PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Advent is the time before Christmas when we
prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus.
We wait in joyful hope for the Nativity of Jesus,
our Lord. The staff and students of Holy Spirit
School will enter into the spirit of the season
by preparing to help those in the community who require
our assistance. As a school community we have many
special activities planned for the season of Advent; we
know that small acts of kindness can have a big impact
and can help to make a difference in the lives of others.
These special activities also help to remind us of the true
meaning of Christmas.
Our Family Advent Mass will be held at Holy Spirit
School, on Monday November 7 at 7:00 p.m. Please
note this date on your calendars. It is a wonderful way to
capture the “true meaning” of Christmas with your family.
The holidays are a time of year to be with family and
friends, a time to rejoice and give thanks for our many
blessings. On behalf of the staff of Holy Spirit Catholic
School may your family have a peaceful and joyous
Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Yours sincerely,
Ms. Poerba and A. Cassar
ADVENT PRAYER
Heavenly Father, during Advent, may we remember the greatest gift ever given: Your only Son, Jesus Christ. Fill our hearts
with joy day by day as we think of our Savior putting aside His
heavenly glory and coming among us.
As a newborn, only a stable roof sheltered Him and ordinary, impoverished parents cared for Him. Your angels
couldn’t contain themselves, but broke into the quiet night
-watch of a group of humble shepherds. The heavenly
messengers proclaimed the glorious news of the Savior
who would pay the price for our sins, the sign of Your
goodwill to all men, and Your desire for peace on earth.
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, may we grow in
understanding and wonder of His birth. By Christmas
day, may our hearts overflow with rejoicing and thanksgiving. Let our gratitude overflow to each person we meet
by demonstrating the peace and goodwill in our hearts -not just at this joyful season but all year long. Amen.
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH
In the month of December we will celebrate the virtue
of Hope. God helps us to keep on working for a more
peaceful world even when we feel discouraged. People of Hope, keep up a positive attitude, can bounce
back from tough situations, set and stick to their goals
and know that Jesus will help us.
Let us now pray...for the grace and courage to be people of Hope. People who can see, participate in and
contribute to God’s goodness emerging around us.
Amen
HELPING HANDS
During the month of December we will continue our
efforts to help those in need at Christmas time. This
year we are assisting the seniors from Leisure World
and families in our community. We continue to focus
our efforts to raise funds to provide Christmas gifts and
food vouchers for these families. All money raised is
very much appreciated. If enough funds are raised we
will also purchase a gift for seniors, parent(s) of the
child(ren). We will continue to accept your money donations.
CANDY CANES
The Grade 8’s will be selling Candy Canes during the
week November 30, They will be for sale outside
Room 204 during first recess. All proceeds will be
used towards our Helping Hands Campaign.
GIVE AND RIDE
On Wednesday December 2nd at 9:00 am
the YFAs will be greeting you at the Kiss and Ride area
for our annual Give and Ride campaign. They will be
asking for donations to help support our Helping Hands
families for Christmas.
PEEL POLICE: CRAM THE CRUISER
As is the tradition here at Holy Spirit, everyone was
invited to help with our food drive. We will collect non
perishable food during the week of December 7, On
December 18 students will have a chance to stuff Police Cruiser with food. A special thank you Constable
Gray for organizing this event for us.
GENTLY USED AND CLEAN COATS
Families are invited to bring in gently used and clean
coats for our Coat drive, These coats will be donated
to a community agency for many needy families.
Teaching for The Father Inspired by The Son Guided by The Holy Spirit
OFFICE REMINDERS
HEALTH AND SAFETY REMINDER
VISITORS TO SCHOOL
Please remember to other children, you are a stranger. When
you come to the school, please report to the office, sign in,
and take a tag. Prior to leaving, sign out and return your
visitor’s tag.
Any individuals wandering the school without appropriate identification will be asked to go to the office. Please help us monitor a
safe and welcoming environment for your children.
LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES
We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain
peanuts/nut products. We want Holy Spirit School to be a safe
environment for all students. Thank you for your assistance with
this initiative. When celebrating a special occasion, we continue to encourage that only non-edible treats be sent to school if
they are to be shared with other students.
VOLUNTEERS IN THE SCHOOL
We are pleased to welcome our volunteers for another year to
support learning in our school. We appreciate their commitment
& support and look forward to a great year! Thank you to all who
have applied for their Criminal Reference Check. We look forward to working with you.
Anyone working in our school as a new employee or volunteer
must have a Criminal Reference Check completed by Peel Police.
