NOVEMBER 2015
NEWSLETTER
DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Remembrance
Lord our God, at this time of remembrance,
we entrust all our prayers and needs to your infinite mercy.
Help us to become ever more mindful of the
bonds that unite us as a human family despite
our differences.
Heal our inner wounds and outward divisions,
that one day our world might live in your true
and lasting peace.
Amen
Dear Parent/Guardian,
This month is a unique time of prayer, reflection and remembrance as we concentrate on the virtue of conscience. We renew our belief in the afterlife and
reflect on our mission to follow Jesus in love, service and intercession. We pay
tribute to the saints on All Saints Day and follow with prayer for the dearly departed on All Souls’ Day. November offers us the opportunity to reflect and to
pay tribute to the brave men and women who sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their lives for peace, justice and freedom. We also remember in our prayers the victims of injustice and oppression. Let us pray together for justice and
peace, beginning in our hearts, homes and throughout the world.
May God bless us and guide our community in faith, empathy and conscience.
Sincerely,
J. Coughlin/P. Basran
Personal Electronic Devices on Board Premises and/or Board Sanctioned Events for Educational Purposes
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning.
Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board
sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission.
Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network. Students are required
to adhere to the student “Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the
“Network User Application and Agreement.” (GF066) Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code
of Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will
continue to be directed through the main office. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED
privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration.
The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned
activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.
Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for
lost, damaged or stolen devices.

Going Green
St. Rose of Lima, currently a Silver level Eco
school, continues to participate in the Ministry
ECO School program again this year, and we
will be considering ways to make our school
greener. Our weekly recycling is a part of this
program and as such we are asking parents to
begin preparing for litterless lunches. We will
continue to ask students to volunteer to monitor classroom blue boxes. The teachers and
students, who make up our school Eco-team,
will begin to meet regularly to develop and implement strategies to help St. Rose of Lima become even better.
Parents are reminded that students must travel to and from
school on their assigned buses and use their assigned stops. For
safety and insurance reasons students do not have permission to
travel on a friend’s bus or get off at a friend’s stop even with a
note.
Bus Cancellations / School Closures
A decision to cancel school transportation, and/or to close
schools, due to inclement weather conditions is usually made by
6:30 a.m.

Entry and Exit Procedures at St Rose
Staying in For Recess
It is a parking violation to block neighborhood driveways when picking up and
dropping off students at school. The Parking Authority is prepared to ticket cars
that violate this regulation.
Also parents are reminded that students
can not be at school before 9:00 a.m. unless they are part of a teacher supervised
team or extra curricular event. We do
not have supervision before 9:00 a.m. for
students arriving early and the office staff
is not able to provide supervision.
Colder weather is here again! Please ensure that your child comes to
school prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess.
All children should have hats, scarves, gloves, warm coats and boots,
labeled with their names. In colder weather we often receive requests
to allow children to remain indoors, when students have a cold, flu etc.
Please note that we cannot comply, as we have neither the facilities, nor
the staff to supervise these students. If you feel your child is not well
enough to go outside, it would be best for you to keep your child home.
On extremely cold days, we limit the amount of time that students
spend out of doors. We obtain our weather information from the Environment Canada Weather Information Line and follow board guidelines.
With the exception of these occasions, all children will go out for recesses and the lunch break.
Cross Country
On October 9, 2015 60 students represented St. Rose of Lima at the Family Cross Country
meet at Erindale Park. Congratulations to all students for challenging themselves and running their
best. Students from junior and intermediate attended the Board Cross Country on October 26, 2015.
Once again, our students braved the cold and finished the race with pride. A big thanks to C. Buday,
J. Anzelc, F. deOliveira and L. Kotis.
Volleyball
Congratulations to the Junior Girls’ and Boys’ Volleyball teams for their hard work and fine
sportsmanship!
Special thanks to our coaches:
F. Gabelle and M. DiMauro for volunteering their time and talent for practices and games! Junior Girls

Virtues
As a Catholic community, we are called to learn and to grow and to become
more like Jesus in the way we see and treat others. Our Catholic faith plays
an important role in helping us shape schools that are safe caring and inclusive. Catholic school education provides us with the opportunity to integrate virtues formation into all areas of our school life within the context of
our faith. This “Virtues Program” will help us to nurture virtue and character development in the lives of our students. Each month is dedicated to a
particular virtue:
September—Faith
October—Empathy
November—Conscience
December—Hope

January—Self-Control
February—Respect

As Catholics, taking a leadership role is important. The Youth Faith Ambassadors demonstrate this with the work that they do in the school on a regular basis.
This is a group of grade 5-8 students who will be getting involved in Social
Justice activities and leadership roles in the school such as the Christmas
Basket Drive and the Easter food drive.
Thank you from the Youth Faith Ambassadors, M. Di Mauro and
C. Adebajo.

A big Thank You to all for your generous donations to

Advent
As Catholics, we prepare to celebrate the season of Advent. The Advent wreath is a circular garland of
evergreen branches representing
eternity. On that wreath, four candles
(three purple and one pink) are typically arranged.
During the season of Advent one candle on the
wreath is lit each Sunday as a part of the Advent services. Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

First Sunday of Advent-purple candle representing
Hope in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

Second Sunday of Advent-purple candle representing Love symbolizing Christ's manger.

This month’s Virtue, Conscience
God has given us the ability to discern right from wrong and make decisions and choices that reflect our Catholic beliefs and values. We trust that the common Spirit we
share inspires us and guides us to make good decisions as we pray for God’s guidance
in following his commandments. A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture to
influence him/her.
Elementary Progress Reports
Elementary Progress Reports will be sent home on November 17, 2015.
The Elementary Progress Report is designed to show a student’s development of learning
skills and work habits during the fall of this year, as well as a student’s general progress
in working towards the achievements of curriculum expectations n all subjects.
Please be aware, that the Progress Report is not a formal Report Card. Students will not
be receiving letter grades indicating achievement of overall expectations.

Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring
that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units.
A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the
year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person
through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can
start as early as October.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the
various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their websites. As always,
children who are unwell, should be kept at home.
Flu Clinics
Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics.
