Virtue of the Month – Love
Career Fair
St. Simon Stock School Catholic School Council
will be hosting a Career Fair on Monday, May
2nd, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., for students in
Grades 7 and 8. Students will have an
opportunity to learn about specific occupations
and the importance of the subjects they study
in school.
You can help provide our students with new
ideas and interests that enhance this learning.
We are asking parents and friends from the
community to participate in our career fair and
discuss their occupations and roles in the
world of work. Would you be willing to
participate in our career fair and share
information about your occupation? We will
provide a list of suggestions to help you plan
for the day.
If you would like more information about this
event, please feel free to contact
Cathy Camilleri at cathyhathy@yahoo.ca. We
hope you will participate in our Career Fair
Catholic School Council
Our next school council meeting will take place on
April 6, 2016. The meeting will take place in the
school conference room at 6:30 p.m. All are
welcome to attend.
Reminder – PA Day
Please make sure you mark your calendars and
make appropriate arrangements. Monday April
11th, teachers will be involved in professional
development activities. There will be no classes for
students.
Theme: OPENING DOORS OF MERCY
The grade 3 and 6 students at St. Simon Stock
continue to prepare for the EQAO assessments
of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The
grade 6 students will write the test the week of
May 25th to 31st and the grade 3 students will
write during the week of June 1st to 6th. The
results of these tests will be received in the fall
of 2016.
How to prepare your child for the test?
It is important that you take the time to talk to
your child and help reduce the anxiety related
to any type of testing situation. Please ensure
that your child has enough sleep, eats a
nutritious breakfast and is well hydrated. It is
important that if your child is in grade 3 or 6,
that they be in full attendance during the
assessment.
Catholic schools are Catholic communities.
Catholic schools are faith communities. We –
parents, students, teachers, administrative and
support staff – walk and grow together in the
faith which we received at our Baptism. And it
is the ‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is
primarily a relationship with God, who at our
Baptism, called us by name. But the response
of each of us to that growth is both personal
and communal. We grow in our faith in the
nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic
community be that of our local parish, our
home, or our Catholic school community.
The sub-themes for Catholic Education Week
2016 are as follows:
Monday: Mercy that Welcomes (Jesus and the
Woman at the Well: John 4: 1-42)
Earth day is usually
celebrated with outdoor
activities. This year the St.
Simon Stock staff and
students will be cleaning
up our school yard, peace
garden, local baseball diamond, soccer field
and park, on Friday, April 22nd. On Earth day
all students will also be participating in fun
earth day activities in the classroom. So let’s
raise awareness and an appreciation for our
environment!
Tuesday: Mercy that Loves (The Good Samaritan:
Luke 10:25-37)
Wednesday: Mercy that Forgives (The Prodigal Son:
Luke 15:11-32)
Thursday: Mercy that Lives the Gospel (Zacchaeus:
Luke 19:1-10)
Friday: Mercy that Rejoices (Healing of the Paralytic:
Luke 5: 17-26)
We hope to see you during our school
celebrations the week of May 2nd to the 6th.
Schedule of events to follow.

The staff of St. Simon Stock School will be
meeting in early June to discuss class
placements for September 2016. When
determining placement, some of the criteria we
consider are: academic ability, learning skills,
social factors and placement history. Since you
know your child best, we appreciate your
input concerning any special needs your
child(ren) may have. We request that you
submit in writing, by April 29th, your child’s
strengths, needs and a description of their
learning style, including the type of learning
environment that would provide your child
with the most success. Please do not make
requests for a specific teacher as teaching
assignments may change between now and
September.
When staff meets they will take into
consideration the overall needs of the students
in relation to the make-up of the class. We will
also take into consideration any parental input
received
Growth Mindset
Thank you to all the parents that attended our
growth mindset parent meeting. It was a very
successful evening.
As educators at St. Simon Stock, we are
continually looking for ideas to help our
students’ value life-long learning and see their
role in achieving their personal goals.
Students with a growth mindset, (students
who believe that they can develop intelligence
over time), may tackle such work with
excitement, whereas students with a fixed
mindset (students who believe that intelligence
is an inborn trait,) may feel threatened by
learning tasks that require them to stretch and
take risks.
Much of the research on Growth Mindset is
based on Dr. Carol Dweck’s research. Dweck’s
work is having a great impact on the way we
are teaching your child at St. Simon Stock.
Dweck also provides valuable information for
parents in her research, so for the next few
newsletters I will be sharing some of what
we’ve learned in her groundbreaking work
that you can use to help your child grow into a
self-resilient, lifelong learner.
Dweck says, “Parents think they can hand
their children permanent confidence-like a giftby praising their brains and talent. Guess
what? It doesn’t work. In fact research shows
that this kind of praise has the opposite effect.
It makes children doubt themselves as soon as
anything is hard or anything goes wrong. If
parents want to give their child a true gift, the
best thing they can do is to teach their children
to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes,
enjoy effort and keep on learning.
Below are some of Dweck’s suggests that
parents can use to foster a growth-mindset in
their child:
 Don’t praise ability – Praise your child’s
effort, the strategies they used, the
choices they made, their persistence.
 Avoid labels – Praising for efforts sends
the message that your child has the
power to improve and change.
Constantly labeling him “smart” gives
him little control over changing how
he/she is perceived.
