The mission of Community Unit School District 95 is to inspire all
students to be passionate, continuous learners and to prepare
them with the skills to achieve their goals and flourish as responsible, caring citizens in a global community.
December Newsletter
The cold weather has arrived. Your children should be coming to school
dressed appropriately for the weather. We do go outside everyday when the
wind chill temperature is above 0º F. For younger students, please have them
practice putting on and taking off their winter gear. This practice will be of
big assistance to our staff. If you are having difficulty obtaining these items
on your own, please inform the office; and we will see if we can assist you. Once again we
will be doing our annual collections of gloves, hats, scarves and mittens well as dry and
canned food items. Our hat tree and food collection boxes will be in the lobby starting Dec.
3rd. Any donations will be greatly appreciated. I would like to wish all of you a safe and
wonderful holiday season!
Next Book Club on December 10th
Natalie Ziarnik, a children’s librarian at the Ela Library, will read from her first picture book,
Madeleine’s Light: A Story of Camille Claudel. She will lead the students in learning simple French words and creating a clay bird sculpture. Kids will also get to enjoy a French treat
to top off the experience. We hope you can join us, s’il vous plaît!
All ages welcome. $2 participation fee.
If you would like to attend and/or buy the book, please visit the Seth Paine Website for more
information.
Soles for Souls
Thank you Seth Paine students for making a difference. As you may remember one
of our first grade students decided to collect new or gently used shoes for an organization called Soles for Souls. Jillian, together with her mom, put a collection box
in our lobby and with your help collected 561 pairs of shoes. These shoes will be
sent to needy families throughout the USA as well as around the world.

November Student of the Month—Every month Lake Zurich CUSD 95 gives each building an opportunity to select a student in their building that represents our District’s mission of “Being a responsible, caring citizen in a global community.” For the month of November, Seth Paine choose 5th grade student
Suzie for her respect for fellow classmates, incredible work ethic, and her ability to support other students.
Vacations—With the holidays approaching, I want to remind our families that Seth Paine does not encourage families
to take vacations while school is in session. Though our teachers may be able to pull some work together for these students, it cannot replace the direct instruction that they receive in their school day. I encourage you to try to coordinate
your vacation schedules with our district’s schedule to limit the crucial instruction that could be missed if absent.
Cell Phone use in School Zone—It is state law that motorists are not allowed to be utilizing your phones while driving in a school zone or parking lot. Please remember and respect these laws as they are in place for our student’s safety.

A Note from our Social Worker
Whether it’s attention, intervention or prevention, everyone must be involved in keeping our
kids safe from bullying.
The State of Illinois, Lake Zurich School District 95 and Seth Paine School all have no-bullying policies. We provide
assemblies, programs and classroom discussions because we believe all kids have the right to feel safe and comfortable
here at school. Still, bullying is a complicated problem which often goes unreported. Parents, principals and all staff
need to continue to work together, to pay attention to what the students are telling us, to intervene in any bullying situation, and to present ongoing prevention activities. Following are some tips for parents:
Starting at Home
Have the adults in the home agree on modeling respectful behavior to everyone
Teach the golden rule
Teach self-control through discipline
Communicate a zero tolerance of mistreatment of others through family policies
Hold family meetings to teach empathy, sensitivity and values
Discuss bullying scenes you watch together on TV or in movies, books
Teach your child to say, “I’m sorry” when they have been unkind
Teach your child they have the right to be treated respectfully by everyone at school
If your child tells you they have been bullied
Stay calm – do not be too quick to blame anyone, do not respond until you have details
Ask them to tell you about it. Validate feelings (“So you feel left out? That must feel awful. Tell me more about
that” Do not say, “DON’T feel that way!”)
Determine whether it is a friendship issue (long time friend made a poor choice) or Bullying (intentional, hurtful, threatening, repeated, power imbalance)
Give your child some tips on how to handle uncomfortable situations (use of “body language”, good posture, voice level, eye contact, chin up, etc.)
Teach them to avoid retaliation, encourage them to talk to an adult at school
Make sure your student has friendship skills, self-confidence, self-esteem
Encourage involvement in school or extra-curricular activities
If none of the above suggestions work, and the behavior continues, contact your child’s teacher, the social worker or the
principal. If you have any questions or further information that I may help you with, please feel free to contact me.
