Thanks be to God, Alleluia, Alleluia! The small fragile flame of the big candle burns brightly. There in front of all, it chases away the dark night and joyfully proclaims: It’s Easter! Jesus is risen from the tomb! Happy Easter! April is now upon us and spring like conditions are beginning to surface. With the awakened enthusiasm and resurgence of energy that the onset of spring typically brings, we look forward to meeting the old and new challenges that await us during the last three months of the school year. It is our sincere wish that the hope generated by the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the spring season, brings everyone in the St. Elizabeth Seton community happiness and a renewal of the Spirit for the remainder of the year. Catholic School Graduate Expectations: I Care During the month of April, I Care will be presented on our announcements, through our prayers and daily practice. Students are learning: -I love God, myself and my family -I care about and respect my ‘family’ at school, at Church , in the community and the world -I care about creation and everything in it Because I care, I pray for all my families, and I will live my life with Jesus. Celebrating Virtues Each Month A Catholic faith community is rooted in a set of common beliefs about God’s will for all people. A virtue is a habit or established capacity to perform good actions according to a moral standard. When we practice these virtues we strengthen them and thereby make the presence of God more and more visible in the world around us. Our next Virtue Assembly will be April 20 @ 1:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. Education Week—May 1-6, 2016 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” – Matthew 5:7 The sub-themes for Catholic Education Week 2016 are as follows: 1. Additional Professional Activity Day: Monday, April 11, 2016 In the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, the designated additional Professional Activity Day has been scheduled for Monday, April 11, 2016. Throughout the last few months, St. Elizabeth Seton School’s “Earth Ambassadors” have been working diligently to promote, educate and inspire our community to protect and care for God’s earth through promoting our green initiatives, recycling presentations and energy conservation walkabouts. The whole school has shown dedication to the Go-Green challenges: Motor-less Monday, Two-Light Tuesday, Water Bottle-less Wednesday, Think-Before-You-Toss Thursday, and Waste Free Fridays. Spring has sprung and that means that the weather is warming up making walking to school even easier to do. If you cannot walk to school, there are many opportunities to walk in our community – public library, church, etc. This change in your lifestyle has numerous health benefits but it also helps reduce air pollution allowing everyone to breathe-in fresh air so they feel better and stay focused. ECO Initiative-Share Life Used Book Sale Wednesday, May 4, 2016 NEEDED: gently used children’s books for our Used Book Sale Books can include: novels, picture books, non-fiction and fiction. If you have any books that you would like to donate, please drop them off in the main foyer. Donations will be made to Share Life Thank you for your support! Safety First when dropping off and picking up students at school The safety of all children and staff must be considered as paramount at all times when dropping students off at school. The number of serious incidents related to traffic circulation at the front of the school and in the Kiss and Ride area during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal has risen. These incidents include vehicles passing other cars while in the Kiss and Ride lane, parking in no parking zones and parking in bus lanes, to name a few. It is imperative that all parents and guardians who drive their children to school adhere to the traffic circulation plan and comply with the traffic and parking signage on the site. It is equally imperative that all drivers follow the direction of school staff managing the traffic circulation on the school site. Thank you for your consideration and co-operation with this important matter. Your child may have a vision problem. And with 80% of their learning being done through their eyes, vision issues can have a severe impact on your child’s ability to learn. Parents will not often be able to detect a problem. Signs and symptoms can be subtle. Children rarely know that they have a vision problem, and they can’t always tell you what they see. Make sure they can see to the best of their ability by getting them a comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist. Eye exams and follow-ups are covered under OHIP for children under 19 years-old, so there are no out-of-pocket costs. Just show your Ontario Health card. For this year’s Junior Kindergarten students, the Eye See…Eye Learn® program offers one complementary pair of glasses with their OHIP-covered eye exam, if prescribed by a participating optometrist. Learn more at www.EyeSeeEyeLearn.ca. Learn to Skate Our Grades 3-5 students will be involved in a “Learn to Skate” program. These students will be going to Meadowvale Four Rinks on May 11, 18 and 24. More