Dear Lord,

We pray that this New Year will bring us closer to You.

May we take the time to get to know You.

Help us to truly celebrate the gifts You have graciously given us and use them to serve You and spread Your word.

May we also see and love You in all the people we meet so that, in turn, they can see You in us.

We ask this through Christ ,our Lord,

The Christmas season gave us all a wonderful reminder of the light that Jesus was in His time on Earth: a light in the darkness; hope amid despair. May we each use this reminder to be mindful that we are called to be the light in the lives of those that we meet—those that require understanding and kindness and forgiveness. At

St. Elizabeth Seton, we have become quite adept at living our mission statement to be gifts of God, working together to serve the Lord Jesus and one another. A lofty goal, true: but one worth striving to achieve.

Best wishes for a wonderful year in 2016!

Christmas donations to those in need

Thank you so much to those of you who helped make our St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Drive a huge success! Money and gift cards, totaling over $700.00, were given to St. John of the Cross Parish to support families through the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

It was very heartwarming to see the generosity of our school community. Thank you for making somebody else’s Christmas a little happier. God bless!

Seton Spirit Day

United Way and St. Vincent de Paul Society

On Friday, December 4th our school held the annual Spirit Day to raise money for the United Way and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The staff at Seton had a wonderful and exciting day! In total, our school community raised $550.00. A big thank you to all!

Rosary Apostolate

Volunteers with the Apostolate continue to lead the students to Jesus through the

Blessed Virgin Mary, during their monthly visits to pray the rosary. The next visit by the

Rosary Apostolate is scheduled to take place on Monday, January 11th.

Feast Day Mass

Tuesday, January 19th

7:00 pm

St. John of the Cross Parish

All are welcome!

“The Giving Tree”

During the Advent Season our school collected new mittens, gloves, hats and scarves for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Monetary donations were also accepted. As well, the school community collected socks for “Jordan’s Socks”, a campaign for the homeless.

The Student Faith Ambassadors decorated the Christmas tree with the donated clothing items. Our tree looked absolutely beautiful and was a source of inspiration, as staff, students, parents and visitors witnessed the originally empty tree overflow with the donated clothing items.

Family Advent Mass

We are so very proud of every single one of our students and the incredible job they did for our Family

Advent Mass on Wednesday, December 08, 2015 at St. John of the Cross Parish. Thank you to Father

Joseph who celebrated Mass with us, to the teachers in the Primary Division who organized the Mass, to the Staff who were in attendance that night, to the many teachers who assisted with the enormous choir that sang so beautifully and, finally, to all the students who participated. It was delightful to have so many families join us on this occasion.

The school would also like to thank the many parent volunteers from our Catholic School Council who volunteered their time and arranged for the refreshments and snacks in the Parish Hall, immediately following Mass.

ARE YOU TICKED?

Direction of school support has long been an issue for Catholic school boards in Ontario. The fact is that, unless the municipality is notified, the school support designation, for assessment purposes, automatically defaults to public school support when an individual or family moves to a new address.

This may have an impact on students’ eligibility to attend Catholic elementary schools, trustee representation on school boards, and on government’s perception of support for Catholic education.

We want to bring a greater awareness around this matter and have created the Are You Ticked? campaign as the communication vehicle for this awareness.

If you would like more information on school support designation or would like us to help you check or change your school support designation to the Catholic system, please call us at (905) 890-0708, ext. 24512.

IMMUNIZE ON TIME

REPORT EVERY TIME.

Report all immunizations your child receives to Peel

Public Health.

**online at www.immunizepeel/.ca

** call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7000.

Student records are reviewed annually. Over an eleven week period, students with incomplete records receive three letters mailed directly to them to request immunization information.

If parents/students DO NOT provide the required immunization information, the student will be suspended from school.

PLEASE NOTE :

Please send the above information to Peel Public Heath, not to the school Thank you.

Flex Boundary Admissions

Current flex admissions are not guaranteed. If you move out of the school catchment area it is in the best interest of your child that he or she attend their local school.

Flex boundary admissions must be requested in writing to the school Principal each year.

FRONT DOOR ENTRY SYSTEM

Parents and guardians are reminded that school entry doors are locked during the school day. Parents who enter the school are not to permit access to others who wish to enter the building. If anyone arrives late, they will need to ring the buzzer by the main entrance and wait until the door can be unlocked for them.

Although we try our best, there may be times where you may have to wait to gain entry, as staff in the office may be attending to other matters and cannot respond immediately, as soon as you ring the bell.

