On behalf of the St. Vincent de Paul staff, I wish all of our families a peaceful and plentiful Thanksgiving. D. Brkic Principal A YEAR OF VIRTUES IN A SAFE, CARING, INCLUSIVE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SCHOOL COMMUNITY The notion of virtue is deeply rooted in Catholic Christian tradition. It is in a community of caring, committed partners that we find the space and time to become our best selves. The main thing to remember is that virtue is increased by two things: practice and prayer. By practicing the virtues, we develop habits of goodness. Practicing virtue also gets us ready to contribute to the good of all people. In a school community, virtue formation contributes to a healthy positive learning environment by fostering a climate in which all members feel safe, confident and hope-filled about themselves, their relationships and their future. By praying, we receive the grace of God to continue to concentrate on finding ways to follow Jesus’ example in all that we say and do. Each month we will focus on developing one of the ten virtues: Faith, Empathy, Conscience, Hope, Self-Control, Respect, Kindness, Love, Acceptance and Fairness. In the month of October, we celebrate the virtue of Empathy. Empathetic people are those who can put themselves in another’s shoes. They demonstrate the capacity to feel what the other person is feeling and recognize the depth of the emotions of others. Living the virtue of Empathy allows us to recognize and affirm the dignity of one another and of ourselves. God has given us the ability to form connections with each other - to live together. Empathy helps us to connect and live together in safe, caring, inclusive communities. An empathetic person believes that we all share one Spirit; that we are many parts of one body because we are all created in the image and likeness of God. An empathetic person… Listens attentively Watches people’s body language Notices and responds when someone is upset Can name her/his feelings Can see a situation from another person’s point of view Knows that different people may feel differently about the same thing As we work, live and play with one another this year, may we seek the strength of the Holy Spirit to live the virtue of Empathy each day. “A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning” THANKSGIVING MASS Our first mass of this school year will be celebrated at school on Wednesday October 14, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome! OCTOBER FOOD DRIVE It is time once again to rally as a community to support our October Food Drive. We will be collecting nonperishable food items from October 13 until October 29th. TERRY FOX RUN/WALK UPDATE Once again the students of St. Vincent de Paul School have demonstrated their stewardship and concern for the greater community by raising funds and participating in the annual Terry Fox Walk to raise money for Cancer Research. Through daily announcements, students learned about the important work Terry Fox began 35 years ago, and through videos and classroom activities they deepened their understanding of the work that still needs to be done. On Friday, September 25th, 2015 under a beautiful, sunny sky, all divisions of St. Vincent de Paul students walked for Terry. Over $500 was raised this year. We thank you all for your support of this worthy cause. Thank you Ms. Dutka for organizing the event. Terry would have been proud! BOOK FAIR Thank you to all the students and their families for visiting the Scholastic Book Fair last week and making it our most successful one yet! HALLOWEEN SAFETY As Halloween approaches, children are excited by the events of the season. Please remind your son/daughter about these important safety tips prior to “Trick-orTreating” Avoid masks to ensure clear sight Wear light colours or reflective bands to increase visibility Carry a flashlight for use on darker streets or pathways Never trick-or-treat alone; go with an adult or older sibling Stay away from cars and friendly strangers in cars Watch out for cars and look both ways before crossing streets Always have an adult check your candy before eating Respect other people’s property HALLOWEEN DANCE Our CSC is organizing a Halloween Dance for students on Friday October 30th. We want all of our students to have fun but at the same time to be safe. Please ensure that your children’s costumes are safe and appropriate. No masks are allowed. More information will follow. PUPIL ACCOMMODATION REVIEW POLICY PUBLIC CONSULTATION The Ministry of Education released the new Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline (PARG) in March 2015. This guideline sets expectations for all school boards on managing and reviewing underutilized school space, including potential school closures, and for the greater coordination and sharing of planning related information between school boards and other community partners. “A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning” The guideline requires all school boards in the province to develop or revise Pupil Accommodation Review Policies and to invite public input into the policy before it is finalized. A survey to collect feedback on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s draft amended Policy 6.51 Pupil Accommodation Review will be available for review and comment on the Board’s website at www.dpcdsb.org until 4:30 pm on Friday, October 16, 2015. Supporting documents will also be available for reference and review. Please consider reviewing and providing input on this policy. PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD PREMISES AND/OR BOARD SANCTIONED EVENTS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission. Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans. PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration. The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during schoolsanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas. Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices. SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS Supervision begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Please do not bring/send your children to school earlier than this time. Given safety concerns, it is not a good idea to leave your children outside unattended as student supervision in the yard begins at 8:45 and not before. Please make other arrangements for the care of your children prior to 8:45 a.m. Please meet your child at the back of the school at 3:30p.m. for dismissal. Students should not be leaving the building through the front door. For the safety of your child(ren), we ask that you DO NOT drop your child off at school prior to 8:45 am and arrange for pick-up PROMPTLY at 3:30 pm. ADULTS IN THE SCHOOL YARD Thank you for your cooperation, parents and caregivers for not entering the schoolyard when dropping off your children. We understand that parents/guardians/caregivers are committed to ensuring the safe arrival of children to school. However, from a safety perspective, having adults in the school yard before school inhibits the staff’s ability to monitor the yard for strangers. Supervision of students, by school staff begins at 8:45 am. Please note that no adults, other than school staff, will be permitted in the school yard from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 pm. Parents/guardians of children in Full Day Kindergarten are to escort their child to the outside door of their classroom through the kindergarten yard between 8:45 and 9:00 am. This protocol is established to better safeguard your children. LEAVING DURING THE SCHOOL DAY Parents are asked to send a note to the teacher stating the time your child is to meet you in the office area. Please be aware that no child is allowed to leave the school unattended, without a signed and dated note from the parent. LUNCH HOUR ROUTINES A reminder that students who regularly stay for lunch are NOT permitted to leave school property without a signed and dated note from parents each time they leave school “A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning” grounds. Students either go home for lunch or stay in school for lunch. Thank you for supporting this important safety routine. STUDENT ATTENDANCE As in past years, we ask that parents continue to notify/call the school in the event of a student absence or late. This greatly assists our safe arrival program. The attendance line is available 24 hours a day to report absences. Please call 905 848 5397 and leave the following information on the voicemail: Date of absence Student’s full name Grade and Teacher Reason Date of return. When a student is late to school, they must report to the office to sign-in prior to going to class. MINIMIZING DISRUPTIONS We appreciate continued parental help and support in minimizing disruptions to classes, whenever possible. If you wish to discuss something with your child’s teacher, we ask that you set up an appointment with the teacher. Approaching the teacher, before, during and/or after school makes it difficult for the teacher to focus on her/his students. This also becomes a safety issue. Please leave a message with the office and the teacher will call you back. If your child is late, please have him/her report to the office. PLEASE DO NOT ESCORT YOUR CHILD TO CLASS. Please send a note in advance, to your child’s teacher when your child needs to be picked up early, then meet them in the office and sign them out. If delivering lunches to your child at school, please write your child’s and teacher’s names on lunch bags and leave them on the lunch table in the front foyer. This would be greatly appreciated. LATE ARRIVALS All students from FDK to Grade 8, should start school on time. This prevents interruption of classes and loss of information for the students. A student is considered late if the school bell has rung and they are not in line and entering the school with their classmates. Being consistently and continuously late interrupts the classroom during lessons, creates delays in the office and sets a poor example for those who do arrive on time. Please encourage and assist your child(ren) to recognize that punctuality is a responsibility which all students should be developing. EMERGENCY INFORMATION It is important that we are able to contact you during school hours. We have on record telephone numbers for home, work and an emergency contact person. If you haven’t done so, please update the Student Verification Sheet and return it to your child’s teacher as soon as possible EMERGENCY PROCEDURES St. Vincent de Paul School is required to conduct three fire drills in the fall and three in the spring. We will also be conducting two lockdown drills throughout the year. These drills are standard practice across the Board and ensure that in the event of a real emergency our students and staff can respond quickly and appropriately. