This PTO-sponsored 6-week session club has a cross country/distance running focus. There
will be 2 sessions of the club. The spring session will focus on sprints and relays.
In this session, I will be working with the kids on their form, pace, and building stamina. I
will teach them about stretching, warming up, cooling down, and hydration/nutrition. The
kids will need good sneakers for running (not necessarily running shoes), and a water bottle
for practice. We will use the paths and grassy areas behind the school and through Staples
for practice. We may also use the half-mile path behind Old Mill Grove Park, on
Meadowbrook Lane.
The kids will have an opportunity to sign up for 2 different road race events in the area.
These are 5k (3.1 mile) races. A parent must accompany your child at these races. The races
are not mandatory of course, but are a fun way for the kids to use the skills they learn in
Running Club.
The first race is Run to Read in Schaumburg on 9/25. You can sign up at
http://sd54.org/runtoread. This race benefits district 54 in providing books for their libraries
and classrooms. It is a low cost registration, which is why I selected it. Kids are only $10,
Adults the usual $30. They also have goodie bags, which is a nice bonus for the kids. The
second race is the World’s Largest Corn Maze Run in Spring Grove on 10/16. We did this last
year and the kids loved it. The cost is $30/runner. You can sign up at
www.allcommunityevents.com/cornmaze/wlcm_run_info.html. The race is entirely through a
corn maze. When you register, you need to enter times for you and your child as they
stagger runners into the maze 3 seconds apart. From last years’ experience, entering a time
of 10-minute miles, or about a 31-minute 5k works well for this. The kids will get to pass
people, and not be passed too much. I will hand out/email info about some other races as
well, but I will be at the two races mentioned above for sure.
My name is Amy Burns, I have 2 children at Sarah Adams and 1 at Middle School South. I
have coached cross country and track at St. Francis in the past, and Running Club here at
Sarah Adams last year. I’ve enjoyed running since I was in 4th grade. At grade school level,
I’ve participated in Junior Olympics and Ohio State Track and Cross Country competitions 8
times. I ran competitively in college for Marquette University. If you have any questions or

Sarah Adams Running Club program. With regard to all injuries sustained while involved in any way
with the Sarah Adams Running Club program, I understand and agree with the following terms and
conditions:
Sarah Adams Elementary School is not responsible for any expenses incurred as a result of such
injuries.
Sarah Adams Elementary School does not maintain insurance coverage for expenses, and will not
compensate anyone for such injuries.
All expenses incurred as a result of injuries sustained will be the sole responsibility of the parent or
guardian and/or their insurance carrier(s).
My consent for the above-named student to participate in the Sarah Adams Elementary School
Running Club program and related athletic activity is given with my complete knowledge and
understanding of the risk of personal injuries associated with such activity.
I hereby release and hold harmless Sarah Adams Elementary School, its coaches and staff from any
liability which may arise as a result of any such injuries.
If I cannot be contacted and an emergency exists, I authorize Sarah Adams Elementary School, its
coaches and/or staff to consent to the administration of any necessary medical treatment required for
the health and safety of my child.