Kiss and Ride Lane-Safety First

We ask that you arrive on school property before 8:45 am to drop off your child(ren).

Please remain in the car lane and move forward as children come out of cars on the passenger side of the vehicle.

We ask that you do not pass stopped cars in the lane in order to move to the front of the lane. Students are walking to the yard and injuries may occur.

Please be patient and wait for your turn to release your child(ren).

Following these practices should provide for a more safe Kiss and Ride Lane.

Note from a Doctor

Sometimes, illness or injury makes parents feel as though their children would require to remain indoors for recess. Should you feel that this applies to your child(ren), you should be aware that the school will only entertain such requests when accompanied by a note from a medical doctor.

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

With so many activities that take place in the school playground, the gym and sporting activities, accidents at school sometimes do occur.

The Dufferin-Peel CDSB does not carry accidental insurance for students.

Outdoor/indoor activities, extra-curricular excursions and winter snow/ice conditions are additional reasons that parents may wish to consider purchasing student accident insurance.

An insurance brochure was provided to all families at the beginning of the school year; however, brochures are still available in the main foyer if any family is interested in purchasing this additional coverage.

Measurement

Measurement concepts and skills are directly applicable to the world in which we live.

People with measurement sense have an understanding of the “howmuchness”.

Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth

New

Tip # 4 .

What do we mean by

“ growth mindset

?

Growth mindset is a belief system that suggests that one ’ s intelligence can be grown or developed with persistence, effort and a focus on learning.

Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset:

- Mary Cay Ricci

Be Mindful of the Goals You Set For Your Children and the

Messages They Send

Web Resources:

http://pbskids.org/games/math/

Work with your child to set goals that are reasonable and desirable for both of you.

All goals should emphasize growth – the development of a skill or the expanding knowledge.

Grades 7 & 8: Continuing the Conversation about

Financial Literacy

Let’s discuss “Money in the News”…

Have your child monitor the news

Measurement from 4-6

Big Idea: The same object can be described by using different measurements.

What objects can you find that are big in one way but small in another way. (eg:

A very tall, very thin cylinder could be considered big in terms of height but small in terms of width.) in all its forms (t.v., on-line…) to identify stories about money.

Talk with your child about some of the stories or items they have heard about in the news (e.g., how could this ‘news story’ impact our community and/or family financially?)

Dental Health

Keeping smiles bright in Peel

Peel Public Health School Dental Screening

Peel Public Health provides dental screening in Peel elementary schools as required by the Ontario Ministry of Health and

Long-Term Care.

A Peel Public Health registered dental hygienist and certified dental assistant will be visiting your child’s school on January 19,

2016 to provide a FREE dental screening.

What is dental screening?

-a dental screening is a quick look inside the child’s mouth

-a separate, sterilized mouth mirror is used for each child

-if the parent does not have a dental plan and cannot afford to take the child to the dentist, the child may be eligible for free dental care

-a dental screening does not replace regular dental visits

-if the parent DOES NOT wish to have their child participate in the FREE dental screening, they can fill in the School Screening

Exemption form (which will be given out by the child’s teacher’s) and give the completed form to the child’s teacher prior to the screening date.

For more information, call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 or visit www.peelregion.ca/dental

Head Injuries

As per Board protocol, each time a student sustains a head injury the incident will be logged and followed up with a phone call. As well, students will be receiving a “Concussions are

Serious” pamphlet. It is recommended to review the pamphlet and look for signs and symptoms of a concussion.

Students Arriving Late to School

We have had an increase in the number of students who arrive late to school in the mornings and after lunch. Especially as more wintry weather approaches, it is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines.

School starts at 8:45am. Students should be at school with enough time to line up with their classes. Please note that if they do not arrive on time to make it to their line as the bell rings, they need to enter through the front doors to pick up a late slip before going to class.

Catholic School Council Corner

Our next meeting is Thursday, January 14, 2016.

The meeting will be held in the library at 6:30pm.

Come find out what is going on in your school and how you can get involved.

All are welcome to attend.

Please refer to the school website for pizza and subway lunch dates. All forms are available on the website.

Pancake Tuesday is coming.

If you would like to volunteer on February 9th, please inform the office.

Early School Closures-Weather

In the event that it is necessary to dismiss students early or close the school during the school day, parents will be notified.

Please ensure that home phone numbers, cell numbers and emergency contacts are up to date.

If there have been any changes, please contact the school or send a note with your child.
