Our hope is that you all had a terrific summer: resting,
playing and relaxing. We would like to take this
opportunity to welcome any and all new students and
their families to our school. We welcome new staff
members to St. Elizabeth Seton School including: Mrs.
A. Scornaienchi (Gr. 3 French Immersion), Ms. M. Gagnon (Gr. 1 French Immersion LTO), Mrs. B.
Ramanauskas (Gr. 4 French Immersion & Planning
Time LTO), Ms. V. Nordt (Gr. 4/5) and Mrs. N.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mr.
M. Figliola (Gr 4/5) for his assistance at the beginning of
this school year.
During the summer, our custodial staff worked endlessly
to clean and prepare the school building for our
community. Our school secretary also prepared for the
opening of our school office and managed office procedures and organization. All staff have been preparing
their classrooms prior to the childrens’ first day and we
are all excited for the start of a new year. We are
blessed to have a strong parish relationship with St.
John of the Cross Parish through Rev. J. Kalluvila, an
active Catholic School Council, a dedicated Trustee in
Esther O’Toole, a wonderful Superintendent, Tilia Cruz,
and supportive parents.
The staff of St Elizabeth Seton Catholic Elementary
School are committed to working with our partners in
education to support our children in their quest for
knowledge, happiness and spiritual development. Together we can ensure that this will be a very successful
school year.
We look forward to an exciting year together rooted in
faith

You are to come to the office to sign in and get a late slip.
Those who are often late will be tracked at the office.

Virtues Initiative
A Catholic Faith community is rooted in a set of common beliefs which are inspired by the life, mission and
teachings of Jesus. As a Catholic Community we are called to learn, to grow and to become more like Jesus in the
way we see and treat others. Our Catholic faith plays an important role in helping us shape schools that are safe,
caring and inclusive.
St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School will continue with the “Virtues Program” this year. This program is designed to
help us nurture virtue and character development in the lives of our students. Each month, the entire school will
focus on a different virtue. Classroom activities and school wide activities will all focus on the nurturing of a specific
virtue.
We would appreciate your support in discussing these virtues with your child and
encouraging behaviors' that would demonstrate these virtues. Here is a list:

Terry Fox Walk/Run Day
The Fall of 2015 marks the 35th year of the amazing and
courageous charity run of Terry Fox. A Terry Fox
charity event will be held here at St. Elizabeth Seton on
Friday, September 25th.
More information forth coming.
Seton Staff Supports
ShareLife/United Way
Staff members are active participants in
“Dress-Down Friday’s”
where a donation is made to
United Way and ShareLife.
Staff members continue to support those less
fortunate.
Students in Grades 2 - 8 will be using school agendas to help
develop their organizational skills. Please take some time to
look over your child’s agenda. It is used daily to help assist
your child with organization. It is also an effective vehicle we
use to keep parents informed on what is happening in class
and in the school. The cost of the agenda is shared between
the school and Catholic school council . Thank you to the St.
Elizabeth Seton Catholic School Council for covering part of
the cost of the student agendas this
year. The cost of replacing a lost
agenda is $12.00.
Hepatitis B. & Meningitis Inoculations
Peel Health will continue to offer free immunization against
Hepatitis B and meningococcal shots for students in Grade 7.
The HPV vaccine is also scheduled for the girls in grade 8.
If you have any questions please call the Peel Health
Department at 905-799-7700.
Forms will be sent home with your child.
The date for the first dose has been scheduled for Tuesday,
October 13th.
You will be notified of the second date later in the year.
Picture Day
Picture Day is Wednesday, October 14th.
Please check your children’s backpacks for your reminder.
Newsletters
Newsletters will be sent home with the youngest or only child in the family in September.
Afterwards, newsletters will be available through our website at www.dpcdsb.org/SETON or sign up to receive the
newsletter by email.
Our newsletters are meant to serve as a means of communication between home and school. They will inform you
about various school activities, programs, routines, reminders and so forth and will be supplemented by letters
concerning special events, trips, religious celebrations, etc.
If you do not have a computer, please send your child to the office, as a few copies will be available.
