The world bursts with the signs of resurrection; Flowers stir in their winter beds, poking through the last traces of snow. The sun drenches us with its warmth, stirring the hidden and waiting life within the earth, within us. The world awakening reflects the movement of my heart and I am touched in the depths of my spirit. Art work in the power of Your hands, the spirit of drawing life from things both old and new. To be praised are You, Lord for the blessings of spring. B. Arbour Director of Education M. Mazzorato 905-890-1221 Associate Director J. Hrajnik 905-890-1221 Associate Director S. DaSilva School Website: http://www.dpcdsb.org/ RLIMA Administrators’ Message… God has given us many guidelines and examples of how to live our lives. He sent his Son Jesus to make sure that we could see what life could be like. Jesus made one lesson clear above all other lessons—the lesson to love. Love is not about us -it is about forgetting ourselves and looking for the good of the other. That’s what Jesus did - he forgot about himself on purpose. He chose to give up his life for the good of others. Making little sacrifices on purpose so that others will have a bit of food, a bit of shelter, a bit of peace, a bit of quiet, a bit of fun, a bit of friendship. Through prayer and concentration we can get better at showing love to everyone we meet. Your Partner in Education, J. Coughlin Principal P. Basran Vice Principal Learning Together 1 Virtue of the Month: Love God has given us many people in our lives to show us examples of LOVE. Our families, teachers, and friends show us their love every day. Love can be seen in the simplest acts of kindness, such as sharing a pencil, playing a game, or even saying thank-you. We should always show our love for others because love is about seeing the good in people even when they make us angry. Sometimes the greatest acts of love happen when we are angry, such as not hitting our sibling back or not screaming at our friends. Jesus is always with us and we should always try to remember His most important lesson, the lesson of love, because love is not about us-it is about looking out for the good of others. Our Daily Prayer for April: Let us pray for the virtue of love so that we will never be satisfied until all are satisfied. AMEN From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate Expectations, a person with love: † Relates to family intimacy and sexuality as God given gifts, to be used as the creator intended † Relates to family members in a loving, compassionate and respectful manner especially when the other seems 'unlovable' † Respects the rights, responsibilities and contributions of self and others You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:30-31) Welcome to T. Sarwan, who joined St. Rose of Lima’s staff effective, March 21st. T. Sarwan will be teaching the mainstream Grade 7/8 class. She brings a multitude of skills and talents to our school community. As well, on March 10, 2016, our entire school participated in an initiative sponsored by Food Share and the Ontario Ministry to promote healthy living. Each child received an apple and on a signal all students were invited to crunch their apples at the same time as over 1/2 million other Ontario students were crunching theirs. Thanks to L. Kotis for initiating and organizing these worthwhile activities! We ask for your continued support for a dress code which reflects the school as a place for serious work, accompanied by standards of sensitivity and respect. Criminal Reference Check Our twitter account is: @RLimaDPCDSB Inclement Weather, School Closures and Bus Cancellations During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption to bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio stations: VIRGIN RADIO FM 99.9 CFNY FM 102.1 FM Z 103.5 CHIN FM 100.7 EZ ROCK FM 97.3 FM 93.1 CBC 99.1 FM 98.1 FM Q107 AM 640 CFRB AM 1010 AM 1540 CHUM AM 1050 CJCL AM 590 CFTR AM 680 CJBC (FR) AM86CHFI CITYTV CTV and GLOBAL NEWS The message usually takes the following form, “The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board buses are cancelled.” This means that buses are cancelled for the entire day. Or, to indicate school closures, “The schools and offices of the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been closed.” Should the announcement refer to cancellation only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT affect our school. School Organization – September 2016 Planning and preparations have begun with respect to formulating classes and general school organization for the 2016-2017 school year. Where possible, classes are organized and balanced on the basis of a variety of factors. This also includes students in Extended French and Gifted. Some of these factors include gender considerations, academics and social/emotional factors. Parent input is valued as we recognize that you know your child best. If you have concerns about your child’s class placement for September 2016, we ask that you put your concerns in writing if you think your child would benefit from a particular teaching style or learning environment. Please do not make specific requests for teachers as staffing is always tentative and changes can and