Principal’s Message
During the month of March, we continue our devotion of prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving in this Holy season of Lent in preparation for Easter. Our Ash
Wednesday liturgy marked the beginning of Lent, a time when we are asked to turn away
from sin and be faithful to the Gospel teachings. Coming to know our God more intimately
through our relationship with Jesus and the people around us is the work of our lives.
Students are encouraged to renew their baptismal promises and their relationship with Jesus through acts of piety. Students will spend time in daily prayer and reflection, in giving
up something that distracts them from knowing God, and by giving alms, which can mean
time, money, or possessions to help people in need. God only wants us to change the
things we do if it will make our hearts, souls and minds overflow with love for him and for our
neighbours.
As always, thank you to everyone for your continued
support. St. Edith Stein is a special school because
of the many gifts that you and your children bring
to it. We value your role as parents, and we look
forward to continuing to work with you.
Mrs. Boulanger

Virtue of the Month
This month we will celebrate the virtue of ‘kindness’. God has given us the gifts of friends
and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way. Every person in our
lives carries the Spirit of God; so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ.
Kindness can only be seen through actions. It’s not enough to say, “I will be kind or I am
kind”. We must show that we are kind by our words and our actions.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at showing kindness to everyone we
meet.
A kind person…
Says nice things about others so they feel good about themselves
Sticks up for people who are picked on or need help
Refuses to join others who are insulting, intimidating, mean or
hurtful
Watches and looks for ways to help those in need.
Parking Lot Safety Issues
To ensure the safety of our students,
we would ask that parents observe the
following:

Parents are asked not to park
along the chain at the parking lot
entrance between 8:45 -9:00 a.m.
& from 3:25—3:40pm.

Parents are asked to drop their children off at the
front of the school in the Kiss N’ Ride lane wher e
staff will help students exit vehicles.

Please ensure that students ALWAY S exit their cars
from the passenger side. Not doing so is extremely
dangerous.

Whenever possible, do not pack backpacks in the
trunk. The retrieval process can be unsafe.
Thank you for your co-operation in this matter and reviewing these safety rules with your children!
Collecting Games for Indoor Recess
We are collecting gently used games for classrooms
to be used on inclement weather recesses. Such
games include: chess, checkers, Trouble, cards and
Connect 4. If you have any of these with all the pieces you can bring it into the school for redistribution to
the classrooms. Your donation is greatly appreciated!
LIGHTS OFF FOR EARTH HOUR
Millions of people around the world switch off their lights
for Earth Hour at 8:30pm on the last Saturday of March
each year.
Saturday, March 19, 2016
Make Earth Hour an event to share with your friends and
family!
Punctuality
School begins at 9:00 a.m. Students
should arrive at the back of the school
by 9:00 a.m. in order to line up with
their class. For those parents who drop
off their children in the Kiss N’ Ride
lane, this will necessitate arriving at
least a few minutes before the 9:00
a.m. bell. Students arriving late will
have to sign in at the office. Those
who are often late will be tracked at
the office. Tardiness is disruptive to classroom procedures.
These ‘lates’ are recorded on their attendance record.
Punctuality is a student expectation for all students.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS EQUALLY AS DISRUPTIVE TO
HAVE STUDENTS CALLED DOWN FROM CLASSES BEFORE 3:30pm. WE REALIZE THAT ON OCCASION IT IS
NECESSARY TO RETRIEVE YOUR CHILDREN BEFORE
THE BELL, HOWEVER, THIS SHOULD NOT CONTINUE ON
A REUGULAR BASIS.
DISMISSAL IS AT 3:30PM.
SHROVE TUESDAY
On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, the Hospitality
students from St. Joan of Arc Secondary School
prepared a nutritious pancake breakfast for our
staff and students. Students enjoyed pancakes,
syrup and juice in the gymnasium. What a wonderful way to prepare for the fasting season of
Lent! We would like to thank the students who
prepared this wonderful meal for us. Thank you
for your donations of $2.00 which helped to offset
the costs.
ECO NEWS
Look out Stein, the ENERGY HOG
is back……
Starting March 1st, all staff and students will be
asked to ensure that lights are off in all classrooms when not in use. If the ECO team notices
an empty classroom with the lights on…..the Energy Hog will be waiting for the students upon their
return to class.
The Eco Team will be tracking all offenders.
BEWARE….YOU NEVER KNOW WHO IS ECOWATCHING!
Flex Boundary Admissions
Current flex boundary admissions are not guaranteed. Flex
boundary admissions must be requested in writing to the school
principal each year. If your child currently attends St. Edith
Stein on flexible boundaries, please submit your requests for

EQAO Update
The grade 3 and 6 EQAO assessments measure how well students have met the expectations in the Ontario Curriculum
Grades 1-8. The assessments test what students know and
how well they apply their knowledge and skills in reading, writing and mathematics by requiring students to read and respond
to passages, to write and to solve mathematical problems. The
results are reported in terms of achievement from levels 1-4
with level 3 as the standard.
The window for EQAO assessments of all grade 3 and 6 students of 2015-16 has been established for May 25 –June 8.
2016. Please keep this important time frame in mind when you
are planning family trips or appointments. It is important that all
grade 3 and 6 students be in attendance for the assessments.
For further details on our school results, improvement plans or
student on the provincial assessments visit the Board website

Our Catholic School Heritage
8. What effect did the Canadian Constitution, create in the
British North America Act (1867) (now entitled either the
Constitution Act or the Canada Act), have on separate
schools?
When the Fathers of Confederation came from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Canada East, and Canada West to meet in
Charlottetown and Quebec, they quickly concluded, in the
words of one of the Fathers, Sir Charles Tupper, that “Without
this guarantee for the rights of minorities being embodied in
that new constitution, we should have been unable to obtain
any Confederation whatever.”
9. What guarantee for separate schools does the Canadian
Constitution still contain?
In 1867 the Fathers of Confederation made section 93(1) part
of the Constitution. It states:
Nothing in any such [provincial legislative] Law shall prejudicially affect any Right or Privilege with respect to Denominational Schools which any Class of Persons [i.e. separate
school supporters] have by Law in the Province at the Union.
CHESS
On February 23, 2016, the members of the school's

Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary
School.
The school tournament is sure to be an
exciting event for all participants!

can be dropped off at the nearest Police Station. Criminal Reference Checks for volunteers are free of charge.
Primary and Junior Intramurals
The students in grades 4,5,and 6 have been enjoying weekly

incomplete. It will tell you what vaccinations your child needs to meet the requirements for Ontario.
If you receive a letter, please be sure your child has received the required vaccination, then give the date(s) to
Peel Public Health immediately to update your child’s record.
For more information please call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 or visit www.immunizepeel.ca.

A Lenten Prayer
Good and Gracious God,
You call your people back to you this Lent.
May this sacred season renew our desire to live
fully the promises of our baptism and to love you
with a whole heart.
Through more frequent prayer, acts of charity,
and fasting, may we remember that loving you
and one another is the most important thing we
can do.
In confidence, we ask these things through Jesus
Christ our Risen Lord and Saviour.
Amen
