Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: `And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Matthew 2: 1- 12
Welcome back to all of our staff and students. We hope that your Christmas holidays brought peace and tranquility to you and that you were able to enjoy some time with family and friends. Another year has come upon us. Let us look to Jesus as an example of how to take on the challenges of a new year. Jesus set the example by teaching right from wrong and by teaching that love for each other is paramount. Look to Him for guidance as we embark upon a new year.
Let us love one another more than we did last year.
Let us work harder to improve ourselves.
Let us bring Jesus’ spirit into the lives of others.
Let the New Year spark a renewal for the love of learning, working hard and achieving to the best of one’s ability.

God has given us the ability to choose. We are able to control how we react to what happens around us.
We may feel pressure from inside or from outside ourselves to react violently to a situation. We’ve all “lost it” at one time or another. We are never proud of those moments. As soon as they happen we make a promise that they will not happen again.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at controlling our reactions. We can get better at showing self-control.
Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that we will regret.
Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that will harm ourselves or others.
Self-control is one of the marks of a spiritually mature person.
When we all use self-control, we can be sure that our school will be a safe, caring and inclusive place to live and learn.
A person with self-control …
• is patient
• knows how to wait his/her turn
• can calm himself/herself down and think before reacting to situations
• knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing, fighting, etc.)
• works to include others
• can think things through and do what is best for everyone
Let us pray this month, for the grace and courage to be people of self-control – people who will resist the temptation to cause harm to ourselves or to others around us.
We want to thank you for supporting our efforts at home in reinforcing with our children the 10 virtues which can be found in your child’s agenda.
The Jubilee of Mercy was announced by Pope Francis as a year to be lived intensely in each local Church throughout the world, allowing every person to encounter the mercy of God. The most evident sign of this pastoral care is the chance to open a Door of Mercy in every diocese. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will allow people who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage.
After the solemn inauguration of the Holy Year – marked by the opening of the Holy Door of Saint Peter's Basilica on
December 8, 2015 – all locally-designated Churches throughout the world opened their own Doors of Mercy in communion with the Church of Rome as part of the Eucharistic celebration of the Third Sunday of Advent or Gaudete Sunday .
The Holy Father has asked that special indulgences be available for the Faithful throughout the Year of Mercy (December 8,
2015 – November 20, 2016).
For those able to make a pilgrimage to one of the Jubilee churches in Rome, that is certainly an option. Otherwise, Cardinal
Collins has designated seven churches within the Archdiocese of Toronto as Jubilee Churches, each with a Holy Door of Mercy. Going through one of these Holy Doors is a spiritual journey that shows, as the Holy Father said, "the deep desire for true conversion."
In addition to passing through a Holy Door, each pilgrim is to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receive the Holy Eucharist while reflecting on God's great gift of mercy, make a profession of faith (recite either the Apostles' or the Nicene
Creed), and pray for the Holy Father and for his intentions (an Our Father and a Hail Mary are recommended).
For those who are elderly, confined and the ill, Pope Francis said that they may obtain the indulgence by "living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial" and by receiving the Eucharist or by attending Mass and community prayer, "even through the various means of communication" (for instance, a Mass offered on television). For those in prison, they may obtain the indulgence in their prison chapels.
Indulgences may be obtained for the dead by the carrying out of these same acts by the Faithful with the intention of offering the indulgence for someone who is deceased.
And finally, for all Catholics, this jubilee indulgence may also be obtained when a member of the Faithful personally performs a spiritual or corporal work of mercy.

Dufferin-Peel’s Catholic schools are overseen by a board of 11 elected trustees. Trustees serve as system leaders of publicly funded education in their communities and province. They work collaboratively with their community to shape a vision for the board that is reflective of the input of parents, students and community members. Trustees advocate for excellence in education and act as role models to engender confidence in publically funded education. In addition, Catholic school trustees have a clearly defined role as stewards and guardians of Catholic education. Two student trustee representatives, elected by their peers, also sit with the board in a non-voting capacity. Regular meetings of the board are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Catholic Education Centre at 40 Matheson Boulevard West in Mississauga.
At the Organizational meeting of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board held Tuesday, December 1, Mario Pascucci, trustee for Mississauga Wards 1 & 3, was acclaimed chair of the 11-member board. During his 32 years as a trustee,
Mr. Pascucci has served in various leadership capacities, including five previous terms as chair of the board. He has also served as chair of the Board’s Administration and Finance Committee, Audit, and Faith and Program Committees.
Thomas Thomas, trustee for Mississauga Ward 5, was elected vice-chair. Mr. Thomas has also served in various leadership capacities during his 11 years on the board.
“I am humbled to be chosen as chair by my fellow trustees,” said Mario Pascucci. “I will do my best to represent this board and the community we serve. We have an awesome responsibility, both individually and collectively, and we look forward to continuing to spread the good news of Catholic education in Dufferin-Peel wherever we go.”
The meeting opened with the annual address to the board by Director of Education, John B. Kostoff, who recognized and thanked system partners, including employee groups, trustees and staff at all levels for their commitment and dedication to
Catholic education. Director Kostoff outlined another successful year for the board, recounting a list of achievements and accomplishments.
John Kostoff, who is retiring in January, referenced the words of Pope Francis, who declared the Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning on December 8, “Let us seek and grant forgiveness to all who come to our door.” He added, “I can only image the impact this statement and the coming year will have on our students. Let us all, whatever our role, continue our mission in the tradition of our faith, to educate, guide and support all who come through our doors.”
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of the largest school boards in Ontario with approximately 83,000 students in 149 schools located throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville. The board is also one of the largest employers in the region with approximately 11,000 employees.

