APPLYING TO COLLEGE www.ontariocolleges.ca 1. Visit the website www.ontariocolleges.ca and browse through the information - Choose “APPLYING ” at the top - read the information on the screen “How to Apply, Important Dates, Application Fees, Highly Competitive Programs, Admission Requirements and Offers of Admission”. 2. Attend the college fair on Mon Oct. 19 2015 5-9pm or Tues. Oct. 20 2015 10-3pm in Toronto (Enercare Building at the Exhibition Hall B) See www.ocif.ca for more information) At this fair you will get the course calendar books for all the colleges and be able to ask the reps questions (-we will not be getting enough course calendars for everyone, just reference copies) 3. Read over the course calendars carefully paying attention to prerequisites and portfolio requirements also at “ontariocolleges.ca” look at the “Highly Competitive Programs” on the page “HOW TO APPLY” – there is a chart that will tell you if your program is competitive and some averages You can also look at school in MyBluePrint or at www.ontariocolleges.ca – “Programs” 4. Take campus tours/attend open houses - look at the guidance bulletin board or college website for open house dates Visiting the colleges allows you to ask questions about the program and to look at the facilities. It also allows you to ask questions like How many people get in, averages, what they may be looking for in portfolios etc.. 5.Select 5 programs/schools – you can select up to 5 programs with no more than 3 program choices at any one college >> list your choices in order of preference - write down the course code and the campus (eg. Humber College has 3 campuses – Orangeville, North and Lakeshore campuses) - fill in the chart provided with this handout 5. Talk to your guidance counselor about your career goals October to January – Applying to College You can start applying to college in the middle of October 1. Have your choices of schools and programs chosen and your student number and OEN with you before applying (you will need your credit summary sheet for these numbers) 2. Go to www.ontariocolleges.ca Choose “APPLY” on the top right and Sign Up creating a username and password – write these passwords down on this handout for future reference. 3. When filling out the section “Education” choose Robert F. Hall from the popdown – don’t type in Robert Hall also choose Caledon from the popdown don’t type Caledon East 4. You will get an application number after you apply – write down this number - Print off a copy of your application and put it into your college folder 5. A $95 fee must accompany the application form or it does not get processed 6. You may have to attend an audition, information session or hand in a portfolio – be aware of these dates The deadline for applying is February 1st 2016 for programs starting in Sept. 2015. After February 1st, applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please apply by Christmas holidays -you can make changes up to February 1st 2016 - Transcripts – the guidance office will submit your transcript to Ontariocolleges.ca for you (you do not need to tell guidance to send your transcript, we send all potential graduates’ marks to ontariocolleges application centre after each report card) February to June – After Applying Start looking at scholarship/bursaries –check RFHall’s website under guidance for scholarship websites - Check studentawards.com and ScholarshipsCanada.com and guidance scholarship binder Ensure your email account is not full and is working – email is the primary mode of communication between the colleges and applicants After you receive your report cards, log into your account to verify your grades. Notify your guidance counsellor of any necessary corrections. Check first semester final marks, second semester mid-term marks and second semester final marks. If you make changes to your second semester courses let your counsellor know so your application can be changed. If you are taking a night school course or alt –ed course make sure your these courses are on your application, if not, tell your counsellor You have 5 days after your mid-term to drop a course so it does not appear on your transcript. March to May – Offers of Admission You must accept your offer at www.ontariocolleges.ca You must accept an offer by May 1st, 2016 (some colleges may ask you to accept by a different date You may accept one offer at a time. However, if you change your mind or receive another offer that you prefer, you may change your acceptance as long as the offer has not expired. Your current acceptance will automatically cancel your previous acceptance. You may only confirm an offer once per day. If you already confirmed an offer and change your mind later that day, you must wait until the next business day to confirm the new offer. - Once you accept an offer you will get information on residence, course fees etc…. Make sure you read the information and pay by the deadlines (usually mid June ) If you are applying for OSAP (Ontario student assistance program) - See the website www.osap.gov.on.ca (OSAP is available at the end of May –June) - You must have accepted a school before applying No offers of Admission Go back to www. Ontariocolleges.ca for available programs - If a program says waitlisted or full don’t apply if it says open you can change your application and apply (also call the college and let them know you have applied) If you are taking a summer school course – you must let the college know you are taking a course and you must take your copy of your report card to the college to show them you have completed or upgraded ****** All volunteer hours should be completed by second semester mid-term marks, so when the marks are downloaded to ontariocolleges application centre it shows you are finished and have the diploma requirement***** REMEMBER: 1. College Fair Mon. Oct. 19 or Tues. Oct 20, 2015 2. Deadline to apply is Feb. 1st 2016 – to be considered for the first round of offers - you can apply up to Sept. 2016 if the program is still open 3. Must confirm by May 1st 2016or the date given by the college (you will lose an offer if you are late confirming) 4. Residence and tuition deposits will be due in June- earliest tuition due date is June 15th 5.
