Catholic Easter Prayer
Lord, the resurrection of Your Son
has given us new life and renewed hope.
Help us to live as new people
in pursuit of the Christian ideal.
Grant us wisdom to know what we must
do, the will to want to do it,
the courage to undertake it,
the perseverance to continue to do it,
and the strength to complete it.

ADMINISTRATORS’ MESSAGE
We have celebrated the holiest time of year in the life of the Church-the Triduum. As
we gathered to celebrate the Paschal Mystery of the Lord, we remembered Jesus’ example of
service at the Last Supper, his agony in the garden, and his suffering and death on the cross.
We reflected on the sacrifice that Jesus made on Good Friday, and celebrated His glorious
Resurrection on Easter Sunday, rejoicing in the outpouring of Easter graces.
During the Lenten and Easter seasons, parents and teachers placed a heightened
emphasis on discussions about religion and spirituality with our children so that they came to
appreciate the beauty and mystery of our Catholic Christian faith story.
@StAlfred_dpcdsb
@DPCDSBSchool
We help our children see that Jesus’ mission was to teach the Good News, heal the
broken-hearted, and liberate the marginalized. We reflected on how Jesus’ mission led Him to
a torturous death that he willingly embraced for us. We rejoice that the Risen Christ continues
to animate this mission of love in action today!
Together in Christ,

THE VIRTUE OF THE MONTH
LOVE
During the month of April we will focus on the virtue of Love.
God wants us to give generously to others around us.
God wants us to serve and to see goodness in everyone we meet.
A loving person …
• follows the examples of holy people
• is willing to make sacrifices for the good
of others
• knows that we are all lovable
• prays for others and cares deeply about
them
God has given us many people in our lives to show us examples of
LOVE. Our families, teachers, and friends show us their love every day.
Love can be seen in the simplest acts of kindness, such as sharing a
book, playing a game, or even by saying “thank you.” We should always
show our love for others because love is about seeing the good in people,
even when they make us angry. Jesus is always with us and we should
always try to remember His most important lesson, the lesson of love.
With love, God wants us to serve and to see the goodness in everyone
we meet.
Let us now pray ... for the virtue of love so that we will never be satisfied until all are satisfied. AMEN.

Homework Help
Homework Help is a free online Math help resource for students in Grades 7-10 in Ontario.
‘Homework Help’ provides free, live one-on-one
tutoring from Ontario-certified teachers Sunday
to Thursday, from 5:30 pm—9:30 pm ET.
It is funded by the Ontario government and administered by TVOs Independent Learning Centre.
Gr. 7 & 8 teachers will be registering their students online for this Math support.
Please speak to your child’s teacher if you have
any questions regarding this support.
CLASS LISTS
Over the next few months we will be making up the class lists for next year. This is quite a complex process and is done in consultation with this year’s teachers, support staff and administration.
As part of this process, parents may also give their input around class placement for their child
(ren). Input must be stated in writing, provide an educational reason for the request, and be submitted to the principal by April 29, 2016. Please do not confuse this with a request for individual
teachers, or an opportunity for your child to ask for the teacher s/he wants. We recognize that there
may be things about your child’s learning or past experience that we may not know about that may
affect your child’s learning. We invite you to help us find the most appropriate placement for your
child(ren), by sharing this information. We cannot guarantee that requests will be fulfilled, but all
will be considered.
Our Shared Beliefs: ENHANCING TRANSITIONAL PRACTICES
We believe that we are called to support all throughout our journey of life-long learning through growth, transformation, and witness; revealing “the hope that is within us”(1 Peter 3:15).
THE ONTARIO CATHOLIC SCHOOL GRADUATE EXPECTATIONS
Catholic education views human life as an integration of body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in
this vision, Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and
academic quest. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only
in terms of knowledge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes and actions.
Vision of the Learner
The Graduate is expected to be:
1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates the
signs and sacred mystery of God’s presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness,
reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively,
responding critically in light of gospel values
3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good.
4. A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who develops and demonstrates their
God-given potential.
5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work which
respects the rights of all and contributes to the common good.
6. A caring family member who attends to family, school, parish, and the wider community
7. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting
peace, justice and the sacredness of human life.