CRC are free of charge for volunteers. Forms will be available
from the office and at the Community Information Board. Anyone
who completed a Criminal Reference Check last year is required
to sign a Criminal Reference Declaration, annually. Please see
office staff.
WHAT IS SEASONAL INFLUENZA?
LOST AND FOUND
Seek and you shall find!
Our lost and found box is getting full. During the
weeks of December 14th, all lost and found items will
be displayed outside the library. Please feel free to come and
browse to see if you recognize any of your children’s missing
clothing items.
PLEASE DON’T BE LATE!
Recently we have noticed an increase in the number of students arriving
late for school and classes. All students from Junior Kindergarten to
Grade 8, should start school on time. This prevents interruption of classes and loss of information for the students. Please encourage and
assist your child(ren) to recognize that punctuality is a responsibility,
which all students should be developing. A reminder that school begins
at 9:15 a.m. in the morning and 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
LOCKDOWN DRILLS
It is a policy in Dufferin-Peel CDSB that all of its schools conduct a “Lockdown Procedure” twice a year. This will be initiated should an emergency exist on school property or in the
surrounding neighbourhood. Part of the process is to practice
the “Lockdown Procedures” as we practice fire drills. The
procedures that we will follow have been recommended by the board.
We have scheduled our Lock Down drills throughout the year. The drills
are conducted with as much sensitivity as possible in order not to cause
undue concern for students. If you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by Influenza Viruses. It can cause
mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to
death. Some people, such as the elderly, young
children, and people with certain health conditions
are at high risk for serious flu complications. The
best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year. The flu
is spread easily through coughing, sneezing or through touching contaminated surfaces or objects like unwashed hands, toys and eating
utensils.
REMEMBER: Health officials indicate that fresh air is beneficial,
as long as students are dressed appropriately.
BE SMART, GET A HEAD START
Head lice are always present in the community. By
checking your child’s head, once a week, for head lice,
you will catch it early and treat it before it has a chance to
spread. Should you suspect that your child(ren) has head
lice, please notify the school.
Remember, an infestation of lice is not a reflection on the cleanliness
of your child. In fact, students with appropriate hygiene habits are as
susceptible to lice as any other group. A reminder to all to refrain
from sharing hats at any time, but especially during the winter months.
The treatment for pediculosis is simple. Specially medicated shampoo
or cream rinse is available from your pharmacist. Carefully follow the
manufacturer’s directions and remove all nits from hair.
Any infected student will need to be checked at the office before reentry to class.
Peel Health (www.peelregion.ca/health/) is available to provide advice to parents, school staff and students about treatment and prevention. They can be contacted at (905) 791-7800.
.
HEALTHY EATING TIP
Your children are always watching you, even when
you think they’re not paying attention. Instead of telling them to eat more fruit produce, why not turn your
words into actions and see what happens? Keep a
bowl of fresh and washed fruits out on the table. (apples, grapes,
berries etc…) Keep it low key. Don’t comment on whether the kids
partake or not. Just keep a steady supply on the table and make sure
the kids see you eating the fruit.
OUTDOOR / WEATHER REMINDERS
SCHOOL YARD REMINDERS
We continue to remind our students regularly that they are to choose
activities that do not involve “body contact of any sort.” We are finding that most of our students are becoming more aware of the meaning of this and we encourage that you discuss this rule with your child
(ren) at home as well.
SNOW AND ICE STAYS ON THE GROUND
As the winter weather begins, students are reminded that
“Snow Stays on the Ground”. Every child in the school will
be made aware of the importance of this rule in preventing
injury to others. Please assist us by reviewing with your child
the dangers of throwing snowballs and the importance of preventing injury to other children.
INDOOR SHOES
We have already begun to experience colder and wet
weather. In order to avoid tracking mud, water and
snow into the classroom, it will be necessary for each
student to have a pair of indoor running shoes. Students will change
into this additional pair of shoes as soon as they come to their class.
We are also requesting that the shoes the students will wear indoors,
have non marking soles so that there will be no black scuff marks on
the floors. Fire regulations dictate that all students must have footwear
on at all times. We appreciate your assistance in this endeavor.
DRY FEET, DRY CLOTHING
Colder weather is upon us!
Please ensure that your child
comes to school prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. All children should have hats, scarves, gloves, warm
coats and boots. As the winter season gives way to slush and snow,
all students are reminded to bring an extra pair of shoes to wear indoors during the winter months.
In anticipation of a cold and snowy winter, we would also like to
advise parents of children to send an extra set of clothes (track
pants, sweatshirts, socks, underwear) to school during the winter. These clothes will be kept at the school to be used when the
child is wet from playing in the snow.
