Cassar BULLYING PREVENTION CORNER Bullying Can Be Stopped This month we look at safe strategies students can use when faced with a bullying situation. Students learn how to deal with bullying using the ‘3 R’s’ - Recognize bullying behaviour; Refuse to be bullied; Report bullying behaviour. There is no set formula that works with every bullying situation. Students need to learn a variety of strategies and the skill to determine when and how to apply them safely. Key strategies that will be addressed include: avoiding, playing with others, staying calm, ignoring, walking away, walking away with an explanation, saying ‘stop’, being assertive and telling an adult. Tips for Parents: Review strategies with your child Help your child practice speaking assertively (role play) Take time with your child to make an appropriate and safe plan for how you want them to deal with situations LENTEN REFLECTION: A Different Kind of Fasting Fast from negative thoughts about self or others . . Feast on Christ dwelling in each of us Fast from seeing differences . . . Feast on the Spirit in all life Fast from discontent . . . Feast on gratitude Fast from useless fears . . . Trust in God’s providence Fast from anger . . . Feast on patience Fast from bitterness . . . Feast on forgiveness Fast from discouragement . . . Feast on hope Fast from complaining . . . Feast on appreciation Fast from hostility . . . Feast on non-violence Fast on the need to always be right . . . Feast on compassion for others VIRTUE OF THE MONTH - KINDNESS This month we will celebrate the virtue of kindness. God has given us the gifts of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way. Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God; so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ. Kindness can only be seen through actions. It’s not enough to say, “I will be kind or I am kind”. We must show that we are kind by our words and our actions. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at showing kindness to everyone we meet. A kind person says nice things about others so they feel good about themselves, stands up for people who are picked on or need help, refuses to join others who are insulting, intimidating, mean or hurtful and watches and looks for ways to help those in need. Teaching for The Father Inspired by The Son Guided by The Holy Spirit OFFICE REMINDERS LATE STUDENTS A number of students continue to arrive late daily. Any student arriving after 9:15 a.m. is considered late and should be accompanied by an adult. Please make every effort to have your child/ren at school on time. When a child is late he/she misses valuable teaching time. Late arrivals cause disruption to the other students and also to the teacher who has already started the lessons for the day. Developing good work habits and time management skills can maximize a child’s learning potential. Let’s work together to develop these skills. SCHOOL SAFE ARRIVAL If your child will be late or absent, from school for whatever reason, we ask that you call the school to inform us. To report the absence kindly phone (905) 794-8039 and leave a message stating your child’s name, spelling the last name, your child’s grade, teacher and duration of absence. These calls are greatly appreciated and help us to streamline our safe arrival program. SAFE SCHOOL DEPARTURE Parents and family members who are picking up children at the end of the day are strongly encouraged to use the Kiss “N” Ride. If you are meeting your child(ren) you are asked to meet them outside the exit that your child(ren) use at recess times. The front foyer has a great number of students exiting at dismissal time and parents and other adults waiting to pick up children causes congestion and sometimes an unsafe situation. VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL ALL visitors to the school must report to the main office. Our first priority for all students is their safety. Board and Provincial guidelines clearly outline the procedures that all visitors must follow upon their arrival on school property, which begins with reporting to the Main Office. You will be issued a Visitor Sticker, which must be worn visibly during your stay. Please remember to always sign in and sign out. Thank you for following this mandatory safety protocol. ARE YOU MOVING? If you know your family is moving out of our Holy Spirit Catholic School boundary, we would like to know. Each year, a number of families move out of the area and reporting this change assists us in our planning for the next school year. Please inform the office at your earliest convenience. UPDATE YOUR RECORDS Parents, if your home phone number, cell number or work number and email address has changed please notify the school office. It is necessary to have current information in order for us to keep in contact with you. BE SMART, GET A HEAD START Head lice are always present in the community. Should you suspect that your child (ren) has head lice, please notify the school. THE LUNCH LADY Cold and Flu season is upon us. Students that ordered Lunch Lady may be absent from school. Fire regulations dictate that all students must have footwear on at all times. She maintained an appointment for 8 years as Assistant Professor (PT) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University where she conducted research on prevention and intervention with anxious and depressed children, provided treatment in the child, adolescent, and adult hospital programs, and trained residents and interns in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). She has worked on the CBT Unit at the former Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto (now CAMH), at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, the Mood Disorders program at the former Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, the Adolescent Program and Eating Disorders Clinic at McMaster University Medical Centre, and the Child and Family Centre at Chedoke Hospital, Hamilton. Children who are excessively stressed or anxious can underachieve in school, have low self-esteem, be angry, sad and lonely, have difficulty with schoolwork and have difficult family and peer relationships. Parents have a significant impact on how well children respond to stress and anxiety. Therefore, it is important that we, as parents, teach ourselves healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety so we can pass on this knowledge to our children. We also need to follow some fundamental parenting principles so children learn how to self-regulate when stressed and anxious. Healthy habits learned in childhood promote lifelong healthy habits and a happier and more productive life. This presentation will describe some reasons why children are more stressed and anxious than before and help parents develop resilience, reduce stress, improve their child’s overall well-being and create a happier home. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. Keynote Address 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon A Being Catholic is Cool!!
