Dear Parents of Incoming Freshmen:
The Class of 2019 Elective/Athletic/Extra-Curricular Showcase for the 2015-16 school year will be held on Thursday, January 22,
2015, at 6:30 p.m. at Lake Zurich High School. More information about this event will be sent in a separate email. To help you
understand the course selection process, our timeline is presented below:
1.
The high school counselors will conduct group presentations with incoming freshmen at Middle School South on January 7th
and at Middle School North on January 8th. Course selection sheets and information on the Program of Studies will be
distributed to students. Students only need to choose elective courses. Core course placements (English, Math, Science, and
History) will be automatically determined by performance standards. The elective course selection sheets will be collected at
the middle schools on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.
2.
All core course placements (English, Math, Science, and History) will be made available on Home Access during the week
of February 9, 2015. You will receive an email notification when placements are posted. If your student chooses a World
Language as an elective course, that course will also appear on the list, for your review.
3.
The high school has an appeal process if the levels of your student’s core course placements are in question. Specific
information about the appeal process will be sent via email during the week of February 9, 2015.
4.
A final course list, including your students core and elective courses, will be available on Home Access during the week of
March 9, 2015. You will receive an email notification when courses are available to view.
5.
All incoming freshmen and parents are strongly encouraged to attend the Elective/Athletic/Extra-Curricular Showcase on
Thursday, January 22 at the high school. Department Chairs, Counselors, Coaches, and Club Sponsors will be available to
answers questions about elective courses and extra-curricular activities.
The student services department highly recommends that your student takes a study hall as part of the nine period day. All freshmen
are required to participate in the “Freshmen Achieving Maximum Excellence” (F.A.M.E.) program three days per week, for 20
minutes of the lunch period. This program will assist your student in transitioning to the high school and will develop skills in the
areas of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision making.
A student must earn 24 credits for graduation. A typical day for a freshman consists of: five required courses (Math, English,
Science, History, Physical Education) + two electives + lunch + study hall = nine periods or 3.5 credits each semester. Per Illinois
School Code, each student must be in class at least 300 minutes per day.
Please assist your student in choosing elective courses. Staffing decisions are determined from registration selections. All course
offerings are described in the Program of Studies which is available on the High School web page under Academics. Please contact
the high school student services office if we can be of any assistance to you: 847-540-4117. We look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Melissa Pikul
