Prayer For Spring
Blessed are You, Lord, for the glories of Spring.
The world bursts with the signs of resurrection;
Flowers stir in their winter beds,
poking through the last traces of snow.
The sun drenches us with its warmth, stirring the hidden and waiting life within the earth, within
us.
The world awakening reflects the movement of my heart and I am touched in the depths of my
spirit.
Art work in the power of Your hands, the spirit of drawing life from things both old and new.
To be praised are You, Lord for the blessings of spring.

Administrators’ Message…
God has given us many guidelines and examples of how to live our lives. He sent his Son
Jesus to make sure that we could see what life could be like. Jesus made one lesson clear
above all other lessons—the lesson to love. Love is not about us -it is about forgetting
ourselves and looking for the good of the other. That’s what Jesus did - he forgot about himself
on purpose. He chose to give up his life for the good of others. Making little sacrifices on
purpose so that others will have a bit of food, a bit of shelter, a bit of peace, a bit of quiet, a bit
of fun, a bit of friendship. Through prayer and concentration we can get better at showing love
to everyone we meet.

Virtue of the Month: Love
God has given us many people in our
lives to show us examples of LOVE. Our
families, teachers, and friends show us
their love every day. Love can be seen in
the simplest acts of kindness, such as sharing a pencil,
playing a game, or even saying thank-you. We should
always show our love for others because love is about
seeing the good in people even when they make us
angry. Sometimes the greatest acts of love happen
when we are angry, such as not hitting our sibling back
or not screaming at our friends. Jesus is always with us
and we should always try to remember His most
important lesson, the lesson of love, because love is not
about us-it is about looking out for the good of others.
Our Daily Prayer for April: Let us pray for the virtue of
love so that we will never be satisfied until all are
satisfied. AMEN
From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate
Expectations, a person with love:
† Relates to family intimacy and sexuality as God
given gifts, to be used as the creator intended
† Relates to family members in a loving,
compassionate and respectful manner especially
when the other seems 'unlovable'
† Respects the rights, responsibilities and
contributions of self and others
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and
with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall
love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other
commandment greater than these.
(Mark 12:30-31)
Welcome to T. Sarwan, who
joined St. Rose of Lima’s staff
effective, March 21st. T. Sarwan will
be teaching the mainstream Grade 7/8

Ontario Catholic School Graduate
Expectations
Distinctive expectations for graduates
of Catholic schools are determined
and shaped by the vision and destiny
of the human person emerging from
our faith tradition. Catholic education
views human life as an integration of
body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this
vision, Catholic education fosters the
search for knowledge as a lifelong
spiritual and academic quest.
The Graduate is expected to be:
1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith
community who celebrates the signs and sacred
mystery of God's presence through word, sacrament,
prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and
listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in
light of gospel values.
3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who
solves problems and makes responsible decisions with
an informed moral conscience for the common good.
4. A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who
develops and demonstrates their God-given potential.
5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning,
dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of
all and contributes to the common good.
6. A caring family member who attends to family,
school, parish, and the wider community.
7. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic
social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the
sacredness of human life.

Additional P.A. Day: (April 11, 2016)
News from the Library
Terms of the recent contract settlement between the
teacher federations and the Ministry of Education
included the provision of an additional Professional
Activity Day for the 2015-2016 school year for both
elementary and secondary schools. Recently, boards
were directed to schedule this additional Professional
Development Day on or before April 15, 2016. The
DPCDSB designated the additional P.A. Day for
Monday, April 11, 2016; therefore there were no
classes for either elementary or secondary students
on that day.
Students continue to visit the library and take out library
materials. Please ensure that your child or children
return their books on time. Each book or magazine is
allowed to be out for 2 weeks. If the books/ magazines
are not returned in 2 weeks they become overdue.
Classroom teachers are given notice of all students with
overdue books. A few days after the notice is read out in
class, students will receive overdue notices that go
home to parents.
Grade 2 First Communion
Our grade 2 students will receive their First Holy
Communion at Merciful Redeemer Church on
Saturday, April 16th at 5:00 pm. Thank you to
parents/guardians, Sister Diane, the Parish Team and D.
DiLella for preparing the children. Please plan to arrive
early as reserved seating is provided for the
students only.
Confirmation
Confirmation for our grade 7 and 8 students took place
at Merciful Redeemer Church on Saturday, April 9th.
Thank you to our parents/guardians, the Parish Team
and our Intermediate teachers, S. Kerr, F. Gabelle,
S.Hamel, L.Marchione, C. Buday, T. Sarwan and S. Pirie
for preparing our students.
Crowning of Mary Celebration
The Big Gulp/Great Big Crunch
On March 22, 2016, the school community participated
in The Big Gulp. Students, simultaneously took a drink
of water from their reusable water bottle to promote
drinking water instead of sugary drinks. As well, on
March 10, 2016, our entire school participated in an
initiative sponsored by Food Share and the Ontario
Ministry to promote healthy living. Each child received an
apple and on a signal all students were invited to crunch
their apples at the same time as over 1/2 million other
Ontario students were crunching theirs. Thanks to
L. Kotis for initiating and organizing these worthwhile
activities!
Catholic School Council
It has been a pleasure to have representatives from the
Rosary Apostolates sharing biblical stories and praying
the rosary with our students from kindergarten to grade
8. On Friday, May 16, 2015 we will be having a
crowning of Mary Celebration in our gym. The primary
and the junior/intermediate celebrations will occur in the
morning. During the celebration, we will be having a
procession, play, recitation of the rosary and the
crowning of Mary. Parents/guardians are welcome to
attend this celebration.
St. Rose of Lima Presents Disney’s

