Sayewich Principal’sMessage It struck me as I was listening to the second reading on Pentecost Sunday, that I have witnessed what Saint Paul did when he writes of the varieties of gifts and services people have in serving the Lord. In our school this year I have witnessed the generous sharing of talents and gifts by our students and staff in trying to enhance the common good of which Saint Paul writes. I have witnessed great kindnesses, great generosity, incredible courage and resilience, and the sharing of sadness and joy. I have witnessed much growth in our students and I am very proud of their accomplishments. I am grateful to my staff who have given so much of their time and talents to bringing out the best in our students. I am particularly grateful to Father Phil for his spiritual leadership and the pastoral care that he provides for our community. I know everyone will miss the strength and joy Father Noel has brought to our school and parish, and wish him all the best in his new parish of St. Anselm. I thank Father Noel and Father Rudy for celebrating mass weekly in our chapel, and appreciate everything Father Phil does to make sure our faith is central to everything we do at St. Paul Secondary. Likewise, I know everyone will miss our beloved chaplaincy team leader Brian Finamore. Brian continued a legacy of witness to our faith brought to this school by chaplains like Patty Ann Dennis and Margie Lannon. His generosity and genius for celebrating our faith with our youth will be missed. I wish him much happiness and health as he begins his position at Cardinal Leger. To our graduates, my prayer for you is continued strength and joy in the Lord as you bring your talents to the world. Go forth and witness all that makes you great as an alumni of this fine school. To our returning students, my prayer for you is a safe and happy summer that brings you back to us in September ready to begin your journey again. God Bless. ›››Chaplaincy Our Living Faith Blessings to all our students upon the completion of another school year. To the graduates we wish you every good thing in the years that are ahead of you. We hope that you take the gifts of faith and hope into your future. Please remember to take God with you as God remains as close to you as the air you breathe. For students returning in the fall, we hope to pick up with you where we have left off to continue to work and faith journey with you for upcoming school year. March, April, May and June have moved at the speed of light. Our grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 Religion classes spent a day away from school on retreats. The theme for grade 9 retreat was Belonging, A Christian Look at Aboriginal Spirituality was the theme for grade 10 retreats and At the Crossroads for the grade 12’s. Catholic Education Week gave out community the chance to celebrate Serving in the Love of Christ. We are saying good-bye to Father Noel, who is leaving the parish at the end of June to move to an east-end Toronto Parish. We thank him and Father Rudy for their faithfulness to our community at Thursday Masses in our chapel. We also thank Father Phil for his fidelity to the faith needs of our school especially with his inspiring homilies at school Masses. We also say good-bye to the school’s beloved Chaplaincy Leader, Brian Finamore. It would be hard to find someone as dedicated to his faith and students as Mr. Finamore has been to our community. He leaves a legacy of service above self, justice for those who suffer and presence for those in need. ›››Digital Media Arts, ICT & Non-Profit High Skills Majors SocDoc Winners Since February students from the Non Profit, ICT and Arts and Culture SHSM’s have been working on a documentary. This combined project had students pulling on the skills and knowledge collected from each of their specialty fields to create a short film that reveals the life-changing work of Dr. Andrew Simone and the CFFC (Canadian Food For Children) that he and his wife Joan founded. All of the students involved have been touched by what Dr. Simone has done. Regular weekly school retreats have student volunteers from St. Paul work at his warehouse to load containers of food and other supplies to then be shipped to third world destinations. All students have a connection and a passion for Dr. Simone’s work, so a film about it was a natural end result. The cross engagement of students working on this project had them actively involved in all aspects of the production, from concept, to development, to production and post production. Using their existing knowledge to foster the idea, students also learned new skills and concepts from the other SHSM specialities through their peers working on this project. The completed documentary titled everyOne was entered into the SocDoc’s film festival in May, hosted in partnership with the Foundation for Education at the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus. SocDoc’s is a documentary festival that offers teachers and students a creative opportunity to make visual and audio statements through the digital vehicle of choice on social justice issues such as poverty, war, homelessness, environment, sex discrimination, addiction, slavery, or prejudice. Out of all the entries in the festival, St. Paul placed first. The film was reviewed by Brian Coulton, Associate Producer at the CBC. His adjudication notes were very flattering, but truly revealed the hard work and dedication of all the students involved: “everyOne is a promising example of a concise and focused profile documentary, whose subject matter speaks directly to the theme of SocDocs. Editorially, the film excels at giving equal weight to the back story of Joan and Andrew Simone, the aim of their organization, the practical measures they employ to achieve that aim, and the challenges they face along the way. Technically, the editing is impressively tight, the doc contains a good variety of shots and media, and the voice-over is well performed. Overall, the writing is very clean, the inclusion of first-person testimonies makes the subject relatable, and the narrative transition from broad to specific helps draw the viewer in. There is a clear amount of organization and focus that went into this doc, and that’s ultimately what elevated it to first place. Great work!” Director Emma Kendrick and head editor Rosanna Zita accepted the award on behalf of the 14 students involved. Black Belt Hall of Fame On May 31, James Whiteman, Studio30 crew member, produced and directed the live video switched event The Canadian Black Belt Hall of Fame. This was an international gala event where inductees from across Canada, the United States, Japan, India, China, and South America were recognized for their work in the Martial Arts, with the public, their philanthropy and untiring efforts to study their specific field of Martial Art. James was running the show, using the skills that he had collected while working with Studio30 to ensure that