuncts, but to support them, protect the academy
– that faculty can ensure the best of what we can do for our students. Union would like a joint
Union/Senate task force when looking at the 16-week calendar.
5. Discussion and information items
A. 2015-16 Student Success and Support Plan (SSSP), Mark Sanchez, Dean of Student Affairs (First
Reading) Presented the draft of SSSP 6- weeks in advance of due date! Presented ppt that
highlights many aspects of the plan. Our last plan was recognized as innovative and forward
thinking. This plan builds on those success. Discussed that the access model is understood, but we
also need to stand behind student success best practices, which includes an online orientation,
placement testing, designing an ed-plan. Many of the criteria originated with the work of a faculty
interest group. Another aspect is reaching out to local high schools, having students prepared for
college in May, that way they can prepare for college including finish financial aid applications to be
ready in Fall. Ed plan workshops are scheduled throughout the semester. Many of the workshops
are not yet filled to capacity. We also now have workshops on line for students on Probation.
B. BSI Action Plan, Jason Hough (First Reading) Presented on key feature. Obstacles: Space, Limited
participation, Triggering planned workshops, Waiting on the State (Accuplacer replacement?) Big
things have small beginnings… Retention Alert Module, early alert is working, and evolving from a
small focus group to a campus wide effort. Writing sample assessment (ENG 253) to see if some
students would benefit from the ESL equivalent. Is there a way to change the nomenclature as ESL
has a negative feel to our students. Data analysis: Overall success rates are solid, but there is a
decrease in integrated ESL, Increase in ESL reading. – Did line up with the reading lab start in 2013.
Goals: ESL enrollment should increase by 2% annually, increase success rates in ESL integrated,
New support services for basic skills, increase tutorial services for king city campus, maintain foster

The distance education committee looked at canvass due to the recommendation from the state

majority O Moss, Schur-Beymer Abstained: Watt (Discussion Technology committee meets
tomorrow, Senator Storm to call Chair of committee to ask if they would entertain a first read, or at
the very least accept the recommendation, so they can put it on their next agenda for discussion.
D. Updates from Institutional Planning & Effectiveness, Brian Lofman
We have recently gone forward to req1uest assistance from the chancellor’s office through a
community college process that is outside of accreditation – will allow an external team to come to
and help us with our Data collection and reporting. The DART project (to examine and validate the
data) continues parallel to bringing into the team. We recently got a letter from ACCJC set a letter
recently that the ACCJC expects us to report on Job placement standard or Job placement
standards – they want to hear from us about all CTE programs with 10 or more completer: What
are the job placement standards from the 2012-13 year. (Instituted set standards for student
achievement) Discussion about the illogical request to put out a standard when solid research is
not available.
Maybe we need an employment office, an alumni foundation, we need institutional support for
look after collecting these types of information. There is a new dedicated web page for current
projects. We now have a new counsel to look at institutional effectiveness. There are three
faculty positions. We are now hiring an institutional research director.
