COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 2015
In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row,
that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing,
fly scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep,
though poppies grow in Flanders Fields.
Principal’s Message
Let There Be Peace on Earth & Let It Begin With Me!
October has gone by so quickly with students involved in their learning and many activities. As we move on to November we reflect
on the passing of the many souls from this life into God’s heavenly kingdom. Beginning with All Souls’ Day, we dedicate a month
of prayer to those loved ones who have gone before us. We also remember, in a special way, those unknown courageous souls who
have lost their lives in the great battles of this century for our freedom so that we may live in peaceful times. In saying “never
again”, we must “never forget” either. Let us thank God for the freedom that we enjoy each day. Let us also pray to God to bring
us peace in our hearts, families, school, community, city, country and to this world that we may all live in harmony with each other.
During the month of November, we will also take the time to remember all the saints, especially our patron saint St. Aidan, and
pray that all of us will strive to live in a saintly manner.
Let us gives thanks to . . .

Mr. Resendes for being with us for the first few months of this school year. We wish him all the very best in his new
teaching assignment.

Welcome back Mrs. Kong to St. Aidan after her leave from school.

All of our Students/Families who generously donated non-perishable items for our Thanksgiving Food Drive. Thank you
to Mrs. Sousa and the Youth Faith Ambassadors who organized the food drive on behalf of the
school.
.

Ms. Evans & Mrs. Litster and their classes for hosting the virtue assembly last month on empathy.
1
Virtue of the Month
During the month of November we will focus on the virtue of
CONSCIENCE. Conscience means God helps us to choose to
be good people. Conscience helps us to live together in a
safe, caring and inclusive community by knowing how to
recognize and create a safe, peaceful place based on
conscience.
A person with conscience . . .
 Chooses to do the ‘right thing’
and feels good about it;
 Can see how his/her actions may hurt others;
 Admits his/her wrong-doing and feels badly;
 Says ‘sorry’ and tries to make up for mistakes;
 Keeps promises.
This month we pray for the grace and strength to be people
of conscience - people who know the good and decent way to
act and then act that way.
Throughout the month of the October we celebrated the
virtue of empathy and students were selected from each
class to represent the Student of the Month as they
demonstrated that they were people of empathy. We are
proud of these students and all of students in the school who
continue to grow as disciples of God.

Operation Christmas Child – Exciting
Boxes due back November 12th
St. Aidan has taken on the initiative Operation Christmas
Child. It is a fun and simple project of the Samaritan’s Purse
that brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations
worldwide through gift-filled shoeboxes. We hope that
many underprivileged children will have a gift to open and a
smile on their face on Christmas Day through your
generosity. Each family will receive a box, and we hope you
will support this worthwhile project. As a family, you will
choose to provide a gift to a girl or boy, the age category
you choose, and then fill the box with small items (school
supplies, hygiene items, small toys). The project will need to
be completed by November 12, 2015 in order for the gifts
to be delivered in time for Christmas to these needy children
in orphanages and war-torn countries in over 130 counties
worldwide. The youngest or only child in the family has
already brought home a box and further information. Thank
you for your support.
Hard Candy Drive
During the week of November 2-6, we are holding a hard
candy drive after Halloween with the proceeds going to Dr.
Simone’s outreach programme to help those in developing
countries. Malnourishment and starvation are a continuing
problem facing those living in third world countries, and, in
particular, children are greatly affected. Hard candy is sent
to hospitals and medical centres in developing countries to
be used for medical purposes. When children are starving
they lose the desire to eat and their saliva glands dry up.
The hard candy is used to get the saliva glands working and
the sugar content gives the body the desire to eat again. In
addition, missionaries like to have some candy on hand for
special occasions for poor children all over the world.
We are asking for donations of hard candy (suckers,
lollipops, mints, etc.) beginning November 2 to 6. Students
are asked to bring their donations to class where they will
be collected and sent to Dr. Simone.

SAFETY/SECURITY COMES FIRST
Wowbutter
The Board continues to maintain the position that schools
should discourage the sending of peanut butter substitutes
to school where students have peanut allergies is for the
following reasons:
1)
If a child with a life-threatening peanut allergy sees
it, they may experience anxiety and/or physical
panic reaction as a result of visually seeing the
WOWBUTTER, or at minimum, the child and his or
her family members may have safety concerns about
the product being in school;
2)
It can create significant challenges for teachers,
and especially students, to identify real peanut
butter from the substitute;
3)
If one student sees another with WOWBUTTER,
they may believe it is peanut butter, and may take
the message home that it is acceptable to bring
peanut butter, and may bring their own peanut
butter to school as a result; and,
Front Door Access Protocol
We strive to make sure that our school is a safe, caring,
healthy, and inclusive place in which to learn and to work.
Safety and security protocols and practices are important
components of our commitment to maintain a safe and secure
school environment.
We continue to have the front door (in addition to all doors
in the school) locked at all times. There is a buzzer system
which allows the office to determine who is at the door by
observing a video monitor after a buzzer activates a two-way
speaker and camera system. Only school staff are allowed to
admit visitors into the school via the buzzer from the main
office. Students and parents in the front foyer are not
permitted to open the door to visitors (even if they know
you) who are waiting outside.
Access during lunch time may be delayed depending on the
availability of staff who are required to monitor the new
system.
The co-operation and understanding of parents/guardians
are important factor in the success of this protocol. In this
regard, everyone is encouraged to:
 Arrive at school on time to allow children to enter
with their classmates to avoid front entry lates.
 Send lunch with your child in the morning to limit
traffic in through the front door at lunch time or
during the morning.
 We respectfully request that you limit your visits to
the school during the daytime as much as possible in
order to protect the instructional time and reduce
interruptions.
4)
The presence of this look-alike can create potential
circumstances of bullying / threats toward students
with life-threatening peanut allergies.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation to this
important matter.
ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION
CALL 950-840-3042
You can leave a message anytime to inform
the school of absences and lates.
If a pattern of absences and lates
becomes apparent,
parents will be contacted by the school.
Driveway/Kiss N’ Ride Safety
Thank you to all the parents who use the driveway safely and
respect the procedures and directions of the supervisors. It
is extremely important that parents drive slowly and

and effective way of allowing children to enter the school
property providing that it is used properly.

Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu
Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in
ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school
communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and
cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing
basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our
board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as
reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with
students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our
regional health units.
A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be
contracted in public places throughout the year. For
example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are
transferred from person to person through hand
contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December
through February, but can start as early as October.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures,
as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the
various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG)
resources available to you through their websites. As always,
children who are unwell, should be kept at home.
Flu Clinics

Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?
Selling poppies in town today.
The poppies, child, are flowers of love.
For the men who marched away.
But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?
Why not a beautiful rose?
Because my child, men fought and died
In the fields where the poppies grow.
But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood, my child.
The blood that our soldiers shed.
The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.
Why does it have to be black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.
For the men who never came back.
But why, Mummy are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain.
My tears are my fears for you my child.
For the world is forgetting again
