Hello! My name is Irene Stange and I am a member of the Middle School South
PTO. In April 2013 the MSS PTO Community Service Committee and SOAR program will combine efforts to provide Mother’s Day gifts for residents of local women’s shelters. We would like to open this project to all schools in District 95 and ask that you donate unused toiletries, cosmetic samples, cosmetic bags, perfume samples, scented candles, etc. by the middle of March. We will wrap and deliver the items to the women in April. This is an initial notification that this program will be taking place in 2013, and more information detailing collection procedures, etc. will be forthcoming. If we collect enough items, we might be able to donate to several shelters. Please contact me if you have any questions. Thank you! ( irene.stange@sbcglobal.net

Madeleine's Light - A Book Club Delight!
At our last after-school book club, students were privileged to meet with local author Nalalie Ziarnik, who read from her book Madeleine's Light: A Story of
Camille Claudel. The book imagines how a real girl named Madeleine became the inspiration for many of sculptor Camille Claudel's finest works. Like the fictional character in the book, the Seth Paine students sculpted clay birds and nests. They also learned a few French words, and enjoyed a snack of Madeleine cookies and a kid-friendly version of cafe au lait (hot chocolate)!
Approximately 50 kids of all ages attended the December event, and many of them purchased a personalized copy of the book to commemorate the event. The
PTO also purchased an autographed copy of the book to dedicate to our own school library.

The Seth Paine Second Graders have been hard at work decorating teddy bears for children at the One Step Summer Camp, a camp for children with childhood cancers. The children participated in the Teddy Bear Factory on January 25th and learned how a factory works as they completed 54 bears, 27 girl and 27 boys. The children worked with volunteers from the Ela's "55 Plus" organization as well as teachers and parent volunteers to make this possible.
On February 12th, the completed bears will be given a joyous sendoff at the
Teddy Bear Celebration. Second grade families, teachers, and the 55 Plus helpers will participate in an evening celebration to send the bears off to their new owners while celebrating the children's altruism and hard work. We are very proud of our 2nd grade class!

Popcorn anyone? The 5th graders were serving it up at
Movie Night, where ICE AGE 4 was featured
Friday, January 25th. Between ticket, hot dog, candy and water sales the 5th graders earned money to offset the cost for TAFT (an educational trip for 5th graders).
Posters made by the 5th graders surely contributed to the sale of 95 pre-purchased tickets. And of course, those morning announcements most likely contributed to another 65 students and parents who purchased tickets that evening.
We hope the 5th graders learned a bit about the entertainment/fundraising business - as they were in charge of set-up, clean-up, sales and marketing. Great job 5th graders!
Thank you to the Kochanny family for donating 70 hot dogs!! And of course we are ever grateful for our parent volunteers who kept things running safely and smoothly -
Colleen Andrews, Susan Brown, Melanie Collins, Lisa Fewkes, Deanna Hagen, Becky
Keller, Lisa Monoson, Carmel Pfeifer, Sue Richards, Beth Slaughter and Rita
Washburn.
Where would we be without the help of Mrs. Diana Christ - who graciously helps us post information on the web, guides students through the announcements and so much more...all with a cheerful smile on her face! We are so appreciative of our movie night
“director” and “staff-in-charge” for the night - Miss Black! She got to spend her
Friday night in the gym with practically the whole school! Sincerest thanks Miss
Black!
A special thanks to the TAFT chair Christine Chialdikas, who so tirelessly has devoted her time and energy to ensure every Taft fundraising event was a success. She would monitor sales from start to finish. When sales were low, she would think up ideas to increase sales. She is to be commended for her commitment and dedication to raise funds, which benefits all 5th grade parents financially. Hats off to you Christine!
