Friendship Prayer
Help me, O God, to be a good and true friend.
To be always loyal, and never to let my friends down;
Never to talk about them behind their backs in a way in which I
Would not do before their faces;
Never to betray a confidence or talk about the things about which
I ought to be silent;
Always to be ready to share everything I have;
To be as true to my friends as I would wish them to be to me.
This I ask of you who are
The greatest and the truest of all friends.

Administrators’ Message…
As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all
deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness which are
different ways of saying respect.
At St. Rose of Lima we have a school environment where respect servers as the
foundation for all that we do. Students treat their peers with kindness and
consideration. Love and respect are central to all of our interactions.
In this year of Mercy, we would like to thank all members of the school community for
their continued support. Together, we can continue to make St. Rose of Lima a
dynamic, caring and loving school community.
Your Partners in Education,
J. Coughlin and P. Basran
Learning Together
Your continued support allows St. Rose of Lima to be a faith filled and dynamic school.
1
Virtue of the Month:
Respect
For though I am free with
respect to all, I have made
myself a slave to all, so that I
might win more of them.
(1 Cor 9:19)
We are all desperate to be treated respectfully by others.
However, in order to be respected we also have to
respect ourselves. Everyone has a right to go to
school/work free of gossip, name calling, and put-downs.
We should expect to be treated with respect by everyone
we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus.
Our Daily Prayer for February:
Let us pray for the virtue of respect
so that we meet will feel like we are their brother or sister
in Christ.
AMEN

Distinctive expectations for graduates
of Catholic schools are determined
and shaped by the vision and destiny
of the human person emerging from
our faith tradition. Catholic education
views human life as an integration of
body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this
vision, Catholic education fosters the
search for knowledge as a lifelong
spiritual and academic quest.
The Graduate is expected to be:

community who celebrates the signs and sacred
mystery of God's presence through word, sacrament,
prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and
listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in
light of gospel values.
3. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who
solves problems and makes responsible decisions with
an informed moral conscience for the common good.
4. A self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner who
develops and demonstrates their God-given potential.
5. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning,
dignity and vocation in work which respects the rights of
all and contributes to the common good.
6. A caring family member who attends to family,
school, parish, and the wider community.

Redeemer Parish on Saturday, February 20th at 7pm.

Lenten Season
Our Liturgical Season of Lent
begins with our Ash Wednesday
Service on February 10 at 2:00 pm
Thank you to Ms. DeOliveria and
Ms. Rodrigues for organizing the prayer
service. During our six week
Lenten journey we recognize and discuss with our
students our human frailties which causes us to sin. We
prepare for the coming of Easter through reflection,
prayer and charity. We respond to Jesus’ call for a
“change of heart” by becoming stronger in our will to say
‘yes’ to God and ‘no’ to our selfishness. We look forward
to our Lenten journey together, a strengthened and
renewed faith in God’s will.
A reminder to all parents that
Monday, February 15, 2016 is
Family Day, and there will be no
school on this day.

late for other interested families to sign up for this. Think

EQAO Grade 3 and
Grade 6 Testing
> May 25 - June 8
The EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office)
testing of our Grade 3 and 6 students will take place
from May 26 - June 5. Please avoid scheduling any
doctor’s appointments or anything else that will
take your child out of school during these
testing dates. Tests and materials cannot be given
out to parents prior to or during the testing. Previous
media accounts revealed that some parents and children
become anxious about this test. Please try to keep this
testing in perspective for your child. A letter to grade 3
and 6 parents with further information will be sent home
closer to the testing dates.
Cold Weather - Outdoor Play
The winter season is upon us. Please
ensure that your child comes to school
prepared to participate in all activities,
including outdoor recess. All children
should have hats, scarves, gloves,
warm coats and boots, labeled with
their names.
In colder weather we often receive requests to allow
children to remain indoors, when students have a cold,
flu etc. Please note that we cannot comply, as we have
neither the facilities, nor the staff to supervise these
students. If you feel your child is not well enough to go
outside, it would be best for you to keep your child
home.
Please be advised that students are kept indoors at
recess during the winter months only when the weather
conditions are extremely cold. (When the wind chill
equivalent temperature is minus 25 degrees Celsius or
lower, as per school Board policy). We obtain our
weather information from the Environment Canada
Weather Information Line. With the exception of these
occasions, all children will go out for recesses and the
lunch break.
We would appreciate your support in reinforcing the
school rule that all snow stays on the ground. For
everyone’s safety we do not allow snowballs, kicking
snow, or any other snow\ice activity that could lead to
potential harm or injury.
We also ask that your child have a pair of indoor shoes
for classroom use, labeled with their name for easy
identification and a pair of outdoor shoes in order to
maintain a clean environment and permit students to be
prepared in case of unexpected evacuations. Your help
with this is appreciated.
Safety at St. Rose of Lima
Students are reminded to enter or exit the school yard by
using only the paved walkways on the east or west sides
of the school building.
Thank you to all parents who ensure our students’
safety by not driving in the school driveway when
picking up or dropping off your children.

Inclement Weather, School Closures and
Bus Cancellations
During the winter months inclement
weather may cause disruption to bus
transportation and regular school
operations. A decision to cancel
school transportation and/or to close
schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m.
and will be announced on the
following radio stations:
VIRGIN RADIO FM 99.9
CFNY FM 102.1
FM Z 103.5
CHIN FM 100.7
EZ ROCK FM 97.3
FM 93.1
CBC 99.1
FM 98.1
FM Q107
This means that buses are cancelled for the entire day.
Or, to indicate school closures, “The schools and
offices of the Peel District School Board and the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been
closed.” Should the announcement refer to cancellation
only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT
affect our school.

Appointments
Parents are requested to provide the teacher with a note
if it is necessary for a child to leave for an appointment.
Please meet the child at the main office and sign him/her
out. On return to school the student must report to the
office and sign back in. Prior arrangements are to be
made with your son or daughter to minimize classroom
disruptions.
The message usually takes the following form, “The
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the

Educational Purposes
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board acknowledges the value of the use
of technology for learning. Students are
permitted to register and use personal
electronic devices (PEDs) on board
premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational
purposes, under the direction of staff and only with

PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless
network. Students are required to adhere to the student
“Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network

Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be
advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board will not be responsible for any cost
incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not
interfere with learning; their use must comply with the
Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies and
procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone
calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed
through the main office. Failure to comply with these
guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or
any other consequences deemed necessary by school
administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable
uses of personal electronic devices during schoolsanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose
outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of

Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth
What do we mean by “growth mindset”?
Growth mindset is a belief system that suggests that one’s
intelligence can be grown or developed with persistence,
effort and a focus on learning.

Let’s discuss how “Advertising” affects our
money decisions…
Discuss with your child which of the following
advertising techniques do you think is the most
effective at influencing your opinion about a
product or service?
1. Repetition – repeating their message over
and over again in an ad or a series of ads
over time. (eg: “I’m lovin’ it”, “Just do it!”)
2. Conformity – aims to have you “get on
board”, be “in” and “get with it”.
3. Imitation – using a celebrity associated
with the goods or service. The advertiser
hopes that those who like and respect the
celebrity will imitate the behaviour by
using the product.