Please check our Twitter feed (@SetonWildcats) for school information also.

Medication At School
Please be advised that for safety reasons, no child should
bring any form of medication to school without prior
approval from the office. The school will store necessary medication if proper documentation has been filled
out.
If you require a form or have questions regarding the
storage of medication, please contact the office.
All Epi Pens need medical forms filled out by the
Physician in order to be stored at school.
IF YOUR CHILD HAS A LIFE
THREATENING ALLERGY,
CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY.
WE NEED TO KNOW!
As we begin a new school year we would like to inform you that
St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School, is an Allergen Aware
school. There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe
and life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut
and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can
cause severe life threatening reactions.
Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction.
The most common allergen triggers are foods containing
peanuts, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex.
We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school
community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that
contain nuts, nut oils or derivatives (e.g. peanut butter,
peanuts, or peanut oil) which could potentially harm a
pupil.
Please avoid sending food for the whole class to celebrate
birthdays or special occasions. There are many alternatives
such as stickers and pencils or the donation of a classroom
game.
If you have any questions please talk to your child’s teacher or
the school staff.
We look forward to your co-operation in making this a safe year
for all our pupils.
Staff Communication
Every effort will be made by your child’s teacher to keep you informed of his/her progress and involvement in class.
If you wish to speak with a teacher, a note sent with your child requesting a call is usually sufficient. If, however, you
wish to contact a teacher by telephone, please telephone the office. If the teacher is not available, you are asked to
please leave a message.
We also ask your consideration in NOT dropping into classes unannounced during school hours. If your child is late
and you are bringing him/her to school, or if you come to school to meet your child or to pick him/her up for an
appointment , we respectfully request that you check in at the office and SIGN your child IN or OUT.
The SIGN IN BINDER is located in the office.
Cell Phones, i- Pods, MP3 Players and
Electronic Games
We continue to follow the school Board policies with regard to Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs). Students sent to
school with cell phones cannot have the phones on during school hours.
They are not necessary and do become a distraction for your child and others during the instructional day. Advanced
technology such as camera phones becomes a safety concern with regard to the privacy of other children. If you feel
that a cell phone is necessary for your child before or after school hours, please ensure that they keep
the phone turned off and out of sight while at school. Please be advised that if a cell phone is exposed on
school premises it will be removed and you will be contacted. Students should not be carrying a cell
phone while in class. It is also not permitted for students to use a cell phone inside or outside the school
building during school hours.
Dress Code
Students should dress in a manner conducive to good
behaviour and to the creation of a good educational
atmosphere in the school.
It is not our intention to undermine your responsibility for
determining appropriate grooming and dress for your
children. At the same time, there is an expectation that all
students be clean, neat and appropriately dressed.
We ask for your continued support for a dress code which
reflects the school as a place for serious work,
accompanied by standards of sensitivity, politeness and
decorum.
School Use of Materials
The school will provide your child with many of the
regular school materials such as pens, pencils, workbooks and textbooks.
It is important that children
learn to make proper use of these materials. Your
child’s teacher will explain our expectations in this
matter.
One of our expectations is that students will be
responsible for the replacement of lost books or
damaged materials including texts or library
books, both of which are quite expensive.
Student Accident Insurance
As required by the Education Act and the Ministry of Education, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
annually provides parents with information about cost-effective student accident insurance coverage. Although
enrolment is voluntary, the board encourages parents to take advantage of the inexpensive insurance coverage,
especially if their child/children participate in sports, excursions/field trips, or, if parents do not have dental insurance
coverage.
Enrolment is required in writing -- there are two options for enrolment:
1) Complete the traditional form and mail it in
2) Photocopy the form and fax it to Reliable Life at 1-905-522-7211 or 1-800-463-KIDS (5437).
School Council News
Help Needed for the 2015/2016 School Year
Volunteers are needed as members of the 2015/2016 St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School Council. Many vital
programs are funded and made possible by the work of the members of our Catholic School Council. These
programs include the following: busses for school masses, religious pins for the First Communion and Confirmation
programs, student agendas, and school presentations (i.e. authors, musicians and drama ). Without the ongoing
support of our Catholic School Council, these programs will be in jeopardy. Information regarding participation in the
school council is available at the school office.