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these drills please speak to your child’s teacher or the main office. We have a detailed fire/emergency evacuation and lockdown policy. In rare circumstances, our students and staff may need to evacuate the building as a result of an emergency in the building or in the nearby community. You need to know that in case we have to evacuate the school, our evacuation site is John Cabot Secondary School. Board regulations and safety precautions require this contingency plan. Should an evacuation be necessary, you will be notified as soon as possible and your child will be held at John Cabot School until we make direct contact with a parent/guardian. A REMINDER: Students must wear shoes in the school building at all times. If the fire alarm goes off, students will not be permitted to stop to put on shoes, coats, hats etc. Their safety is our first priority. Please ensure that your child has an extra pair of shoes at school during the winter months. EXCURSIONS AND FIELD TRIPS Educational trips which extend learning opportunities in curriculum areas do take place. Teachers need to follow appropriate Board procedures. A limited number of trips “A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning” may be planned by teachers. BY LAW the school must have on file permission forms which must be signed by the parents/guardians. If on the day of the excursion your child did not return his/her form, and the parents/guardians cannot come into the school to sign the permission forms, the student will remain at the school. VERBAL TELEPHONE PERMISSION IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE. BUS SAFETY Ensuring student safety is a very important goal to all working with students. You are asked to review carefully the following rules for students while riding the school bus during school trips. Students are required to: -listen to the driver when getting on or off the bus, especially when a road must be crossed. -go directly to their seat and stay seated until they are let off the bus. -follow all instructions from the bus driver and the teacher -not eat or drink, or engage in any types of poor behaviour -not open or close windows unless the driver permits -keep all belongings inside the bus -keep arms, hands, heads etc. inside the bus -not damage the bus seats (students will be held responsible) -respect private property Every effort must be made to maintain a high standard of discipline and safety in the operation of the school busses. VOLUNTEERS Any individual who works as an employee of the Board or volunteers to assist with our programs MUST have a Criminal Reference Check (CRC) completed by the Peel Regional Police. Parents/guardians/Volunteers who would like to assist with supervision of educational excursions are also expected to have completed Criminal Background Check and Vulnerable Sector Search. For volunteers, CRC’s are free of charge. Forms are provided through the office. Volunteers who have previously submitted a valid CRC will be required to complete an Annual Offence Declaration each September. Please see the school secretary for more information. Please note that in keeping with the Safe Schools Act, volunteers will not be allowed to assist with supervision on trips/excursions unless they have the criminal reference checks done, nor will they be allowed to assist with in-school events. VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL AND SIGN-IN PROCEDURES For safety reasons we are reminding the school community that all visitors must report to the office and sign in. The sign-in book is located in the office. Please do not go into the school yard or to your child’s classroom without signing in first and receiving approval. Remember, to your child you are a parent...to the other students, you are a stranger. Students must sign in and out when they are late arriving to school in the morning or afternoon and they must have a note from parents asking the school to dismiss them early for appointments. No student is to be dismissed directly from the classroom or picked up at the classroom by parents/guardians. All must come to the office to sign in or out. CUSTODY OF CHILDREN On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult situations in which non-custodial parents/guardians arrive at school asking to visit a student or sign them out. We are best able to serve and protect our students when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights and other special circumstances. Please inform the main office of these issues as soon as possible and we will ensure your child’s teacher is aware of the arrangements. We require that a copy of all legal documentation be kept in your child’s school records. KISS & RIDE Thank you to the many parents who follow the safety guidelines for the drop off and pick up of children. These guidelines are in place to keep all children safe and our driveway is made safer when everyone cooperates. Please ensure you have pulled up to the front of the drop line to let children in or out of your car. If you need to park your vehicle for a few minutes, please use the parking lot in order to ensure everyone’s safety. The driveway gets very congested as 9:00 a.m. approaches, and many students are “A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning” arriving after the bell rings. Please be aware that it is our expectation that children arrive at school on time and prepared to work. The KISS and RIDE LANE is designed to be a quick and convenient method to drop off children at school, without the need to park or leave your vehicle. Parking in the Kiss and Ride Lane is prohibited. Illegally parked vehicles pose a danger to students and pedestrians. Also, parking in the school driveway is prohibited. If you wish to walk your child to school, please park in a designated spot or on the road. Please be advised that the City of Mississauga Parking Enforcement will intermittently be present to heighten safety awareness during peak drop off and pick up times. Thank you for your support and cooperation. ANAPHYLACTIC INFORMATION As we begin a new school year we would like to inform you that St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, is an ALLERGEN-AWARE school. There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and life-threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life-threatening reactions. