Program 905-890-1711 (adapted) NEWSLETTER PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees You sees Him. Show us Your face and we will be saved. You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests His power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be Your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. Send Your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and Your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of You, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. + AMEN. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family enjoyed the blessings of peace, joy, and love during the Christmas season. On behalf of the staff, I would like to wish everyone a healthy and prosperous 2016 and to also sincerely thank everyone in the St. Timothy community for their kindness and generosity in contributing to our Giving Angel Tree campaign to assist families in need. The true meaning of Christmas shined brightly in our school through your giving hearts. Throughout the year, we continue to remember all those in need in our prayers. As 2016 begins, we all look forward to new challenges and opportunities with great anticipation and excitement as our students and staff will continue to work, learn, and grow in striving towards the important academic goals for the remainder of the year. As we focus on the virtue of Self-Control this month, we look to Jesus as our example in the ways we think, speak and act towards one another. We will also see the many other great facets of student life continuing with our skating and swimming programs, various sports teams including our basketball and hockey teams, our ECO and H.A.T. clubs, intramurals and preparation for the reporting period. We extend a warm welcome to new families who have recently joined us and we wish everyone great success while attending St. Timothy. We welcome back to Ms. Cosentino, DECE, in Room 102. Our school enrollment currently sits at 590. A reminder to all parents to please join us at our St. Timothy Feast Day mass on January 26th , as well as at our Catholic School Council meeting on February 3rd. All are welcome to attend. Sincerely, C. KOSTOFF Director of Education John B. Kostoff retires on January 15, 2016, after 38 years of service, in his ninth year as director of Dufferin-Peel CDSB. During his career, Mr. Kostoff received numerous awards and honours. He is a past recipient of the Ontario Library Association’s Administrator of the Year award. He was the recipient of the 2014 OCSTA Special Award, which is presented annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Catholic educational community in Ontario, as well as the OCSOA Distinguished Leadership. Also, in 2014, he was recognized by the Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education for his significant work with that group. He has published various articles related to Catholic education and leadership in education. “For nearly 40 years, John Kostoff has dedicated his skills, talents and considerable leadership abilities to Catholic education,” said Mario Pascucci, chair of the board of trustees. “The impact of his work, both locally and at the provincial level, has been significant. While we are truly sorry to see him go, we are, at the same time, happy for him, as he embarks on the next phase of his life.” “When I look at the many accomplishments of the board over my time as Director, I think I am most proud of the collective effort made by all to make Dufferin-Peel such a success for our students and community,” said John B. Kostoff. St. Timothy School Newsletter COMMUNICATION Communication (i.e. newsletter, letters, memos, notices, etc.) to parents is being sent via our school e-mail account, which is only for outgoing messages. Communication via e-mail is being sent to parents who have provided us with their e-mail addresses and have completed Canada’s AntiSpam Legislation (CASL) Consent Form. Hard (paper) copies of these communication items are available in the office, and will be sent home with students whose parents have not provided us with an e-mail address and consent form. For some important information where paper copies are necessary, communication is sent home with the youngest or only child in the school. Our efforts to reduce the amount of paper and printing are part of our ECO Schools initiatives in going green. We remind parents to please notify the office if they do not wish to received communication electronically or if their e-mail address has changed. Open communication between home and school is important and essential to the well-being and achievement of your children and our students. Although we will be reporting to you formally during the school year, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time if you have questions or concerns. A phone call on the onset of a concern usually provides resolution before it becomes a problem. On our part, if we have any concerns about your child, we will also contact you at the earliest opportunity. More specific dates, times, and information for our school will follow in the coming months. www.dpcdsb.org/TMTHY Page 6 of 12 JANUARY 2016 St. Timothy, whose name our school bears, was a co-worker of St. Paul in spreading the Gospel to the Gentile world. As he is described in Paul’s letters, Timothy was young and timid by nature. He was born in Lystra, Asia Minor. His father was Greek and his mother, Eunice, was a devout Jew who instilled in her son a warm, vibrant faith nourished in the scriptures. Paul converted Timothy to Christianity about the year 47. Paul had deep affection for the young man and encouraged him to be steadfast in his ministry. Timothy was with Paul on many of his journeys and became his close friend and companion. Tradition reports that Timothy was martyred under Emperor Nerva in AD 97. We celebrate the Feast Day of St. Timothy on January 26 each year. As a community rooted in faith, we would like to extend a warm invitation to all parents/guardians to join us in prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist during mass with Father Lando in our gym on Tuesday, January 26th at 9:30 AM. “The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but one that makes us strong, loving and wise.” (2 Timothy 1:7) WINTER REMINDERS During the winter season, the