PRAYER FOR ADVENT
Loving and merciful God,
as we prepare to celebrate the joy of the coming of Your Son among us,
help us to open our hearts and homes to the Light of Your holy presence
during this Advent Season.
May we discover You in all those we encounter,
especially the struggling and the needy.
May we find words of gratitude for what we have
and words of encouragement for those who despair.
May we desire the coming of Your kingdom not just at the end of time,
but as a renewal of our hearts on the most holy of nights and every day.
We ask this through Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
+ AMEN.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
This past Sunday, we celebrated the first
Sunday of Advent and the beginning of
our Church’s liturgical year, declared as
the Year of Mercy. Once again, we enter
into the season of hope and anticipation
as we prepare our homes and hearts for
the coming of Jesus. As a Catholic
educational community, we pause once
again to retell our biblical story of our
Saviour’s birth. We invite our students to
reflect on the nativity and the meaning of
it for them today.
Christmas is a time of year when
opportunities present themselves in our
community to put our Catholic virtues
into action. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank our St. Timothy
community for your continued generosity
in support of our Giving Angel Tree
initiative to assist those less fortunate in
the local community.
On December 1st, our Grade 8 students
received the Sacrament of Confirmation
and renewed their baptismal vows now
with their own youthful voices. Our
prayers are with them as they go forth to
grow and develop the gifts and fruits of
the Holy Spirit. Priests will be at our
school on Tuesday, December 8th for
Advent Confessions for our Grades 3 to 8
students. There will be a number of
opportunities for the community to
gather this month and we sincerely hope
that you can join us for one or all of the
following events: our Primary Christmas
Concert (Grades 1 to 3) on Tuesday,
December 8th, our Advent Mass on
Wednesday, December 16th, and our FDK
Craft Kitchen on Thursday, December
17th. Don’t’ forget to stop by our Library
Book Fair during the first week of
December as well. We look forward to
seeing you at the school!
On behalf of the staff, we pray that the
hope, peace, joy, and love of the Advent
weeks bring you and your family a
Christmas that is merry and a New Year
that is bright with blessings!
Sincerely, C. Serjeant

In the month of DECEMBER,
during the seasons of ADVENT and CHRISTMAS,
WE FOCUS ON THE VIRTUE OF HOPE
God helps us to keep on working for a more peaceful

SCHOOL HOURS
Please be reminded of our school’s hours of operation:
8:45 AM
9:00 AM
12:04-1:04 PM
3:30 PM
– Supervision Begins
– Entry
– Lunch
– Dismissal
We are hoping to minimize the number of lates we are
experiencing on a daily basis. Please have your child(ren) at
school 15 minutes prior to the 9:00 morning bell. During this
time, yard supervision begins. Late students must sign-in to the
office and obtain a late slip. Being on time is an essential life
skill for students to learn.
For the safety of your child(ren), we ask that you DO NOT drop your
child(ren) off at school prior to 8:45 AM and arrange for pick-up
PROMPTLY at 3:30 PM. Supervision Duty concludes at 3:45 PM.
This also applies during inclement weather days.
KISS ‘n’ RIDE / PARKING
Thank you to all our parents who have been obeying all
the parking signage on and around our school property.
We are working with City of Mississauga officials and
the Neighbourhood Policing Unit (NPU) to monitor
school pick-up and drop-off traffic flow. If you are
parking on the street, please observe all signs,
especially close to the driveway entrance, exit and the crosswalk
at Queensway and Cliff Road, and avoid blocking residential
driveways. We want to ensure that students are safe as they
walk across the street at the crosswalk.
During inclement weather, please continue to observe the Kiss
& Ride protocol. The Kiss & Ride lane and the school yard areas
are supervised beginning at 8:45 AM.
Parents/guardians should drive to the curbside lane, where your
child(ren) will exit from the passenger side and be escorted from
your car. Please do not park and/or exit your car as this backs up
traffic and blocks the lane for use by others. The Drive Through
Lane and Bus Lane at the front of the school are never open to
parents/guardians dropping off their children as this creates a
hazard for students and staff supervisors. Map and memo for
clarification of our school entry and exit routes and procedures
was previously sent home and may also be found on school
website and/or the front pages of student agendas.
Note that parking in the school lot is restricted between 8:30
and 9:00 AM to staff, support staff, and Board visitors. Parking
is extremely limited and will be moreso as the snowplows
accumulate the snow in our parking lot. Your cooperation for
the safety of all our student population is greatly appreciated.
Community members are reminded that parking on school
property overnight is not permitted. During the winter months,
snow removal equipment must be able to remove the snow.
Vehicles remaining on the property overnight or during the day,
that do not belong to staff or to parents volunteering during the
day will be ticketed and/or towed away at the owner’s expense.

REMEMBRANCE DAY
CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL (CSC)
On November 11th, our St. Timothy school community
paused to remember the brave men and women who fought
for Canada in both World Wars and for those working in
peace-keeping missions around the world. We wish to thank
the Grades 4, 5, and 6 students and staff who organized and
led a beautifully inspirational and poignant service with
prayer, reflection, and song in honour of those who have
gone before us in hopes of peace for all. Our gym was
decorated with beautiful doves of peace created by every
class, which reminded us to be peacemakers.