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex. An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain nuts, nut oils or derivatives (e.g. peanut butter, peanuts, or peanut oil) which could potentially harm a pupil. Imitation peanut products cannot be sent to school. These products can cause undue anxiety for any child who is anaphylactic and is not able to determine the difference between an allergen and an imitation product. The presence of imitation products can create a false sense of security and increases the potential for a mistake to be made. Please do not send food for birthday or special occasions. There are many alternatives such as stickers and pencils. If you have any questions, please talk to your child’s teacher. We look forward to our co-operation in making this a safe year for all our pupils. If your child has a severe reaction to peanuts, peanut byproducts, bee/wasp stings or any other allergies or medical conditions, please let the school know as soon as possible. It is essential that the information you provide to us is accurate and up-to-date. There are various forms which need to be completed by you and your family doctor if it is necessary to store an epipen/medication at school. Although we cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, we are attempting to minimize the exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. DISTRIBUTION OF MEDICATION Please be advised that for safety reasons, no child should bring any form of medication to school without prior approval from the office. There is a Board policy on the storage and administration of medication. Where a student is required to take medication at school (i.e., Ventolin), medication forms must be completed by you and your physician prior to the storage and administration of any prescribed medication by the school. Forms are available in the main office. It is crucial that you notify the office in writing if your child has any serious health concerns. The storage and administration of an Epi-Pen requires additional forms to be completed by physicians. The forms are available from the school. Please return these completed forms with your child’s medication as soon as possible. HEAD INJURIES It is a requirement of the DPCDSB that should your child receive any type of head injury during the school day, the office staff will contact you and inform you of the injury. If the injury is minor in nature, a message will be left on your home or cell phone number; if the injury requires your immediate attention, a phone call will be made to your workplace number in order to speak to you directly. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SCHOOL IS AN ONTARIO ECOSCHOOL! Last year, St. Vincent de Paul Eco Team continued to work on a number of initiatives to make our school a greener place to work. We are certified as an Ontario EcoSchool—Silver School! More information will follow soon. “A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning” PEDICULOSIS (Head Lice) Pediculosis is a problem which occurs from time to time each year in schools. If cases are found we inform all parents of the class involved by letter. If a child is infected, we request that she/he be kept out of school until she/he has been treated with the correct medicated shampoo. Please keep us informed if this happens to your child. IMMUNIZATION Ontario Law (Immunization of School Pupils Act, 1990) requires all school age children to be immunized against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps and Rubella. The law requires Peel Health to keep up-to-date records of your child’s immunization. In the past we have had a number of students receive letters of suspension from school due to records not being updated at the Health Department. It is your responsibility to forward the information to Peel Health. Whenever you have your child immunized, inform the Health Department. Your child, before turning age 7, must have the Age 4-6 Booster for Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio. All necessary immunization records for your children must be sent to Peel Health. Peel Health will continue to offer free immunization against Hepatitis B for students in Grade 7 and HPV for girls in Gr. 8. They are given as a series of two injections over a period of six months. If you have any questions please call the Peel Health Department at 905-799-7700. Peel Health staff will be at the school on Tuesday September 29th for the first set of injections. PICTURE DAY Picture Day is Friday, October 9th, 2015. Please check your children’s backpacks for your reminder. Picture Re-take day is scheduled for Friday, November 6th, 2015. ONLINE REPORTING TOOL The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board has developed a new way to help nurture a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed to the principal and/or vice principal and will be dealt with accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the school. STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE Old Republic Insurance Group was awarded the student accident insurance contract this year. The school has distributed brochures to all students. As required by the Education Act and the Ministry of Education, the DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information about cost-effective student accident insurance coverage via student courier. Although enrolment is voluntary, the board encourages parents to take advantage of the inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if their child/children participate in sports, excursions/field trips or if parents do not have dental insurance coverage. “A Love of Christ and a Love of Learning” BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE PROGRAM PLASP currently has spaces available at St. Vincent de Paul School.
