BULLYING PREVENTION CORNER
Bullying Can Be Stopped
This month we look at safe strategies students can use
when faced with a bullying situation. Students learn how
to deal with bullying using the ‘3 R’s’ - Recognize bullying behaviour; Refuse to be bullied; Report bullying
behaviour. There is no set formula that works with every
bullying situation. Students need to learn a variety of
strategies and the skill to determine when and how to
apply them safely. Key strategies that will be addressed
include: avoiding, playing with others, staying calm, ignoring, walking away, walking away with an explanation,
saying ‘stop’, being assertive and telling an adult.
Tips for Parents:
 Review strategies with your child
 Help your child practice speaking assertively (role
play)
 Take time with your child to make an appropriate
and safe plan for how you want them to deal with
situations LENTEN REFLECTION: A Different Kind of Fasting

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH - KINDNESS
This month we will celebrate the virtue of kindness. God
has given us the gifts of friends and companions to keep
us company and to help us out along the way. Every
person in our lives carries the Spirit of God; so every
person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ.
Kindness can only be seen through actions. It’s not
enough to say, “I will be kind or I am kind”. We must
show that we are kind by our words and our actions.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at
showing kindness to everyone we meet.
A kind person says nice things about others so they feel
good about themselves, stands up for people who are
picked on or need help, refuses to join others who are
insulting, intimidating, mean or hurtful and watches and
looks for ways to help those in need.
Teaching for The Father Inspired by The Son Guided by The Holy Spirit
OFFICE REMINDERS
LATE STUDENTS
A number of students continue to arrive late daily.
Any student arriving after 9:15 a.m. is considered late
and should be accompanied by an adult. Please
make every effort to have your child/ren at school on time. When a
child is late he/she misses valuable teaching time. Late arrivals
cause disruption to the other students and also to the teacher who
has already started the lessons for the day. Developing good work
habits and time management skills can maximize a child’s learning
potential. Let’s work together to develop these skills.
SCHOOL SAFE ARRIVAL
If your child will be late or absent, from school for whatever reason, we ask that you call the school to inform us.
To report the absence kindly phone (905) 794-8039 and
leave a message stating your child’s name, spelling the last name,
your child’s grade, teacher and duration of absence. These calls
are greatly appreciated and help us to streamline our safe arrival
program. SAFE SCHOOL DEPARTURE
Parents and family members who are picking up children at the end
of the day are strongly encouraged to use the Kiss “N” Ride. If you
are meeting your child(ren) you are asked to meet them outside
the exit that your child(ren) use at recess times. The front foyer
has a great number of students exiting at dismissal time and parents and other adults waiting to pick up children causes congestion
and sometimes an unsafe situation.
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
ALL visitors to the school must report to the main office. Our first
priority for all students is their safety. Board and Provincial guidelines clearly outline the procedures that all visitors must follow upon
their arrival on school property, which begins with reporting to the
Main Office. You will be issued a Visitor Sticker, which must be
worn visibly during your stay. Please remember to always sign in
and sign out. Thank you for following this mandatory safety protocol.
ARE YOU MOVING?
If you know your family is moving out of our Holy
Spirit Catholic School boundary, we would like to know. Each year,
a number of families move out of the area and reporting this change
assists us in our planning for the next school year. Please inform
the office at your earliest convenience.
UPDATE YOUR RECORDS
Parents, if your home phone number, cell number or work number
and email address has changed please notify the school office. It is
necessary to have current information in order for us to keep in contact with you.
MEDICAL REMINDERS
IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION MESSAGE
FROM PEEL PUBLIC HEALTH
Peel Public Health will be reviewing immunization
records of all students at our school. Peel Public
Health must have proof that your child has been fully
vaccinated (immunized) according to the Ontario immunization
schedule. If you receive a letter please ensure that your child has
received the required vaccine(s), then give the date(s) your child
received these vaccine dose(s) to Peel Public Health immediately
to update your child’s record. For more information please call
Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 or visit
www.ImmunizePeel.ca. Translation services are available.
LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES
We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire
school community by NOT sending any lunches or
snacks that contain peanuts/nut products. We want
to ensure a safe environment for all students. Thank
you for your assistance with this initiative. When
celebrating a special occasion, we continue to encourage that
only non-edible treats be sent to school if they are to be shared
with other students.
MEDICATION
A reminder that students are not allowed to bring medication to
school. This includes prescription and nonprescription medication. As per Board protocol, all
medication must be stored in the office, accompanied by appropriate paperwork and doctor signature. Please note that this includes Advil, cough
medication, puffers, etc. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. As always, we care about the safety of all
our students.
BE SMART, GET A HEAD START
Head lice are always present in the community. By
checking your child’s head once a week for head lice,
you will catch it early and treat it before it has a
chance to spread. Should you suspect that your child
(ren) has head lice, please notify the school.
THE LUNCH LADY
Cold and Flu season is upon us. Students
that ordered Lunch Lady may be absent from school. We offer
parents a same day cancellation option. Parents can contact the
Lunch Lady kitchen up to 8:00 a.m. same day to cancel their
child’s lunch and receive a credit to their account for the missed
lunch.

