We all deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness which are different ways of saying respect. At St. Rose of Lima we have a school environment where respect servers as the foundation for all that we do. Students treat their peers with kindness and consideration. Love and respect are central to all of our interactions. In this year of Mercy, we would like to thank all members of the school community for their continued support. Together, we can continue to make St. Rose of Lima a dynamic, caring and loving school community. Your Partners in Education, J. Coughlin and P. Basran Learning Together Your continued support allows St. Rose of Lima to be a faith filled and dynamic school. 1 Virtue of the Month: Respect For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. (1 Cor 9:19) We are all desperate to be treated respectfully by others. However, in order to be respected we also have to respect ourselves. Everyone has a right to go to school/work free of gossip, name calling, and put-downs. We should expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus. Our Daily Prayer for February: Let us pray for the virtue of respect so that we meet will feel like we are their brother or sister in Christ. During our six week Lenten journey we recognize and discuss with our students our human frailties which causes us to sin. We prepare for the coming of Easter through reflection, prayer and charity. We respond to Jesus’ call for a “change of heart” by becoming stronger in our will to say ‘yes’ to God and ‘no’ to our selfishness. We look forward to our Lenten journey together, a strengthened and renewed faith in God’s will. We are pleased to forward our school newsletter electronically to those who have signed up for this option. It is not too late for other interested families to sign up for this. Think Green option. Forms are available at the office to request this method of receiving the newsletter. EQAO Grade 3 and Grade 6 Testing > May 25 - June 8 The EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) testing of our Grade 3 and 6 students will take place from May 26 - June 5. Please avoid scheduling any doctor’s appointments or anything else that will take your child out of school during these testing dates. Tests and materials cannot be given out to parents prior to or during the testing. Previous media accounts revealed that some parents and children become anxious about this test. Please try to keep this testing in perspective for your child. A letter to grade 3 and 6 parents with further information will be sent home closer to the testing dates. Cold Weather - Outdoor Play The winter season is upon us. Please ensure that your child comes to school prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. All children should have hats, scarves, gloves, warm coats and boots, labeled with their names. In colder weather we often receive requests to allow children to remain indoors, when students have a cold, flu etc. Please note that we cannot comply, as we have neither the facilities, nor the staff to supervise these students. If you feel your child is not well enough to go outside, it would be best for you to keep your child home. Please be advised that students are kept indoors at recess during the winter months only when the weather conditions are extremely cold. (When the wind chill equivalent temperature is minus 25 degrees Celsius or lower, as per school Board policy). We obtain our weather information from the Environment Canada Weather Information Line. With the exception of these occasions, all children will go out for recesses and the lunch break. We would appreciate your support in reinforcing the school rule that all snow stays on the ground. For everyone’s safety we do not allow snowballs, kicking snow, or any other snow\ice activity that could lead to potential harm or injury. We also ask that your child have a pair of indoor shoes for classroom use, labeled with their name for easy identification and a pair of outdoor shoes in order to maintain a clean environment and permit students to be prepared in case of unexpected evacuations. Your help with this is appreciated. Safety at St. Rose of Lima Students are reminded to enter or exit the school yard by using only the paved walkways on the east or west sides of the school building. Thank you to all parents who ensure our students’ safety by not driving in the school driveway when picking up or dropping off your children. “Learning Together” 4 2015-16 School Year Calendar Additional Professional Activity Day: Monday, April 11, 2016 Terms of the recent contract settlement between the teacher federations and the Ministry of Education included the provision of an additional Professional Activity Day for the 2015-2016 school year for both elementary and secondary schools.
