Administrators’ Message…
We would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We hope you had a restful holiday
season with your family and friends. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all
of the students, staff, parents and gaurdians for the generosity, enthusiasm and acts of
kindness that allowed St. Rose of Lima’s many Advent and Christmas activities to be
so successful.
As God’s children we greet the new year with love, faith and hope. This is a time for
rebirth, new beginnings and the celebration of diversity, a time we can see with our
eyes and hearts, just as God sees His children and the world.
We begin the New Year by celebrating the virtue of “Self Control” and are reminded
that a person with self-control:
Is patient
Knows how to wait his/her turn
Can calm himself/herself down and think before reacting to situations
Knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing, fighting, etc.)
Can think things through and do what is best for everyone
In this year of Mercy, may God grant you many blessings for a wonderful, safe, healthy
and prosperous year!
Your Partners in Education,
J. Coughlin & P. Basran

Virtue of the Month: Self-Control
God wants us to do what we know
and feel is right. Self-control helps us
to resist the temptation to do
something that we will regret. It also
helps us to resist the temptation to do
something that will harm ourselves or others. Each time
you exercise self-control you grow stronger in the Lord
and invite peace to settle over life as you avoid any guilt
you may feel from having made a poor decision.
Like a city breached, without walls,
is one who lacks self-control.
(Prov. 25:28)
From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate
Expectations, a person with self-control…
†
†
Distinctive expectations for graduates
of Catholic schools are determined
and shaped by the vision and destiny
of the human person emerging from
our faith tradition. Catholic education
views human life as an integration of
body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this
vision, Catholic education fosters the
search for knowledge as a lifelong
spiritual and academic quest.
The Graduate is expected to be:
Our Daily Prayer for January:
Let us pray for the virtue of self-control
so that we will resist the temptation to
cause harm to ourselves or to others around us.
AMEN

St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Project
Safety at St. Rose of Lima
We would like to thank members of our school
community for their generosity. We raised over $2,000
towards the purchase of gift cards for the St. Vincent de
Paul. Thank you to S. Hamel, C. Adebajo and
M. DiMauro for their leadership on this important
initiative.
Students are reminded to enter or exit the school yard by
using only the paved walkways on the east or west sides
of the school building.
Thank you to all parents who ensure our students’
safety by not driving in the school driveway when
picking up or dropping off your children.
Think Green Newsletter
Inclement Weather, School Closures and
Bus Cancellations
Thank you to all parents who have responded to our
invitation to receive the newsletter electronically. We are
pleased to forward our school newsletter electronically to
those who have signed up for this option. It is not too
late for other interested families to sign up for this. Think
Green option. Forms are available at the office to
request this method of receiving the newsletter.
Cold Weather - Outdoor Play
The winter season is upon us. Please
ensure that your child comes to school
prepared to participate in all activities,
including outdoor recess. All children
should have hats, scarves, gloves,
warm coats and boots, labeled with
their names.
In colder weather we often receive requests to allow
children to remain indoors, when students have a cold,
flu etc. Please note that we cannot comply, as we have
neither the facilities, nor the staff to supervise these
students. If you feel your child is not well enough to go
outside, it would be best for you to keep your child
home.
Please be advised that students are kept indoors at
recess during the winter months only when the weather
conditions are extremely cold. (When the wind chill
equivalent temperature is minus 25 degrees Celsius or
lower, as per school Board policy). We obtain our
weather information from the Environment Canada
Weather Information Line. With the exception of these
occasions, all children will go out for recesses and the
lunch break.
We would appreciate your support in reinforcing the
school rule that all snow stays on the ground. For
everyone’s safety we do not allow snowballs, kicking
snow, or any other snow\ice activity that could lead to
potential harm or injury.
We also ask that your child have a pair of indoor shoes
for classroom use, labeled with their name for easy
identification and a pair of outdoor shoes in order to
maintain a clean environment and permit students to be
prepared in case of unexpected evacuations. Your help
with this is appreciated.
During the winter months inclement
weather may cause disruption to bus
transportation and regular school
operations. A decision to cancel
school transportation and/or to close
schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m.
and will be announced on the
following radio stations:

The message usually takes the following form, “The
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the
Peel District School Board buses are cancelled.” This
means that buses are cancelled for the entire day.
Or, to indicate school closures, “The schools and
offices of the Peel District School Board and the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been
closed.” Should the announcement refer to cancellation
only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT
affect our school.
Study Hall @ Lima
Study Hall is a school specific initiative led
by staff to provide extra time and an
opportunity for students to work on
homework and assignments. It takes
place Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in
the school library, from 12:35 pm to 1:15 pm. Study Hall
provides a quiet area for students to catch-up, complete,
or to get ahead of homework and assignments. Staff
volunteer to supervise study hall. Thank you to S. Leach,
C. Adebajo and T. McMahon for organizing study hall.

Board acknowledges the value of the use
of technology for learning. Students are
permitted to register and use personal
electronic devices (PEDs) on board
premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational
purposes, under the direction of staff and only with
parent/guardian permission. Students may register their
PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless
network. Students are required to adhere to the student

Measurement
Measurement concepts and
skills are directly applicable
to the world in which we live.
People with measurement
sense have an understanding
of the “howmuchness”.
Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth
New
What do we mean by “growth mindset”?
Growth mindset is a belief system that suggests that
one’s intelligence can be grown or developed with
persistence, effort and a focus on learning.
- Mary Cay Ricci
Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset:
Tip # 4. Be Mindful of the Goals You Set For Your Children and the
Messages They Send
Web Resources:
http://pbskids.org/games/math/
 Work with your child to set goals that are reasonable and
desirable for both of you.
 All goals should emphasize growth – the development of
a skill or the expanding knowledge.
Family Math Activities K-3
A measurement is a
comparison of one object
Big Bi
Ideas
with another.
 What can find in your home that is about as
long as your arm?
 Find 3 things that weigh less than a shoe
(e.g., adult shoe, sandal, child’s shoe)
Measurement from 4-6
Big Idea: The same object can be described by
using different measurements.
 What objects can you find that are big in
one way but small in another way. (eg:
A very tall, very thin cylinder could be
considered big in terms of height but
small in terms of width.)
Grades 7 & 8: Continuing
the Conversation about
Financial Literacy
Let’s discuss “Money in the News”…
 Have your child monitor the news
in all its forms (t.v., on-line…) to
identify stories about money.
 Talk with your child about some of
the stories or items they have heard
about in the news (e.g., how could
this ‘news story’ impact our
community and/or family
financially?)