school receives a number of calls from concerned parents as to how we determine when children will or will not be allowed outside for recess. As per Dufferin‐Peel CDSB Policy, when the temperature or equivalent with the wind chill factor reaches ‐25°C, students shall be kept indoors. When the temperature is -20°C or colder, the amount of time outdoors may be reduced. Please ensure your child has indoor shoes and appropriate outdoor winter clothing. Reminder that students should stay off snow banks and ice patches, and that snow stays on the ground! The Intermediate and Junior White Team will be competing in the Dolphin Invitational Tournament at Iceland on January 11th, and the Intermediates have entered the 9th Annual All Saints Tournament which will be held at Iceland Four Rinks. OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL HERITAGE The history of Catholic schools in Ontario since 1841 is one of dedication and perseverance in the face of financial hardship and adversity. Due to the commitment of the religious teaching Orders, the bishops and priests, the teachers, parents and students, our forebears have handed to us a great gift – a fully funded public Catholic school system. The courts of Ontario and Canada have reinforced the rights of the Catholic school system with a number of judgments which affirmed the rights of separate school boards to: (a) have their guaranteed powers in the Separate School Act of 1863 improved, (b) receive equitable funding, (c) prefer Catholics when hiring elementary and secondary school teachers, (d) have their own buildings, (e) have an exclusive Catholic school community. The integration of religious truths and values with life is one of the most significant elements that distinguish the Catholic school from other schools. This is a matter of crucial importance today in view of contemporary trends and pressures to compartmentalize life and learning and to isolate the religious dimension of existence from other areas of human life. The courts have recognized, over the years that Catholic education is not a subject but rather a way to view the world that speaks to the interrelationship between faith, knowledge and action. The Catholic school is a unique setting within which this ideal can be realized in the lives Catholic children and young people. In our Catholic schools this reality can and is lived out. www.dpcdsb.org/TMTHY Page 9 7 of of12 12 JANUARY JANUARY 2016 2016 *NEW* CODING CLUB Coding Club is coming to St. Timothy This month, St. Timothy will begin its Coding Club introducing students to coding literacy and computer sciences. The event allowed our youngest students to eagerly showcase their talents by reciting a prayer and poem about the birth of our Lord, followed by “Jingle Bell Rock” performance. The fun continued as students and parents then participated in decorating and eating their very own Santa cupcake. What a celebration as all who attended experienced the excitement, joy and good cheer that is so easily found at Christmas! Thank you to our FDK educator team for their work in preparing the students. PRIMARY CHRISTMAS CONCERT This year, our Grades 1 to 3 students had the opportunity to participate in a Christmas performance during our “Gift from Above” primary Christmas Concert. The children did a marvelous job and we thank our Primary teachers, and the teachers who signed up to assist in this community event. STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS Once again, St. Timothy participated in its annual Christmas Spirit Week and candy cane sales, run by Student Council. Christmas spirit weeks are a great way to begin the holidays and make the last week of school both educational and fun. Each day, students continued to show their school spirit and support in activities like PJ day and Ugly Christmas sweater day. Candy Cane sales were also an amazing success. The Student Council thanks all staff and students for their support and spirit. ~Written and submitted by Prime Minister, Nubia M. 6 ofof12 Page 10 12 JANUARY JANUARY2016 2016 St. St. Timothy Timothy School School Newsletter Newsletter STUDENT TRANSPORTATION OF PEEL REGION (STOPR) BUS CANCELLATIONS / SCHOOL CLOSING DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER 2015 – 2016 SCHOOL YEAR During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. The curriculum has 3 strands, with the third strand of Healthy Living having 4 topics. One of the topics in Strand C, Human Development and Sexual Health, covers material of a sensitive nature. In Catholic elementary schools in the province of Ontario, this material has always been covered in our own Fully Alive program. All the expectations that deal with Human Development and Sexual Health will continue to be taught only in our Family Life program – Fully Alive. The past practice of teaching Theme 3 – Created Sexual, in the spring of the school year is to continue. Letters will be sent home prior to the teaching of the units of Fully Alive. The Institute for Catholic Education has prepared supplemental material for the Fully Alive program, designed to support the revised curriculum, including A Parent’s Guide to Understanding Family Life Education in Catholic Schools. The resources have been fully vetted by the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario, to ensure that the material can be covered in an authentic, faith-filled manner. Additional pamphlets and brochures which explain how the expectations of the revised HPE curriculum will be delivered as part of the Family Life curriculum have also been distributed through the school. You may also view all these resources online by visiting the Institute for Catholic Education (ICE) website at the following link: http://iceont.ca/resources/parent-resources/ health-physical-education-resources/ On this page, you will also find a copy of a letter that was sent home in March last year which offers some further information. It is also available on our Board website at http:// www.dpcdsb.org/cec/news/news+archives/ Parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Fully Alive program, as this is the core resource all Ontario Catholic elementary schools use for Family Life in Grades 1 to 8. www.dpcdsb.org/TMTHY Page 12 of 12 JANUARY 2016 St. Timothy School Newsletter INFORMATION FROM OUR PARISH