the policy of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board. We CARNIVAL
will, of course, monitor the weather situation on a daily basis. The On February 16, we were able to enjoy Carnival, Holy Spirit style. Students had the chance to play winter games, enjoy French entertainment
safety of our students is always of utmost concern.
WINTER PLAYGROUND RULES
We continue to promote playground safety especially
during the winter months.
The winter rules include:
 No throwing or kicking of snow or ice in any direction
 Remaining off of ice patches on the field or pavement
 Keeping off of high snow banks
 Keeping snow on the ground
 Not standing under icicles that accumulate along the roof’s
perimeter
 Staying off the field on days that it is designated unsafe for
students
DRY FEET, DRY CLOTHING
Colder weather is upon us! Please ensure that your child
comes to school prepared to participate in all activities,
including outdoor recess. All children should have hats,
scarves, gloves, warm coats and boots. As the rainy
season gives way to slush and snow, all students are reminded to
bring an extra pair of shoes to wear indoors during the winter
months. Fire regulations dictate that all students must have footwear on at all times.
In anticipation of a cold and snowy winter, we would also like to
advise parents to send an extra set of clothes (track pants, sweatshirts, socks, underwear) to school in the winter. These clothes
will be kept at the school to be used when the child is wet from
playing in the snow.

ST. PATRICK’S PARISH MESSAGE
Dear students, parents, staff, administrators, support staff and friends of
School Communities in St. Patrick’s Parish:
Blessings to all of you, your families and loved ones. Many opportunities will be offered during the month of March to help us further understand and celebrate the love of God for us all. As per every year, the
March Break will gift us the opportunity to spend time together as family,
friends, and neighbours. A time to relax and enjoy the company of people we love. Be safe in your travels. Be aware of how precious the gift
of “togetherness” truly is, as you visit family and friends.
Holy days will mark our calendar this month: March 17 – Feast of St.
Patrick; March 19 – Feast of St. Joseph; March 20 – Palm Sunday;
March 24 – Holy Thursday; March 25 Good Friday; March 27 – Easter
Sunday. In all these days, and beyond these days, we celebrate the
Jubilee of Mercy.
Our parish at St. Patrick’s, as you know, is one of the 9 churches in the
Archdiocese of Toronto, to hold the DOOR OF MERCY. Many individuals and groups are coming through the Holy Door of our parish church,
in thanksgiving to God for the gift of God’s love and grace. Perhaps as
a family you may wish to journey to our church specifically for a time of

WORKHOP SESSIONS
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Susan Williams, Psychologist
Parent’s Guide to Reducing Stress and
Increasing Resilience in Children
Dr. Williams is currently the Director of the
Halton Centre for Cognitive Therapy and
Stress Reduction in Oakville.
She
maintained an appointment for 8 years as
Assistant Professor (PT) in the
Department
of
Psychiatry
and
Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster
University where she conducted research
on prevention and intervention with
anxious and depressed children, provided
treatment in the child, adolescent, and
adult hospital programs, and trained residents and interns in
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). She has worked on the CBT
Unit at the former Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto (now
CAMH), at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s
Healthcare in Hamilton, the Mood Disorders program at the former
Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, the Adolescent Program and Eating
Disorders Clinic at McMaster University Medical Centre, and the Child
and Family Centre at Chedoke Hospital, Hamilton.
Children who are excessively stressed or anxious can underachieve
in school, have low self-esteem, be angry, sad and lonely, have
difficulty with schoolwork and have difficult family and peer
relationships. Parents have a significant impact on how well children
respond to stress and anxiety. Therefore, it is important that we, as
parents, teach ourselves healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety
so we can pass on this knowledge to our children. We also need to
follow some fundamental parenting principles so children learn how
to self-regulate when stressed and anxious. Healthy habits learned
in childhood promote lifelong healthy habits and a happier and more
productive life.
This presentation will describe some reasons why children are more
stressed and anxious than before and help parents develop
resilience, reduce stress, improve their child’s overall well-being and
create a happier home. The presentation will be followed by a
question and answer period.
