HARTNELL COLLEGE MISSION STATEMENT Focusing on the needs of the Salinas Valley, Hartnell College provides educational opportunities for students to reach academic goals in an environment committed to student learning, achievement and success. 2. SSSP Plan & Presentation 2015-16 Mark Sanchez Mark gave a detailed presentation on the SSSP Plan. He displayed the plan for the council to review. It is also located in the documents section of the Student Affairs Council webpage. The SSSP plan focuses on the Colleges approach to serve incoming and enrolled students in orientation, assessment testing, academic counseling (development of a Student Educational Plan (SEP), follow up services for at-risk students. The plan also focusses on the integration of institutional research and technology in identifying and addressing the needs of students on campus. As an example of great partnerships with the community, Rancho Cielo has provided a working station for Hartnell’s students, and gained a strong support from the Judge. The tools are being provided to optimally prepare students for college. Mark informed the council of the new online orientation workshop. Dr. Sanchez gave the example of 600 students completing orientation in 2013, compared to 5,000 students in spring 2015. Dr. Sanchez sent out Panther Prep Day “Save the Date” cards to the Deans. Representatives of K-12 are Jessica Steward and Will Zibell Carol Caetano and Roxanne Becker. The plan in April 2016 is to have two sessions (one in the morning, and one at night) to accommodate the higher number of attendees. Projected attendance is 1,000. Ms. Westfall asked if there would be a session at Alisal Campus. Dr. Jalomo will take this suggestion under consideration. Educational Planning Workshops are offered six days a week, Monday through Saturday. Dr. Sanchez directed the members to the website at: http://www.hartnell.edu/counseling-workshops-and-events Dr. Sanchez asked members how to incentivize students to take workshops on Saturdays. Dr. Jalomo asked student member, Mr. Garcia, for some input. Mr. Garcia stated that some students work on weekends, but that most students wouldn’t attend because it’s not during normal school hours. He did find that free merchandise was a good incentive, but felt that students wouldn’t attend because it’s not required. Changes in Legislation: Academic Probation if GPA below 2.0. Students placed on probation can be connected with tutorials, crisis counseling, and other resources. Main goal is to keep students from “jumping through hoops.” By mandating that students attend online workshops, the hope is to provide students with all the tools to improve their academic performance. For more information, go to: http://www.hartnell.edu/academic-probation Mr. Garcia asked how students know about the importance of planning. Dr. Sanchez directed him to the guidelines on the Counseling website: http://www.hartnell.edu/prepare-your-appointment Motioned (Pacheco), Second (Garcia), unanimously approved. ACTION Jacqueline will request the PowerPoint presentation from Mark to link to the Student Affairs Council website. 2 HARTNELL COLLEGE VISION STATEMENT Hartnell College will be nationally recognized for the success of our students by developing leaders who will contribute to the social, cultural, and economic vitality of our region and the global community. Priority Group Request: SI Leaders Frank Henderson Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders assist students in successful study techniques and model for students the essential necessities needed to become a successful student. Students who attend SI sessions receive half a grade higher than students who do not take SI courses. SI leaders served 1,400 students in the Spring semester. SI students require priority registration in order to effectively arrange their schedule in order to serve a greater number of students and ensure they are available to assist during the course they are designated to assist. They are requesting Priority Level 2 which would extend to continuing SI leaders in good standing or new SI leaders who have completed the SI training. Jose Garcia supported the SI Leaders Priority Request as he found the services useful to himself and other students. The Council approved the request. INFORMATION/DISCUSSION/PRESENTATIONS 1.