Catholic School Council Elections
An active and enthusiastic Catholic School Council is essential to the success of any school. Sincere appreciation is
extended to all those parents who participated in the School Council last year. Your efforts have contributed to the
education and development of all of our students here at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School.
Elections and/or the selection of executive positions for the 2015/2016 School Council will be conducted at the first
council meeting of this year on Monday, October 5 at 6:30 pm in the Library.
Forms will be available in the office during the period of September 21-30th for anyone interested in being part of the
Catholic School Council executive for the school year 2015/2016.
The deadline for submission of these forms is 2:30 pm on Thursday, October 1st. Please mark these dates
down in your calendars and do come out and participate.
YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VERY MUCH NEEDED!
CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECK & DECLARATION
FORMS FOR VOLUNTEERS
PLASP
In accordance with school board policies, all volunteers having direct
and regular contact with students are required to provide a Criminal
Reference Check. There is no fee for volunteers wishing to have a
Criminal Reference Check. Peel Regional Police have instituted a new
policy whereby volunteers must bring an official letter from the school
verifying your volunteer role. Without this letter signed by the principal,
you will be charged for your CRC. If there are any community
members wishing to volunteer in the school, please visit the school
office to pick up a volunteer and Criminal Reference Check form and
letter.
PLASP operates a Before and After
School Program, in this school, for children up to 12 years of age.
Due to Full Day Kindergarten , PLASP is
also offering a before and after school
program for these younger children.
For more information,
call the PLASP Head Office at
905-890-1711 or visit www.plasp.com
Parking Available
We would like to inform parents\guardians that the Community Christian Reform Church of Meadowvale has
graciously offered us use of their parking space to alleviate our traffic flow during morning and afternoon “rush hour.”
Please note that the Church does reserve the 4 parking spots closest to the lake and the park so that bus
companies can park their vehicles in these spots. Please be mindful of this arrangement when parking your
vehicle at the Church.
Pediculosis
(Head Lice)
Keeping Our School Community Safe
Initiatives and efforts will continue this year to make St. Elizabeth
Seton Catholic School a safe environment for all of our students. Procedures are in place to ensure that strangers do not
have access to our school and the comprehensive approach to
minimize bullying will be continued. This approach includes
participation from public health professionals, police officers, child
service agencies, students and school staff. We appreciate your
continued co-operation with and support of our various safe
school initiatives.
Pediculosis is a problem which occurs from time
to time each year in schools. If cases are found
we inform all parents of the class involved by
letter. If a child is infected, we request that she/
he be kept out of school until she/he has been
treated with the correct medicated shampoo.
Students are to be seen in the office prior to returning to class.
Please keep us informed if this happens to your
child.
Medic Alert
The Canadian MedicAlert® Foundation is a charitable organization which is the leading provider of emergency medical information services linked to customized medical bracelets and necklaces. We are pleased to be able to offer MedicAlert memberships
to students (from age 4 to their 14th birthday) through the No
Child Without® program in select schools. The financial support of
the Government of Canada and Lions Clubs allows students to
receive the MedicAlert membership for FREE.
For the safety of the students,
please keep dogs off the school
property. This applies to all dogs
regardless of size or breed.
Thank you
ECO Schools
In an effort to be environmentally conscience, St. Elizabeth Seton will no longer be providing plastic
forks and spoons to the students and staff.
Please ensure that your child has the appropriate utensils for lunch.
We encourage all parents to send lunches in reusable containers as a way to eliminate waste.
Keep Students Engaged in Learning
Parents, please help us minimize classroom disruptions by not knocking at or peeking in
Classroom windows. Removing students from class during the instructional day is usually reserved only for urgent situations. Please make any necessary arrangements with your child at
home and not during the school day.
Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Ontario’s School Foods and Beverage Policy
The Ministry of Education’s School Food and Beverage Policy requires healthier food and
beverage choices to be offered in Ontario schools. Food and beverages offered on
school premises must comply with requirements set out in the policy. Look forward to
some healthier changes in our special lunch days! More information can be found at:
www.edu/gov.on.ca/extra/eng/ppm/150.html

Promoting a Healthy and Safe School
EARLY ARRIVAL
Students must remain outside of the school building until 8:45 a.m. Students arriving prior to this time should go to
the area where their class assembles for entry.
In case of inclement weather teachers on duty will advise the students where to wait inside the building, beginning at
8:30 am.
WALKERS
Please continue to instruct your child regarding safe passage to school; i.e. crossing with the guard, and / or at
signed locations, walking with a buddy, and to always watch out for vehicles. Drivers please drive slowly and
Carefully at all times while on school property.
KISS & RIDE / CHURCH PARKING LOT
The Kiss & Ride Lane is designated to drop off your child(ren). Have your child(ren) exit your vehicle from the passenger side, this ensures greater safety. We strongly discouraged children walking through the drive-thru and Kiss
and Ride lane.
Please DO NOT park in the School Parking Lot between 8:15-8:45 am and 3:00-3:45 pm
Please be reminded that cars should never be parked or left unattended in the front lanes of our school. If you need
to escort your child to the school or yard please park in the church parking lot behind St. Elizabeth Seton (Inlake Rd).
The church has been kind enough to allow parents to use their parking lot before and after school each day.
If you are planning to visit the school for an extended period of time or want to pick up your child(ren), especially at
the end of the day, please use this area. Parents who park their cars in the Kiss & Ride lane, especially between
3:15-3:30 pm are making it unsafe for children to leave the school and you risk receiving a traffic ticket from the City
Parking Control. Also, please turn off your cars; idling pollutes our air!
LEAVING DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
Parents are asked to send a note to the teacher stating the time your child is to meet you in the office area.
Please be aware that no child is allowed to leave the school during the school day without a signed and dated note
from the parent.
LUNCH POLICY
Students who stay at school for lunch are not permitted to leave the school property. If there is ever a need to do so,
a written request signed and dated, from a parent is required for each occurrence.
Parents must sign their child out and in when taking them for lunch. In Grade 7 and 8, parents may check the NO
option on the annual permission form.
Please remember, that if you have given your child blanket permission to leave the school property at lunch time, or
give them specific permission in writing on individual days to leave school property at lunch time, the school cannot
assume responsibility for their supervision once off school property. Some students may choose to go to the plaza at
the corner of Britannia and Glen Erin for lunch, necessitating that they cross a busy intersection. Your support in
reviewing lunch hour expectations with your child(ren) and discussing safety issues would be very helpful.
If you are dropping off a lunch for your child, please have it clearly marked with your child’s name and inform your
child that it will be left for them on our lunch table in the front hall. Considering that the office becomes a very busy
place at lunch time, please make prior arrangements with your child regarding the pick up of lunches. In order to
avoid class interruptions, students will not be called to the office before 11:30 a.m. Please refer to pg. 3 of this
newsletter for information regarding our Front Doors Locked Policy and its’ impact on dropping off lunches for
students.

Student Verification Sheet-Emergency Information
It is vital that the school is able to contact you during school hours. We have on record telephone numbers for home,
work and an emergency contact person. In order to keep our records up-to-date, please update the Student
Verification Sheet that was recently sent home with your child.
It is vital that information be kept up to date in order for the school to contact you in case of an emergency.
Fire Drills/Lockdown/Hold &Secure/
Shelter in Place
It is Board Policy to practice these essential drills
throughout the course of the school year.
You need to know that in case we have to evacuate the school, our evacuation site is Meadowvale
Community Church on Inlake Road.
A REMINDER: Students must wear shoes in the
school building at all times. If the fire alarm goes
off, students will not be permitted to stop to put on
shoes, coats, hats etc. Their safety is our first
priority.
Please ensure that your child has an extra pair of
shoes at school, especially during the winter
months.
Head Injury Policy-Concussion Protocol
When a student receives an injury/bump to the head (however
minor), it is Board Policy that we inform parents. A phone call will
be made or a message will be left at one of your contact numbers
and a concussion pamphlet (We want to give you a heads up–
Concussions are serious) will be sent home with your child. This is
precautionary only and we ask that you check your child when
they get home for any signs of a concussion or illness.