information to follow. BICYCLE FOUND Late last month, a bicycle was found on school property. We would like to make every effort to reconnect the bicycle with it’s rightful owner. If you feel that the bicycle belongs to you, please come to the Main Office and provide us with a detailed description of the missing bicycle. Playground Supervision Dressing For the Weather It is imperative that all students come to school ready to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. Weather is especially unpredictable in the Spring. Please ensure that your children come to school dressed according to the day’s weather forecast. As well, all students should have indoor footwear at school. This is essential in case of an emergency evacuation. Outdoor shoes/ boots will be kept for outdoor use only and out of the classrooms in order to reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will assist our custodial staff in keeping the school clean. We also recommend that students keep extra clothing such as socks and pants at school in case their original clothing gets wet. Thank you for your co-operation. This begins at 8:30 a.m. Parents should not drop off their children prior to 8:30 a.m. For your child’s safety, we request that he/she not be on school property until scheduled supervised times. Playground Activity Leaders in Schools P.A.L.S. P.A.L.S. encourages children to participate in physical activities during recess breaks. School staff and students (grades 5&6) have been recently trained by our Public Health Nurse, Natalie . The objectives of P.A.L.S. include: -increased physical activity -decrease conflict and reduce the incidents of playground bullying -provide leadership opportunities for Students We encourage grade 1-4 students to look for students wearing red pinnies and engage in some fun games outdoors. Before and After School Programs PLASP operates a BEFORE SCHOOL PROGRAM that begins at 7:30 a.m., with children receiving a nutritional breakfast and participating in recreational activities. In the AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM, which runs from 3:15 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., the children enjoy a healthy snack, recreational activities, and have time for homework. PLASP Child Care Services operates the ideal programs for children to participate everyday with friends in recreational activities in a supervised setting. PLASP is a registered, not-for-profit provider of childcare. Fee assistance is available. No Child Without® is a charitable program that offers all elementary school aged children with medical conditions or allergies, free MedicAlert protection regardless of their financial resources. This is especially helpful for students with Anaphylaxis. Brochures are in the front lobby of the school. EQAO GRADE 3 AND 6 PROVINCIAL ASSESSMENT OF READING, WRITING AND MATHEMATICS All grade 3 and 6 students in Ontario will again be participating in the Educational Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) Provincial Assessments scheduled to take place from May 25th to June 8th, 2016. We would ask that if possible, please try to avoid booking appointments or vacations for your grade 3 and 6 children during this assessment period. Please discuss with your child the importance of these assessments and encourage them to do their very best. Determining Class Placements for September 2016 The staff of St. Elizabeth Seton School will meet in the spring to begin discussing appropriate placement for each student for September 2016. When determining placement some of the criteria we consider are: academic ability, individual work habits and study skills, maturity, date of birth, social factors, and placement history. We aim for classes that have a balance of gender, ability and behavioral needs. As you know your child best, we appreciate your input concerning special needs for your son or daughter. With this in mind, if you have input about your child’s class placement for September 2016, we ask that you put your concerns in writing. A St. Elizabeth Seton School Class Placement Input Form is attached for you to print or you can pick up a copy from the office. A new form is to be completed each year as we do not retain requests from one year to the next. Parents/Guardians are asked to include in your request the strengths and needs of your child along with a description of his/her learning style. You may wish to include the type of learning environment in which your child has experienced the most success. Please do not make requests for specific teachers as staffing is always tentative and changes can, and often do, take place between the time of tentative class placement and September. All completed forms should be returned to the school by May 2, 2016. When staff meets to determine tentative student placement we will consider your input as well as input from the classroom and resource teachers and, if we can accommodate your wishes, we will do so. It is not always possible to honour all requests. Rest assured that our decisions are made only after careful consideration of all the information and are based on the individual need of each child balanced with the common good of the entire community.