is to promote the vision, values, sacramental life and
Catholic practices of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board and the Catholic community it serves and
to advise the principal and the Board. Future meetings
are scheduled for:
Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 7 pm
Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 7 pm.
Career Day
Students from St. Rose of Lima will be presenting

at St. Mark Elementary School, 3675 Sawmill Valley Dr.,
Mississauga.
During Education Week, we will be having a Career Fair
for our Intermediate students. Representatives from our
community will be sharing time and talent with our
students and providing them with information on future
careers. This exciting day will occur on Wednesday,

EQAO Grade 3 and
Grade 6 Testing
> May 31 - June 2
The EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office)
testing of our Grade 3 and 6 students will take place
from May 31st - June 2nd . Please avoid scheduling
any doctor’s appointments or anything else that
will take your child out of school during these
testing dates. Tests and materials cannot be given
out to parents prior to or during the testing. Previous
media accounts revealed that some parents and children
become anxious about this test. Please try to keep this
testing in perspective for your child. A letter to grade 3
and 6 parents with further information will be sent home
closer to the testing dates.
Safety at St. Rose of Lima
Students are reminded to enter or exit the school yard by
using only the paved walkways on the east or west sides
of the school building. Thank you to all parents who
ensure our students’ safety by not driving in the
school driveway when picking up or dropping off
your children.
Appropriate Dress for Warm Weather
Spring is in the air and with spring comes the warmer
temperatures! Parents and students are reminded of
school guidelines for appropriate attire as the warm
weather approaches. Dressing appropriately for school
promotes a positive learning environment. Tank tops,
halter tops, short shorts, basketball shirts, spandex
bicycle shorts and tops that expose the midriff are
not suitable for school attire. Shirts need to be an
appropriate length without violent or inappropriate
language or pictures. We ask for your continued support
for a dress code which reflects the school as a place for
serious work, accompanied by standards of sensitivity
and respect.

Inclement Weather, School Closures and
Bus Cancellations
During the winter months inclement
weather may cause disruption to bus
transportation and regular school
operations. A decision to cancel
school transportation and/or to close
schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m.
and will be announced on the
following radio stations:
VIRGIN RADIO FM 99.9

The message usually takes the following form, “The
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the
Peel District School Board buses are cancelled.”
This means that buses are cancelled for the entire day.
Or, to indicate school closures, “The schools and
offices of the Peel District School Board and the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been
closed.” Should the announcement refer to cancellation
only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT
affect our school.
Study Hall @ Lima
Study Hall is a school specific initiative led
by staff to provide extra time and an
opportunity for students to work on
homework and assignments. It takes
place Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in
the school library, from 12:35 pm to 1:15 pm. Study Hall
provides a quiet area for students to catch-up, complete,
or to get ahead of homework and assignments. Staff
volunteer to supervise study hall. Thank you to S. Leach,
C. Adebajo and T. McMahon for organizing study hall.
In accordance with the Safe Schools Act, all volunteers,
including those going on one day school trips, must have
a Criminal Reference Check completed by Peel Police.
Criminal Reference Checks are free of charge for
volunteers. Forms are available from the school office.

Parents are requested to provide the teacher with a note
if it is necessary for a child to leave for an appointment.
Please meet the child at the main office and sign him/her
out. On return to school the student must report to the
office and sign back in. Prior arrangements are to be
made with your son or daughter to minimize classroom
disruptions.
School Organization – September 2016
Planning and preparations have begun with respect to
formulating classes and general school organization for
the 2016-2017 school year. Where possible, classes are
organized and balanced on the basis of a variety of
factors. This also includes students in Extended French
and Gifted.
Some of these factors include gender considerations,
academics and social/emotional factors. Parent input is
valued as we recognize that you know your child best. If
you have concerns about your child’s class
placement for September 2016, we ask that you put
your concerns in writing if you think your child
would benefit from a particular teaching style or
learning environment.
Please do not make specific requests for teachers as
staffing is always tentative and changes can and
often do take place between the time of tentative
class placement and September. All requests
should be returned to the school by Friday, April
29th.
Are You Moving?
Next year’s school population has been projected at over
350 students. As planning has begun with respect to
formulating classes and general school organization for
the 2016-2017 school year, please inform the office as
soon as possible if you are planning to move between
now and September, 2016. Also, if you have already
moved and not informed the office of your new address,
please do so immediately as our school records must be
accurate at all times.
Healthy Sleep, Happy Child
Getting a good night’s sleep can help you and your child
be your best at work and play. Here are 5 tips for healthy
sleep for the whole family!
Follow a routine: Go to bed and get up at the same
time each day—even on weekends! Create a regular
nighttime routine—it lets your body know it’s time to go
to sleep. If you have to take a nap, try to make sure it
ends before late afternoon.
Watch what you eat and drink: Avoid caffeine (coffee,
black or green teas, chocolate, pop, etc.)
6-8 hours before bedtime. Don’t go to bed with a
stomach that is too empty or too full—both can interfere
with sleep.
Relax: Listen to relaxing music, read alone or together,
or try relaxation exercises (e.g., muscle relaxation, deep
breathing, and imagery). Take a warm bath 90 minutes
before bedtime. The heat will raise your body
temperature, and when it drops again it will help you feel
sleepy.
Stay Active: Get regular exercise—it improves restful
sleep. But avoid rigorous exercise right before bedtime.
Unplug: Keep the bedroom quiet, dark, and cool.
Electronic devices can interfere with sleep. The light
cues your brain to wake up. Turn devices off at least one
hour before bedtime.

