National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovations at the Nexus of
Food, Energy and Water Systems (INFEWS) catalyze interdisciplinary
research efforts to transform scientific understanding of the FEW nexus. Goals: 1)
Advance understanding of the food-energy-water system through modeling,
including relevant cyber infrastructure; 2) Develop real-time, cyber-enabled
interfaces that improve understanding and increase decision support capability; 3)
Enable research that will lead to innovative system and technological solutions; and
4) Grow scientific workforce capable of studying and managing the FEW system,
through education and other professional development.
US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and
Agriculture (NIFA) Hispanic Serving Institutions (HIS) Education Grants
Program invest and advance agricultural research, education and extension to
solve societal challenges. For the purpose of HSI Program, the following NIFA
Priority Science Areas are considered as the national priorities: 1) Climate Variability
and Change; 2) Childhood Obesity and Prevention; 3) Food Safety; 4) Food
Security; 5) Sustainable Bioenergy; and 6) Water for Agriculture. Standard
and Collaboration applications require 3+ HSI institutions.
US Department of Education – Title III Part F HSI STEM and Articulation
– institution wide, research based student access and success. We will be
contracting for grant development and writing for this anticipated Spring 2015
competition. Quotes received in response to the RFQ are being reviewed.
US Department of Education - High School Equivalency Program (HEP) to
assists migrant farmworkers and their families attain their high school equivalency
and transition to higher education, vocational/technical training, military, or
improved employment. HEP has been at Hartnell since 2006 and has met the target
of graduating at least 70% of students every year. Deadline March 7
US Department of Education - TRIO - Talent Search - The program was
changed to add required tutorial services at high schools without additional
funding, and supplemental funding for this activity is not available.
National Science Foundation (NSF) Improving Undergraduate STEM
Education (IUSE) Integrated Math Access, Success, Transfer and Engagement
Resources (iMASTER) will transform 100 students at a critical stage of their
college education through: 1) MAP Extended Math Academy workshops for Calculus
students; 2) PaTTH Pathways in Transformative Transitions; 3) INSPIRE Integrated
Network of Sustained, Persistent and Inspiring Resources and Engagements; and
4) SHARRE Share Hartnell Achievement and Research Results in Education.
National Science Foundation (NSF) Research in Undergraduate
Institutions (RUI) The Salinas Airshower Learning And Discovery (SALAD)
project will educate, engage and equip 12 high achieving community college
students for knowledge intensive stem related opportunities, and will advance the
skill in cosmic ray detector instrumentation through hands-on research at Hartnell
College. Professor Fan has received a faculty innovation award and an American
Institute of Physics, Megger’s Project Award for components of this research.
National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math (S-STEM) The Salinas Talented And R ising STEM
Students (STAR SS) program will result in 80 fellowships of up to $10,000 per year
to students who achieve a milestone toward, or receive, an associate degree
and/or transfer to a baccalaureate degree program. 60% of funds for scholarships

research, community dialogues, performance, film, new media technologies, and
interdisciplinary approaches within Theatre and Cinema, Ethnic Studies, Sociology,
and Agriculture to create a performance and a documentary film on drought,

The California Endowment (TCE) - Salinas Valley Health Professions
Pathways Partnership (SVHPPP), previously known as the Alisal Health
Professions Workforce pathways Partnership (AHPWPP), continues the investment of
TCE with Hartnell College and the East Salinas Building Healthy Communities
initiative. The new grant is for $1.5M over two years and supports a collaborative of
key stakeholders committed to increasing and sustaining a "locally grown" and
"locally prepared" allied health workforce to supply regional demand by replacing the
pipeline to prison with a pipeline to school and career.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) - to support exploration of the bracero
movement in Monterrey County through the development of the script “One More
Day’ an original work by a local playwright centered on bracero stories. The Western
Stage will partner with local community organizations to bring the play to the
community in nontraditional settings relevant to bracero history.
Pebble Beach Foundation – NASA SEMAA Youth Program focuses on the
underserved, low income, minority Latino students from Kindergarten through 12th
grade in Monterey County, specifically students below grade eight and in the Alisal
community located in East Salinas where the SEMAA site is located.
S.T.A.R. Foundation – Professional equipment and enrichment for Choir
Programs. Hartnell College Choir and the community will benefit from professional
sound equipment, K-12 outreach transportation, and enrichment activities.

Community Foundation Monterey County – The Innovation Lab will be housed
at the Alisal Center and serve students and community members, encouraging
