MARY THE MOTHER OF GOD –THE GOSPEL OF LIFE
O Mary, Bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do
we entrust the course of life; look down, O Mother upon us in your glory.
Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life
with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the
grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating
it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness
to it resolutely in order to build, together with all people of good will,
the civilization of truth and love, to praise and glory of God the creator
and lover of life.
Amen

Virtue of the Month- ACCEPTANCE
One of the great wonders of the world we live in is that no two people
are exactly alike. We may share biological families or national identity or
cultural and ethnic identity but we are all very unique and distinct
creations. God breaks the mold every time. And that is a fantastic fact of
life. Sometimes differences are scary, especially if we haven’t learned
about or don’t understand how people are different. The virtue of
acceptance means that we look beyond what we see, and see a person
created and loved by God. God you gave us the virtue of acceptance.

Parish Mission Statement
"As members of the St. John of the
Cross Parish Community, we
acknowledge that all we are and all
we have are gifts from God. We take
ownership of these gifts which are
time, talent and treasure. We will use
them in the service of our community
and encourage others in the
community to do the same”.
Avoid temptation to judge or negatively stereotype
Look for positive traits in others
Notice who is left out and includes them
Stick up for the disadvantaged.
Demonstrate an attitude of acceptance, trusting that
others will hear God’s voice in their way and in their own
time

Catholic Education Week
“Opening the Doors of Mercy”
May 1-May 8, 2016
As always Catholic Education Week begins on Sunday to highlight the
parish-home-school partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic
Education. We are pleased to announce the theme of 2016 is:
“Opening Doors of Mercy”
There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week.
Monday “Mercy that Welcomes”
Tuesday “Mercy that Loves”
Wednesday “Mercy that Forgives”
Thursday “Mercy that Lives the Gospel”
Friday “Mercy that Rejoices”
Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers,
administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith
which we hope to see many of you during our school celebrations. You
would have received our Education Week flyer with all the details of our
events. We invite you to participate in one or more of these activities as
your personal time and work schedule may permit.
Crowning of Mary
May is the month we dedicate
to Mary, the mother of our
Saviour, Jesus. During the
month of May, as we honour
Mary and all mothers, we are
reminded of the many
blessings mothers bestow upon
their children each and every
day.
On Tuesday, May 24, 2016 in
partnership with the Rosary
Apostolate, we will celebrate
and honour Mary, the mother
of Jesus and our Mother too.
All parents are welcome to join
our celebrations in the
gymnasium at 9:15 am (Primary
students), or 11:00 am (Junior/
Intermediate students).

School Procedures
Are You Moving?
To help us with our planning for next September, it would be appreciated if
you could let us know now, if you will be moving out of our school area over
the summer. If you know of any families moving into the area with children
who plan to attend St. Therese of the Child Jesus, it would be helpful if you
could alert us. The more information we have, the better we are able to
organize staff and students for September. In the absence of accurate
information, schools often have to reorganize classes in September due to
unexpected fluctuations in population. All we need is a quick note or call.
Thanks!
Safety First
Bicycle Safety
It is wonderful to see students bringing their bikes to school, however
students are reminded of the following regarding the safe operation of their
bicycle:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Wear a helmet
Obey all traffic rules when coming to school/ going home
Walk your bike when on school property
Students are asked to park and lock their bike on the bike racks
School is not responsible for any loss or damage to bikes
Protection from the Sun
As the weather warms up it is important that students are reminded of the
danger of overexposure to the sun. Please remind your child(ren) of the
following:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Wear protective clothing to cover exposed skin
Wear a hat to protect both the eyes and skin
When possible, stay out of direct sunlight
Wear sun block, the higher the protection factor number, the
greater the protection
5. Bring ample fluids to school to ensure hydration
Dress Code
We expect all students at St.
Therese of the Child Jesus to
come to school dressed in
clean, neat and modest
clothing (clothing suitable for
younger children may not be
appropriate for older children).
Appropriate classroom attire
excludes such things as, short
shorts, or skirts, cut-off jeans,
skintight yoga pants, shirts or
tops which do not cover the
midriff, spaghetti string tank
tops and any shirt with
offensive or questionable
messages. Proper footwear is
to be worn at all times (runners
for gym, indoor shoes for class,
boots for rain and snow).
Sunglasses and hats should be
removed upon entering the
school.
Allergy Awareness
There are a number of
students at our school that
have a severe life
threatening allergy. Due to
the severity of allergies within
our school, we ask that
parents not send in food
items to share with
classmates, not even during
special occasions such as
birthdays or Valentine’s Day
festivities. Please choose
stickers, pencils, etc. We will
not be permitting any food
items to be brought into a
classroom to share in order to
keep all of our students safe.