What has been the history of Catholic education in the Dufferin-Peel Region?
Catholic schools were fundamental in the early development of our region. With the support of local parishes, bishops and parents, Catholic schools were formed as an expansion of a world view differing from other schools. In 1837 in Mono
Township (Dufferin County), a school was dedicated and housed at St. Cyprian Church. Later, a log church housed a local
Catholic school at St. Patrick’s in Melanchthon Township. In 1864, the first formal Catholic school was developed in Melanchthon Township. In Peel, Catholic schools were formed well before confederation as an expression of the Catholic communities developing in our region.
Catholic education views human life as an integration of body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes and actions.
The Graduate is expected to be:
1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God’s presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of gospel values
3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good.
4. A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who develops and demonstrates their Godgiven potential.
5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of all and contributes to the common good.
6. A caring family member who attends to family, school, parish, and the wider community
7. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life.
Personal Electronic Devices (PEDS) on Board Premises and/or Board Sanctioned Events for Educational Purposes:
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission (GF 066, Network User Application and Agreement). Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of
Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office.
Failur e to comply with these guidelines may r esult in a loss of PED pr ivileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices .

COLD WEATHER DRESS
In anticipation of the weather getting progressively colder, we ask that students begin preparing for outdoor play. This includes proper gloves, hats, scarves, jackets, coats and boots. Board Guidelines indicate that students will generally be outside for lunch and recess when temperatures do not fall below –20 degrees Celsius, with the wind chill. As such, appropriate clothing is essential. Please note that students should have indoor shoes during the winter months.
We also suggest sending spare clothes for younger students. Thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation.
Head Lice is a common problem which occurs at some time in most schools at least once every year. Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt or neglect. If a case is found in our schools, we shall inform parents of the students in that classroom in a letter. We have had a number of cases so we ask that you also check your own children regularly. If you find them to be infested, please notify the office.
For more information go to the following link: http://www.peelregion.ca/health/topics/headlice/ .
Please ensure that students keep a pair of running shoes or other appropriate footwear at school so that their feet remain dry and clean at all times. As well, because so many areas of our schoolyard can be quite muddy at certain times of the year, this would really help in keeping mud and dirt out of the classroom.

The Eco-Eagles recently had a REthink Drink Campaign that began on November 30 and ended December 7. The REthink
Drink Campaign was part of the “Litterless Lunches All Week Long” Challenge taking place all year long. The campaign was a great success! Not only did we meet the 1500 reusable bottle challenge, we surpassed it with a total of 1515 reusable bottles by December 7, the final campaign date. The Eco-Eagles hope the St. Alfred Community continues its efforts towards reducing its ecological footprint by bringing in reusable water bottles and reducing waste daily. “Litterless Lunches
All Week Long” will continue in the New Year, as well as Walking Wednesdays.
In the New Year, the Wellness Warriors are challenging students in grades 6 to 8 to a 10 Week Fitness Friends Challenge.
The “10 Week Challenge” will begin on January 19 and end March 30 in the school gym from 12:05-12:40 pm. This is a great opportunity for our youth to stay active during the winter months.
The Health Focus for January will be vitamin D. Since winter is long with less sunlight, North Americans are encouraged to increase their vitamin D intake. Help your child pack more sunshine in his/her lunch bag each day with foods such as: eggs, tuna and salmon, milk, yogurt, or cheese fortified with vitamin D.
Please visit the Eco-Eagles’ Wall of Fame located near the office, and the Wellness Wall located outside the gym. Check to see any updates and all the great ways we are taking care of our health and our planet.