often do take place between the time of tentative class placement and September. All requests should be returned to the school by Friday, April 29th. Are You Moving? Next year’s school population has been projected at over 350 students. Healthy Sleep, Happy Child Getting a good night’s sleep can help you and your child be your best at work and play. Here are 5 tips for healthy sleep for the whole family! Follow a routine: Go to bed and get up at the same time each day—even on weekends! Create a regular nighttime routine—it lets your body know it’s time to go to sleep. If you have to take a nap, try to make sure it ends before late afternoon. Watch what you eat and drink: Avoid caffeine (coffee, black or green teas, chocolate, pop, etc.) 6-8 hours before bedtime. Don’t go to bed with a stomach that is too empty or too full—both can interfere with sleep. Relax: Listen to relaxing music, read alone or together, or try relaxation exercises (e.g., muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and imagery). Take a warm bath 90 minutes before bedtime. The heat will raise your body temperature, and when it drops again it will help you feel sleepy. Stay Active: Get regular exercise—it improves restful sleep. But avoid rigorous exercise right before bedtime. Unplug: Keep the bedroom quiet, dark, and cool. Electronic devices can interfere with sleep. The light cues your brain to wake up. Turn devices off at least one hour before bedtime. Learning Together 5 Spring into Spring! Catholic Education Week (May 1-6, 2016) Spring is a great time to promote daily physical activity and explore the environment around us. Students are encouraged to walk and bike to school as often as possible. Walking and biking to school is environmentally friendly and fun! Celebrate Earth Day on Friday, April 22nd. Take a nature walk/hike through a natural area or help to organize a cleanup of the school grounds and surrounding areas. Plant trees and plants native to your area in your community Personal Electronic Devices for Educational Purposes The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission. Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the “Network User Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans. PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration. The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during schoolsanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas. Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices. Attendance and Punctuality All students are expected to attend school regularly and punctually. In the event that your child will be late or absent, please call the school and follow the prompts to leave a message. This can be done 24 hours a day. For students who are absent and for whom a call is not received, we will attempt to contact the students’ parents. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” – Matthew 5:7 Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our Church, and in our society. We invite all members of our community, to participate in the celebrations and activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic Education Week 2016 in our schools. This year’s five sub-themes, one for each of the five days of Catholic Education Week, help students to understand the rich meaning of this year’s theme: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Although fractions are all around us, learning about fractions may be challenging for some children. Identifying fractions in our environment makes them meaningful and easier to visualize. What do we mean by “growth mindset”? Mindsets change is not about picking up a few pointers here and there. It’s about seeing things in a new way… changing from a “judge and be-judged” framework to a “learn-and-help learn” framework. – Carol S. Dweck Web Resources: CLIPS (Critical Learning Instructional Paths Supports) Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset: Tip # 7. Provide Honest, Constructive Criticism That Emphasizes Growth Work with your child to identify strategies for improvement. Use phrases like: “Let me add new information to help you solve this…” or “What parts were difficult for you? Let’s look at them.” http://oame.on.ca/CLIPS/ Family Math Activity K – 3: Big Idea A fraction shows the relationship between a part and a whole. With your child, gather several similarly shaped objects, such as a piece of paper, a towel, a placemat, a picture frame, a magazine and a book. Ask your child to show you one half of each object, perhaps by using a ruler to mark the halfway point. This is an opportunity for your child to see that fractional portions must be of equal size. Extension: Ask your child to show you one fourth of each object. Family Math Activity 4-6: Ask what real-life situations might these fractions describe: Two fifths 2/5, Three sixths 3/6, Five eighths 5/8 (e.g. Five eggs have been eaten from the dozen. This represents 5/12 of the set. Can your child describe the fraction of eggs eaten (5/12) and the remaining eggs (7/12)?) Grades 7 & 8: Continuing the Conversation about Financial Literacy! What are you best at in terms of your own abilities? o Are there career possibilities that fit with these talents?