STORAGE/ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION
Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually. If your child requires medication,
please have all pertinent forms completed and returned with the medication to the office as soon as possible.
CONCUSSIONS
Concussions are brain injuries caused by excessive, rapid movement of the brain inside the skull. This movement causes
damage that changes how brain cells function, leading to symptoms that can be physical (headaches, dizziness), cognitive
(problems remembering or concentrating), or emotional (feeling depressed). A concussion can result from a blow to the head
or body in any number of activities including receiving a check in hockey, falling from a jungle gym, or slipping on an icy
sidewalk. All head injuries can be difficult to diagnose, however, a concussion is the most difficult head injury to diagnose.
Brain scans cannot determine if a concussion exists. The school calls parents whenever a child has hit their head. It is important that parents also keep the school informed if their child has had a head injury during an extracurricular activity. The
school will work with the family to set up a plan (in line with the Board’s protocol) to assist the student in returning to normal physical activity.
NO CHILD WITHOUT MEDIC ALERT PROGRAM
The No Child Without program offers a free MedicAlert membership to students who attend our school and are between the
ages of 4 to 14. If your child has a medical condition, allergy, or is required to take medication on a regular basis, then you
should consider a MedicAlert membership through this program. For further information pick up a brochure at the school
office, or visit www.nochildwithout.ca. If your child is already part of the program but his/her medical condition or contact
information has changed, call 1-877-282-5378.
SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS - Annual Criminal Declaration / Criminal Reference Check
A valid Criminal Background Check must be provided by all new volunteers. Once a CBC is provided to the school, an Annual Offence Declaration can be completed in subsequent years. The volunteer CBC/AODs must be housed in a secure location in the school. Forms are available from the main office.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN
In the unforeseen event that we should have an emergency at our school, we will evacuate to:
St Sofia Catholic Elementary School
3540 Havenwood Dr.
(905) 625.0823
Safety regulations and Board Policy require us to have this contingency plan in place. In the event of an evacuation to our
alternate site, your child will remain at St. Sofia School until we are able to contact you and make arrangements for pick up.
ShareLife
On Monday, March 7, 2016 Mr. Arthur Peters, the Director of ShareLife, visited our school. We shared with
him all of the great things that we are doing to help ShareLife in our school. Each student and staff member received a ShareLife Bracelet to celebrate ShareLife Week. The staff and students presented a cheque of $1567 to
ShareLife.
ShareLife has a long tradition of assisting the vulnerable and marginalized in our community dating back to the
1840’s when our first Archbishop of Toronto, Michael Power, personally worked with immigrants who were
dying of typhus. Today we continue this tradition by extending an invitation to all Catholics to take part in continuing to care for the vulnerable among us. ShareLife supports a number of Catholic organizations within the
community and Archdiocese of Toronto. Student and staff involvement in school-based activities has already
raised some funds this year.
Thank you for giving generously.

School Lockdown Drill
It is a policy in Dufferin Peel CDSB that all of its schools conduct a “Lockdown Procedure”
twice a year. This will be initiated should an emergency exist on school property or in the surrounding neighborhood. Part of the process is to practice the “Lockdown Procedures” as we
practice our Fire Drills.
During the first week of April we will be conducting our Lockdown Drills with our staff and
students. The procedures that we will follow have been recommended by the Board.
Students will be instructed that when they hear the announcements “Initiate Lockdown Procedure” followed by the repeated ringing of the bell, all staff and students will follow the following actions:
1. All students and staff inside the building will remain in their classrooms.
2. Students or staff in the hallways or washrooms will be expected to go to the closest classroom.
3. Students and staff will remain in the classroom until further instructions are given.
4. All students and staff who are outside the building are to quickly move as far away from
the building as possible and remain there until further instructions are provided.
We will be conducting our Lockdown Drill on Monday, April 4 at 1:30pm and Thursday,
April 7 at 1pm. The drill will be conducted with as much sensitivity as possible in order
not to cause undue concern with students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do
not hesitate to contact the school. Please assist us with this drill by reviewing the Lock Down
Procedures with your child(ren).