If you decide to bring your child to the physician, we will provide
you with the proper documentations to filled out and returned to
school.
HOPE Project
The Archdiocese of Toronto is trying to raise $3,ooo,ooo to bring
100 Syrian families to Canada. We at St. Elizabeth Seton want to
contribute our share. For every coin (change) your child donates,
he/she will receive a small heart to colour and attach to the word
HOPE and for every bill, your child will receive a large heart. Our
contributions to this cause will be posted in the main foyer. Please
show your generous Seton spirit and a give a
Syrian family the HOPE for a peaceful life here in
Canada. Our campaign runs from September
21-25. Thank you for your support.
Excursions and Field Trips
Educational trips which extend learning opportunities in curriculum areas do take place from time to time. Teachers
follow appropriate Board procedures when planning these excursions. A limited number of trips may be planned by
teachers.
BY LAW the school must have on file permission forms which must be signed by the parents/guardians. If on
the day of the excursion your child did not return his/her form, and the parents/guardians cannot come into the
school to sign the permission forms, the student will remain at the school.
VERBAL TELEPHONE PERMISSION IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES.

Homework Policy and Procedures
The Board-wide policy and procedures approach homework from a Catholic perspective that recognizes the importance of family
time and honors the bonds between school, family and parish. As a community, we recognize that the stronger these bonds, the
more effectively our students are able to learn and to develop the unique talents and gifts with which they are blessed. Information about the Homework Policy can be found on the Dufferin-Peel Board Website.
“I Support Catholic Education”
When you move, your “Direction of School Support” automatically defaults your direction to public
schools.
How can I help? By completing the form: “ Application for Direction of School Support ”
and by raising the voice to families and friends.
Who completes this form? Any owner of a house; any Catholic person who believes in
Catholic Education. You don’t have to have children, to complete this form. You don’t have to
wait until your child reaches school age to become a supporter. You just have to support the
Catholic Education by submitting this form.
When do I complete this form? When you move, even if your children don’t change
school, you still have to complete this form.
Where do I find this form? In your school office or on line ( “ Application for Direction of School Support ” )
Would I pay more taxes because of this? NO, this is a declaration where you want your tax to be directed. We
want to see Catholic schools continue to exist and flourish.
How do I find out if I’m correctly registered on the Municipal tax rolls? Check your Property Assessment Notice
that comes every year. Under “School Support Designation” make sure it states English Separate (This is the term for
English Catholic School Supporter) or call the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board Admissions Department at
905-890-0708 ext. 24500 and they will check the Municipal Rolls database for you.
What is a Snowbird?
A northerner who moves to a warmer southern state in winter
Any of several birds seen chiefly in winter
A member of the Air Demonstration Squadron of the Canadian Forces
Yes, all of the above are true, but students and staff at St. Elizabeth Seton were surprised and awed when
Snowbird 6 Outer Right Wing, Captain Maciej Hatta, landed in their very own gym to inspire and inform
them of the possibilities open to each and every one of them!
Captain ‘Match’, as he identified himself actually attended St. Elizabeth Seton in Junior and Senior
Kindergarten wa-a-a-a-y back in the late 1980s! He returned to entertain the students with a breathtaking video taken from the
cockpit of Snowbird Jets practicing over Toronto before their CNE appearance this year. Students quickly recognized the CN
tower and the Toronto skyline, both right side up AND UPSIDE DOWN! After a short informational talk about how he became a Snowbird and how, when they practice, they always keep the safety of themselves and their audiences an utmost priority, he answered many questions from excited students of all ages. He even invited 9 students to come up and practice the
Snowbird check-in before performing! Captain ‘Match’ concluded by showing a second short video with incredible footage again
taken from the cockpit of a Snowbird jet! Students left with an inspiring message to dream big, and then do what it takes to get
there! He did just that when he attended Seton and look at him now!
Thanks again to Captain ‘Match’ and we wish him all of God’s blessings and goodness! Safe flying!!
