Summary of WKU Libraries Research Instruction Reports
Fiscal Year 2013-14
Western Kentucky University Libraries saw another productive fiscal year of research instruction service. 29 librarians and
staffers contributed library research instruction (RI) reports. The contributors held a total of 491 sessions, with a total of 5,594 people
at those sessions. The total time of spent amounted to 539.5 hours of instruction.
The Department of Public Services (DLPS) led the way with 19 contributors, 346 sessions, 3,766 attendees at those sessions,
and 317 total hours of instruction. The Department of Library Special Collections (DLSC) had 8 contributors, 143 sessions, 1,762
attendees, and 219.5 hours of instruction. The Department of Library Technical Services (DLTS) had 2 contributors, 2 sessions, 66
attendees, and 3 hours of instruction.
With 29 contributors, fiscal year 2013-14 tied with some previous years for the second highest contributor total ever. April had
the greatest number of hours of instruction (102.5), and December the least (6.5). October had the highest number of sessions (92), and
December the least (7). September saw the most attendees (1,449) and December the least (60).
Session attendance averaged 11 persons per session. The average length of time of instruction was 1 hour per session. The
average number of attendees per hour of instruction was 10 people.
A plurality of the sessions (178) took place in Helm-Cravens Library. Most of the sessions were led by an instructor / lecturer
(474). A plurality of sessions (208) lasted 1 hour in duration. There were 242 afternoon sessions, 193 morning sessions, and 57 evening
sessions. Monday and Tuesday were the most common days of instruction (127 sessions each day). The fewest number of sessions (3)
were held on Sundays (these were all individual instruction sessions).
Undergraduates were the most common group in attendance, and there were 200 sessions where the instruction was in the form
of a research appointment with a personal librarian. 219 sessions used TOPCAT.