COLD WEATHER
Children will be kept in at recess if the wind chill equivalent
temperature is minus 20 degrees Celsius or lower. This is in
accordance with the policy of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board. We will, of course, monitor the weather situation
on a daily basis. The safety of our students is always of utmost concern. We obtain our weather information from the Environment Canada Weather Information Line and follow School Board guidelines.
With the exception of these occasions, all children will go out for recess and the lunch break.
INDOOR RECESS REQUESTS
In the colder weather we often receive requests to allow children to
remain indoors when they have a cold, flu, etc. Please note that we
cannot comply with these requests, as we have neither the facilities
nor the staff to supervise these students. If you feel your child is not
well enough to go outside, it would be best to keep your child at
home.
LATE BUSES
Due to circumstances over which we have no control at the
school, buses are often irregular in schedules. We realize
that this is an inconvenience for you when picking up your children at
the bus stop. Fortunately we now have a website where parents can
check for bus delays and cancellations. The website is www.stopr.ca.
At the school when buses are late, students remain under the supervision of the teachers or administration. Please see attached flyer for
Bus Cancellations due to bad weather.
BULLYING PREVENTION CORNER
In December the focus is on including and accepting others. The message “we all want to feel included” underscores the idea that all of us
desire the same thing and we all have some responsibility in creating
an atmosphere that is inclusive. Students will learn the meaning of
empathy and explore feelings associated with being excluded. Research shows that bullying behaviours demonstrate a lack of empathy
toward others. Students will also look at how to help someone feel
included and examine ways of strengthening their friendship building
skills.
Tips for parents:
 talk with your child(ren) about ways to build friendships with others
 reinforce the message that even if we aren’t good friends with
someone we can still be friendly, considerate and welcoming
 use teachable moments (family situations, media, and movies) to
explore empathy with your child(ren) and help them relate to and
understand how others are feeling.
PARISH CORNER
Blessings upon all of you, dear friends: parents, students, teachers,
administrators and staff. Advent has arrived, and with Advent a precious
gift from Pope Francis: the Jubilee of Mercy. How beautiful it is to realize that we are truly “loved” by God. There is nothing that will keep us
away from his Love. I wish to thank in a special way those families that
have made a commitment this year to journey with their children to the
Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. A special
thank you to families who have renewed their commitment of making the
Sunday Eucharist a part of their weekly events as a family. During this
Holy Year of Mercy, our parish will be welcoming pilgrims from all over
the Archdiocese. Along with a few other churches spread throughout
the city of Toronto and its surroundings, St. Patrick’s has been chosen
as a Jubilee Church where people will walk through its Holy Doors to
celebrate God’s Mercy and receive the gift of Indulgences. Our Holy
Doors will be officially opened on Sunday, December 13, beginning with
a procession from St. Patrick’s School at 3:30 p.m. It will be followed by
a mass added to our Sunday schedule, at 4 p.m.
Very shortly we will once again be celebrating Christmas. My prayers
will be with all of you and with the needs of your families over the
next several weeks and especially at Christmas. For those who may
not have the opportunity of knowing our mass schedule for Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day, please note note:
CHRISTMAS EVE, DECEMBER 24
4 p.m. 6 p.m. 10 p.m. (in Italian) 12 midnights.
CHRISTMAS DAY, DECEMBER 25
8:30 a.m. 10 a.m. 11:30 a.m. (in Italian) 1:00 p.m.
Normally we also have a mass at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, BUT NOT ON
CHRISTMAS DAY.
I hope and pray that all that is taking place in your homes and in the
lives of your family may truly be embraced and blessed by the loving
MERCY of our God.

December Edition 2015
It is hard to believe the year is coming to an end and holiday season is upon us.
We would like to thank everyone who came out to our inaugural Christmas Market on Saturday
November 21st. We had a great turn out of families getting into the Christmas spirit by meeting jolly
Saint Nick. We would also like to thank those who baked the yummy goodies for our bake table. A big
thank you goes out to the parent and student volunteers who helped us run the event, as well as Ms.
Poerba and Ms. Cassar for their guidance. It is hoped that next year, our market will return bigger and
better. If you have any suggestions, or you would like to help, please feel free to contact me via the
school.
Parent volunteers are an important part of our school community and thus we are grateful for the time
you give to the children.
Your Council is working hard on some upcoming events, but as always, new parents and guardians are
always welcome to help out, and our monthly meetings are always open to parents. Please join us at
our next meeting January 20, 2016 at 7:00pm.
Have a blessed Christmas, a safe and joyous New Year.
