Message
I would imagine all of us are looking forward to the promise of
spring’s light and warmth after what has been a harsh and cold winter. Our school has filled those long cold snowy days with a myriad
of activities from snowboarding trips to successes at Skills Canada.
Students have earned strong results on their first semester courses,
and as this edition of the Heartbeat goes to print, will be focussing
their efforts on upcoming midterm marks. Our grade tens have just
completed the OSSLT, and I am very grateful to the team of teachers
under the leadership of Ms. Bentivoglio who worked so hard to prepare our students to write this high stakes test successfully.
Countless hours above and beyond
the requirements of a job are given
by this staff to ensure the academics,
athletics, and extra curricular activities
available to our students are opportunities of excellence. I am also very
grateful to Anne Brisbois-Abbot who
has taken on the role of chaplaincy
team leader while Brian Finamore is
on leave. Anne brings the spiritual
gentleness and warmth to this position,
that is so much the hallmark of Brian,
and I know she will lead our school
with great faith. She joins our staff as
we begin our journey through Lent.
Father Phil celebrated a beautiful Ash
Wednesday Mass with Father Noel for
our school. I am always so humbled
by the reverence and respect our
students show when we gather to celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass. Their
faith is a sign of grace I am privileged
to witness as the principal. As we look
forward to the warmth and light of
spring, and the joy that Easter bestows
upon each of us, I continue to pray
for God’s blessing on the students and
community of St. Paul, and find much
comfort in knowing your prayers are
being offered for our students as well.
We are truly blessed to be able to learn
in a Catholic school!

Our
Living
Faith
We are journeying together through the last days of Lent as we prepare
for the death and Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our
faith story does not end at the base of the cross as we are people of the
Resurrection.
The school will hold this semester’s our Grade 9 and 10 Religion Class
Retreats after Easter into the month of May. The theme for the Grade 9
Retreat is Belonging and the theme for the grade 10 Retreat is Stewardship of our Planet. These grade retreats with be held at St. Dominic’s
Parish Hall.
The Grade 12 Retreats will be
held at Fogolar’s in Oakville on
May 1, 13 and 15 by Religion
class. The theme is Celebrating our Grade 12 Year and
Bridge to Tomorrow.
We will join together as a
school community for Mass
at St. Dominic Church on
Wednesday, May 7 to celebrate Catholic Education
Week. The theme for this
year’s Catholic Education
Week is Serving in the Love of
Christ.
May we continue to be grace
one another with love, respect
and fellowship over the remaining months of the school
year.

Arts & Non-Profit High Skills Majors
Infograhically
Edutaining
On Thursday, March 27
students from both
Mr. Sayewich’s Arts
and Culture and Mrs.
Premiere’s Non Profit
SHSM’s attended another Digital Media
Day hosted by the
University of Waterloo
at the Stratford Ontario campus.
Students learned advanced fundamentals
of graphic creation
through the design
and deployment of
Infographics.
Using Adobe Illustrator, they were trained
on how to convey a
message with visuals and text. Students
were provided a selection of very specific
topics that they had a
very finite time to
research and then create. The process had
students gain a better understanding of the
power of visuals and how these can direct
different levels of comprehension through
selections of colour, typeface, image size,
image structure and composition balance.
In addition to learning these skills, students also were challenged to visualize,
conceptualize and comprehend how the
size of their created graphics on screen is
not always what it actually appears to be.
Students had to create their Infographics so that they could be presented on the
Stratford Campus’ 3 story tall video wall.
This piece of technology installed by digital projector manufacturer Christie, who
is best know for the projectors that they
have installed at
every movie theatre
in North America.
This one-of-a-kind
digital wonder, with
over 60 tiles measuring measuring a
total combined size
25 feet wide by 3
stories tall with over
60 million pixels in
capacity, was used to show every student’s
created work to a larger than life, full size.
Students presented their Infographic to
faculty staff, other students and teachers attending the session,
explaining their reasons
for their design decisions.
It was a very eye opening session for everyone
as it not only reenforced
that the “message is the
medium, and the medium
is truly a large part of the
message.” (phrase coined
by Marshall McLuhan.,
University of Toronto)

Classical Theatre
Project
The final visit of the year to Stratford
will occur on May 14. Over 40 Grade
12 students of St. Paul will see the
acclaimed play King Lear, Shakespeare’s great tragedy.
Mr. Kay has managed to
organize a trip to see the
Classical Theatre’s production of Romeo and Juliet on
Shakespeare’s birthday, April
23.
The plot: An aging monarch resolves
to divide his kingdom among his three

the audience’s imagination. Featuring
a full musical score created live on
stage, this vivid production captures
the youthful passion and ultimate
tragedy of Shakespeare’s timeless
romance.

daughters, with consequences he little
expects. His reason shattered in the
storm of violent emotion that ensues,
with his very life hanging in the balance, Lear loses everything that has
defined him as a king – and thereby
discovers the essence of his own
humanity.
Starring the great Colm Feore, this is a
not-to-miss opportunity for the Grade
12 students of Mrs. Bentivoglio and
Mr. Kay.
On April 30, the students of Ms.Tobin
and Ms. Alilovic will attend a performance of Macbeth, a production of the
Classical Theatre Project.
In this brand new production, director Charles Roy examines Macbeth
through the lens of modern military
regimes.
In Macbeth, so much is left unsaid. Is
Lady Macbeth evil? Are Macbeth’s visions real (engineered by the witches)
or is he hallucinating?

Arts & Culture Tie-in
Two members from the grade 11 Arts and
Culture SHSM made up the team that was
entered into the 2D animation event at the
DP Catholic Skills Competition. Joshua
Medeiros and Adrian Lazaro entered into
the competition as the only ones using
Toon Boom Animation software.
Toon Boom Animation is the software of
choice for professional animators working on cartoons and animated features that
we watch today. Josh and Adrian used
equipment supplied by St. Paul as no other
secondary school is using this software.
Soft Skills
Congratulations to Emma Kendrick and Eric Lee for their medal winning performances
at DP Skills 2014.
Emma Kendrick delivered a prepared speech on the value of experiential learning. Her
speech earned her a gold medal and she will advance to the provincial competition in
May.
Eric Lee received a silver medal for his presentation on workplace safety and received
much praise from his judges for his delivery and project board. Well done, Emma and
Eric.
As this was their first year ever using this
software, they came into the competition
with a bit of a disadvantage as other competitors have been using Adobe Flash - a
multimedia software title most have been
using since grade 9. Josh and Adrian were
able to excel in their animation design
and deployment and win a bronze medal
against 8 other schools competing.

Planning For Independence
Strikes and Spares!
Our Planning for Independence Program participated in this year’s ROPSSAA Special Events
Bowling Competition on January 23. St. Paul, along with a number of schools across the
Region of Peel, competed in a 10 pin bowling match and also got a chance to meet students
from other schools. It was an eventful, high energy day and St. Paul’s Planning for Independence Program students worked hard as a team to bowl a great game.
Showing Skills!
On Wednesday March 19, Samantha Jones, represented our Planning for Independence Program at the Skilled Trades and Technological Competition held at Philip Pocock S.S.
Samantha competed in the Formal Table Setting event, being judged on items such as appropriate dress/personal appearance, pleasant professional manner, correct placement of 18
mandatory items and timing. Samantha rose to the challenge, practicing daily in the weeks
leading up to the competition and was very proud of her performance at the event.
Congratulations Samantha for believing in yourself and giving it your all.