he created a visually pleasing and actively covered event with the many cameras on site, creating a rapid rapport with a crew that he had never worked with before. The end result was a fantastically switched show that was well received by all. ›››English Grammar Stratford King Lear Performance The students of Mrs. Bentivoglio, Mr. Kay and Ms. Tobin enjoyed a wonderful trip to Stratford to see Colm Feore’s King Lear. As students prepare for their Culminating Performance Tasks and the Final Exam, this was a great opportunity to see what many perceive to be Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy. Macbeth at Toronto Centre for the Arts What an ambitious man and an ambitious woman won’t do for power... not to be confused with the recent provincial election. On April 30 the students of Ms. Tobin and Ms. Alilovic witnessed the Classical Theatre Project’s production of Macbeth which was a bloody and murderous rampage through the kingdom by a tyrant. Students enjoyed the performances by the young cast and some even brought home t-shirt emblazoned with the infamous: ‘Something evil this way comes’. Have a safe and restful summer The St. Paul community continues to be a vibrant place to learn and grow. Have a safe summer and remember to consult the St. Paul website and check the English Department tab on the site for any additional information. Those students entering Grade 10; it is never too early to view and bookmark the provincial EQAO website in preparation for next year. Literature Speaking Prom 2014 St. Paul C.S.S. Prom 2014 was a great success. The students had a wonderful time eating cotton candy and participating in carnival games and contests. They danced the night away under the balloon circus tent on the dance floor. Thank you to all staff and students who participated in this event. ›››Athletics Wrapping Things Up Omnia Cum Corde Everything with Heart is the Motto of the Physical and Health Education Department. Watching athletes work hard and give everything they have for themselves, their teammates and their school, while displaying a wonderful sense of Catholic values, sportsmanship and camaraderie, has been one of the highlights in my role as Physical Education Department head and Athletic Director at St. Paul. Thank you to Antonietta Santogrossi for everything she has done for Phys-Ed and Athletics this year to Discipline, Dedication, Determination help things run smoothly. We are surely going to miss her as she begins anew at St. Aloysius Gonzaga next year. Thank you as well to the administration for all of their support and especially to all of the coaches, for making my job so much easier with your willingness to give so much to make a difference in the lives of our students. Lacrosse The men’s field lacrosse team ended on a high note this season. They entered the first-ever St. Marguerite D’Youville lacrosse tournament held on May 22. They struggled through the round-robin games but held the 4th place spot in the playoffs. Facing off against the 1st place school, St. Edmund Campion, St. Paul came out victorious winning 5-2. Moving on to the finals against Humberview Collegiate, the Wolverines won 5-2, winning the tournament (and the unique trophy) for the first time in history! Floorball Canada Cup Tournament This year St. Paul sent a group of students to the Canada Cup Floorball Championships in Toronto at Ryerson University and the Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens). Floorball is a type of indoor hockey played professionally in countries like Sweden and Finland. In Canada, floorball is a popular high school sport and used in Hockey Canada’s Skills Academies across the country for dry land training. Having received formal recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in December 2008, floorball is slated for its debut at the Olympics in the 2020 Summer Games. St. Paul was one of the fifteen teams entered in the high school division and went 4-0 during the round robin, qualifying for the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, St. Paul came up just short by a score of 2-1 to a club team called Toronto FC (the eventual gold medalists). In the bronze medal game, our Wolverines clawed their way back in the second half to tie the game and send it to a shootout to decide the winner. In the 6th round of a sudden death shootout, Matthew Pogue scored to win the Bronze Medal for the St. Paul Wolverines. We would like to thank all of our graduating players for their hard work in making Floorball a success at St. Paul and hope that we can remain successful for years to come. Varsity Boys Baseball A big thank you to members of the Varsity Boys Baseball team for helping return baseball back to St. Paul. Due to a large number of grade nine and ten athletes, we were able to field a team for the first time in three years. The team shows a lot of promise in the upcoming years with the majority of the team comprised of junior aged players. Good luck to Kyle MacDonald as he pursues his baseball career at Crowder College next year in Missouri. Varsity Boys Soccer The Senior Boys Soccer team had an excellent year, losing only 2 games in Tier I and winning the semifinal ‘AA’ ROPSSAA game against Robert F. Hall with a score of 3-1. The boys faced a very strong St. Martin squad in the final and, even though the game was very close, the team ended up losing 3-2. We qualified for the OFSAA provincial championships as the #18 seed where we went 3-1 in the preliminary games and outscored the 4 teams we played 14-6. We qualified for the OFSAA Quarterfinals but unfortunately we ran into a strong Holy Trinity team and our season ended there. I am extremely proud of the boys as the only 3 ‘AA’ teams we lost to all year were the gold, silver and bronze winners in OFSAA. ›››Athletics two losses and one tie. From try-outs, the coaches, Mr. McTiernan and Mrs. Zanon could tell that this was going to be a team of talent and heart. Throughout the Badminton Badminton was a great success this year. We had the best showing at the tournament with Junior players taking on Senior players from other schools. Over the last couple of years, this is the best team we have put forward ever. We are looking forward to what next year will bring. Thank you to the graduating players for your leadership and dedication to St. Paul Athletics. Varsity Girls Soccer This year at St. Paul the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team went through a rebuilding stage where the team consisted of a brand new set of players. The girls built relationships and the senior players on the team were great role models and truly showed the new team members their passion for soccer. Although we were winless in the season the girls battled adversity as a new team together look forward to next year’s soccer season. The coaches would like to wish the graduating players all the best. To our captain Victoria Cordovado all the best at Tiffin University and the challenges of the NCAA.