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS
SPIRIT WEEKS
School Spirit Weeks are opportunities to dress-up in fun
ways, to be silly and creative beyond your usual school
clothes. During this Week, students celebrate their school
spirit by participating in activities related to the school's
sports teams, wearing school colours and competing in
special contests. This year, Student Council led St. Timothy
in their annual Halloween Spirit Week. The council was in
charge of creating the activities for the week, giving out
prizes, making announcements on the P.A, and keeping the
spirit of Halloween in St. Timothy yet again for another year.
The success of the Spirit Week was absolutely amazing.
Events like PJ day, the pumpkin carving contest, trivia and
the ghost around the school made this Halloween a great
thrill!
We look forward to our CHRISTMAS SPIRIT WEEK this month!

GRADE 8 SERVICE PROJECTS
With busy lives, it's sometimes hard to find time to
volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are
enormous to you, your family, and your community.
Volunteering can help find friends, reach out to the
community, learn new skills, and even advance your learning
career in the future. This year, the Grade 8 students were
assigned a service project to help out in the community. Each
student, had to get into small groups and pick an
organization in the Mississauga community, to either collect
goods to donate or volunteer at the organization.
This teaches us the importance of giving back and how
strong we are as a community and what we can accomplish
when we set our mind to things. This year was an amazing
success and a great way to see how our community can work
together.

The December meeting concludes with a social gathering for
Council members. Communication between home and school
is greatly enhanced by parental involvement with the Catholic
School Council. Our CSC Chair, Linda Kostick, along with the
Executive Members will be working with the general Council
voting members. We thank our parent community for their
dedication to and support of the school. The CSC Executive

HEALTH ACTION TEAM (H.A.T.)
RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS (R.A.K.)
The month of November was dedicated to promoting
kindness at St. Timothy School. Members created
posters which were hung around the school, with the catch
phrase: “Kindness Is Contagious.” Staff and members of the
Health Action Team “caught” others being “R.A.K. Stars” –
doing Random Acts of Kindness. For anti-bullying week, there
was a fun but meaningful Spirit Week where everyone was
encouraged to wear various items ranging from mismatched
clothes to boots in order to accept our difference and to stomp
out bullying.
Throughout the week, R.A.K.s were also
announced on the P.A. We hope to see everyone continue to
be R.A.K. Stars! RAK on St. Timothy! Thank you to Ms.
Kontostergios, Ms. Zabukovec, and Ms. Harden for their
dedication to this healthy initiative! Special thanks to our Peel
Health Nurse, Ms. Wallace, and our parent representative, Ms.
Fung. Your participation is invaluable. Stay tuned for a
healthy eating initiative coming soon!

INCLEMENT WEATHER—BUS / SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS
Once again the prospect of inclement weather is upon us. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close
schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on radio and television stations. The greatest confusion
occurs when announcements affect transportation for certain geographic areas.
If the announcement says: “THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL
BOARD BUSES ARE CANCELLED” This means that ALL transportation services provided by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board including buses and vans have been cancelled for the entire day.
If the announcement says: “THE SCHOOL AND OFFICES OF BOTH THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL
BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ARE CLOSED.” This means that ALL Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board schools and offices are closed to all staff and students.
If the announcement says: “THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARDS BUSES AND THE PEEL DISTRICT
SCHOOL BOARD BUSES IN THE TOWN OF CALEDON AND COUNTY OF DUFFERIN ARE CANCELLED. This means that ONLY
BUS #10 and #16 are cancelled.
Notification: Information regarding bus cancellation and other emergency information announcements can be
obtained by visiting www.stopr.ca or businfo.stopr.ca
A bus cancellation and/or school closure message will also be available online at www.dpcdsb.org. Parent/student
general inquiries, please call 905 890-6000 or 1-800 668-1140.

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER
St. Timothy School Newsletter
SNOW STAYS ON THE GROUND
During the winter season, many parents
are concerned about school policy on
outdoor recess. It is generally accepted
that when the wind chill factor drops
below –25 C, students should not go
outside for recess. Dufferin-Peel CDSB
policy uses a wind chill of –20°C as the
determining temperature for modified
recesses. At St. Timothy School, as per
Board Policy, students will remain inside
when the wind chill is reported to be –20°C or lower and we
will modify the duration of lunch recesses when the
temperature reaches –18°C. Please ensure your child(ren)
is/ are dressed appropriately for the cold weather.
REMINDER: Children who are too ill to go outside are
too ill to come to school. There is no supervision for
children to remain indoors for recess.
Snow is part of our winter life
in Canada, providing both
frustration and enjoyment. We
all like to play in it; however,
snow and ice can also be very
dangerous. In fact, most
injuries
happen
during
wintertime.
For safety reasons, our school rule must
be that snow stays on the ground – no
snowball throwing, kicking snow or any
other activity with snow or ice that could
be harmful, which includes sliding on
slopes or icy patches. Please note that
the playstructures are closed during the
winter season. Thank you for taking the time to reinforce
these safety rules with your child(ren).
St. Timothy recreational skating program has been scheduled for this year. We are fortunate to have secured Carmen
Corbasson Community Centre (a.k.a. Cawthra Arena) for enough time to enable students in Grades 1 to 8 students to
skate twice in the new year.
As per Board policy, all students must adhere to the following procedures:
 All skate blades must be covered.
 C.S.A. approved helmets must be worn.
 Gloves/mittens must be worn by all skaters.
Please take the time over the holidays to check that skates and helmets fit.
This will better prepare the children for our upcoming skating program!
Permission forms and detailed information will be forwarded to you in the New Year.
Please note that a few spare pairs of skates (various sizes) have been kindly donated by the community
and are available for students who do not own skates.