Spring into Spring!
Catholic Education Week (May 1-6, 2016)
Spring is a great time to promote daily physical activity
and explore the environment around us. Students are
encouraged to walk and bike to school as often as
possible. Walking and biking to school is environmentally
friendly and fun! Celebrate Earth Day on Friday,
April 22nd. Take a nature walk/hike through a natural
area or help to organize a cleanup of the school grounds
and surrounding areas. Plant trees and plants native to
your area in your community
Personal Electronic Devices for
Educational Purposes
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board acknowledges the value of the use
of technology for learning. Students are
permitted to register and use personal
electronic devices (PEDs) on board
premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational
purposes, under the direction of staff and only with
parent/guardian permission. Students may register their
PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless
network. Students are required to adhere to the student
“Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network
Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User
Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be
advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board will not be responsible for any cost
incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not
interfere with learning; their use must comply with the
Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and
procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone
calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed
through the main office. Failure to comply with these
guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or
any other consequences deemed necessary by school
administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable
uses of personal electronic devices during schoolsanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose
outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of
PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no
responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices.
Attendance and Punctuality
All students are expected to attend school regularly and
punctually. In the event that your child will be late or
absent, please call the school and follow the prompts to
leave a message. This can be done 24 hours a day.
For students who are absent and for whom a call is not
received, we will attempt to contact the students’
parents.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive
mercy.” – Matthew 5:7
Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to
highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of
Catholic education between our Catholic schools and
local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education
Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of
Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our
Church, and in our society. We invite all members of our
community, to participate in the celebrations and
activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic
Education Week 2016 in our schools.
This year’s five sub-themes, one for each of the five
days of Catholic Education Week, help students to
understand the rich meaning of this year’s theme:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Mercy that Welcomes
Mercy that Loves
Mercy that Forgives
Mercy that Lives the Gospel
Mercy that Rejoices

Fractions
Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth
While whole numbers represent
quantities of whole units, fractions
signify parts of whole units or parts of
sets. Although fractions are all around
us, learning about fractions may be
challenging for some children.
Identifying fractions in our
environment makes them meaningful
and easier to visualize.
What do we mean by “growth mindset”?
Mindsets change is not about picking up a few pointers here
and there. It’s about seeing things in a new way… changing
from a “judge and be-judged” framework to a “learn-and-help
learn” framework.
– Carol S. Dweck
Web Resources:
CLIPS (Critical Learning Instructional Paths
Supports)
Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset:
Tip # 7. Provide Honest, Constructive Criticism That
Emphasizes Growth
 Work with your child to identify strategies for improvement.
 Use phrases like: “Let me add new information to help
you solve this…” or “What parts were difficult for you?
Let’s look at them.”
http://oame.on.ca/CLIPS/
Family Math Activity K – 3:
Big Idea
A fraction shows the relationship
between a part and a whole.
 With your child, gather several similarly shaped
objects, such as a piece of paper, a towel, a
placemat, a picture frame, a magazine and a book.
 Ask your child to show you one half of each object,
perhaps by using a ruler to mark the halfway point.
This is an opportunity for your child to see that
fractional portions must be of equal size.
Extension: Ask your child to show you one fourth of
each object.
Family Math Activity 4-6:
 Ask what real-life situations might these fractions describe:
Two fifths 2/5, Three sixths 3/6, Five eighths 5/8
(e.g. Five eggs have been eaten from the dozen. This represents
5/12 of the set. Can your child describe the fraction of eggs
eaten (5/12) and the remaining eggs (7/12)?)
Grades 7 & 8: Continuing
the Conversation about
Financial Literacy!
Explore Career Possibilities
Talk to your child about:
 What two things do you enjoy most in
life?
o What career possibilities are there
in these two areas?
 What are you best at in terms of your
own abilities?
o Are there career possibilities that
fit with these talents?
