Virtue of the Month– Kindness
This month we will celebrate the virtue of Kindness. Kindness can only be seen
through actions. It’s not enough to say I will be kind or I am kind. We must show
that we are kind by our words and our actions. Through prayer and concentration,
we can get better at showing kindness to everyone we meet.
Catholic Education Week– May 4th-8th, 2015
Exploring Paths of Joy:
“Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on
the road?” - Luke 24:32
Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith
communities. We-parents, students, teachers, administrative and support
staff—walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is that ‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We
grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be
that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. This
year’s theme, Exploring Paths of Joy is supported by five sub-themes, one
for each of the five days of Catholic Education week in order to help students to understand the rich meaning of this year’s theme:
Monday: Walking Together and Sharing our Story
Tuesday: Opening the Scriptures
Wednesday: Welcoming Others to the Table
Thursday: Recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of
the Bread
Friday: Proclaiming the Good News

Chocolate Fundraiser
At the last School Council meeting, the Council decided to do a
chocolate fundraiser to begin in April. Nestle chocolates will be
available to those families interested in supporting this fundraiser.
More information will follow soon.
Late Arrivals
Punctuality in the morning is very important.
Any student arriving at school late is required
to come to the office
to request a late
slip. This allows us
to change our attendance information, and mark
your child late, rather than absent. It
is very important
that students arrive
to school on time and ready to work as late
arrivals disrupt instructional activities and
classroom routines. We respectfully request
that students arrive at school before the bell
rings at 8:30am. Arriving on time and being
prepared to learn helps students form good
work habits and provides a positive beginning to the day, in addition to demonstrating
respect for themselves, their classmates and
their teachers.
PLASP
PLASP Child Care Services operates After
School Programs at this school. The After
School Program runs from the end of the
school day until 6:00p.m. Children participate in recreational activities are served a
nutritious snack daily and have time for
homework. Visit www.plasp.com and register your child online if
you are interested.
ECO-TEAM
Initiatives
This month the
Eco-Team will be organizing various initiatives such as:
Big Crunch Day-March 12th This is a
National Day to build awareness and support of nutrition programs everywhere.
Each student will receive an apple to
“crunch” on.
Big Gulp Day-March 13th: Students
are invited to bring a re-usable container
to use for drinks in order to cut down on
throw away containers.
Earth Hour-March 28th(pm): We will
join the millions of people across the
world who shut their lights off for an hour,
to raise awareness for the planet.
Milk Bags Unlimited is asking the St.
Patrick school community to collect milk
bags to help in the Ebola Outbreak efforts
in Sierra Leone. Milk bag mats are in
great demand and are currently being
shipped to Africa and other countries
worldwide via Dr. Simone’s Missions in
Mississauga. This social justice project
keeps non-biodegradable plastic milk
bags out of our landfills and recycled into
sleeping mats for the needs of others
around the world.
The EcoKids Battery Busters Audit is
an opportunity for students to investigate
and learn about the batteries in their
home and school, the environmental impacts of batteries, and how to safely recycle dead batteries. We will be collecting
used batteries for proper dispensing.
Thanks to the Eco-Team & Miss Gallo for
coordinating these events!

Psych
to Thrive
Schools and families share a common goal: ensuring student success.
Psychology staff at Dufferin‐Peel work together with schools and families to promote student
achievement, mental health and well‐being. Our new PSYCH 5 TO THRIVE initiative offers 5 strategies to
help students thrive at school and at home.
Each one called by name (Isaiah 43:1)
Resilience Skills
Children and teens face challenges every day. When children are resilient they bounce back from
disappointments or unexpected events. When new challenges arise, they come up with solutions and
feel confident implementing them. Here are 5 strategies for building resilience in children.
The good news is that resilience skills can be learned.
Problem‐solve: Give your child opportunities to problem‐solve—at home, at school,
and in the community. Working through problems helps to boost confidence in
strengths and abilities.
Make plans together: Help your child set reasonable goals and a plan for meeting
them. Moving toward those goals—even in tiny steps—should be rewarded rather
than focusing on what hasn’t been done.
Encourage new experiences: Enjoy new adventures with your child. Being out of
one’s comfort zone—perhaps exploring a new library or grocery store—is great
preparation for adjusting to situations that are new and different.
Be a role model: When you face challenges with a calm demeanor, talking through
potential solutions, you are a resilient role model for your child!
Let your children make mistakes. Mistakes help all of us learn, so let your child make
them! Failing a test after not studying can be a tough but valuable lesson—and your
child will probably try a more effective strategy next time.
Change is a part of living and change is often scary for children and teens. Help your child see that change is part
of life and that new goals can replace old goals. Help your child understand the meaning of change, by helping
them to see how they have changed and grown.
For further information, contact your child’s school psychologist, Dr. Goldie Millar,
at St. Patrick School or Dr. Debra Lean, Chief Psychologist, at (905) 890‐0708, Ext. 24330.
