Minutes: The September 23, 2013, minutes were approved as submitted on a motion by Deana Groves and a second by Bryan Carson.
Dean’s Report/Announcements: In Connie’s absence due to the death of her mother, Brian Coutts conducted the meeting. Deana gave more sad news. Lynn
Pawley suffered a heart attack on Saturday and is on life support at St.
Thomas Hospital in Nashville. She later passed away on Monday, September 30,
2013.
-Brian distributed Map-Works results for the three questions submitted by the libraries for inclusion in the survey for review and discussion.
Library Systems Office: Eric gave highlights from the LSO:
-30 requests/tasks were completed.
-The ST ViewScan II and monitor have arrived and a tentative installation and instruction session is expected on October 16th or 17th. More information forthcoming.
-A new ID card reader for events has arrived and is located in the DLPS office.
-LSO staff met with staff from the Helpdesk in an Ideas Meeting. The items discussed were creating TeamDynamix templates for library faculty and staff to use for technology requests and the LSO providing documentation for library specific programs that would assist the helpdesk in answering common questions they may receive.
Grants/Assessments: Bryan reported that the QEP task force met and discussed the status of the proposal. Academic Affairs will set an open forum at the end of October or beginning of November to announce the QEP theme. This theme, Evidence & Argument, is a combination of the libraries’ proposal and the proposal from the English and Communication departments.
Literary Outreach: Kristie reported that the SOKY Reads! author, Michael
Morris, had over 100 people at his event Thursday, September 26 at the
Episcopal Church. His writing workshop on campus went well, and his lunch with a local book club was a highlight of his visit. The Sisterhood grant for
2014 and 2015 SOKY Reads! programs did not make it to the next level for consideration. Kristie will continue searching for funding for the program.
-In two weeks, Kristie will be talking to Warren County Public School students about the writing contest that SOKY Book Fest sponsored that allowed students’ books to be published. Last year there were two WCPS students who signed books at Book Fest, and everyone really enjoyed it, so the contest will be repeated this year.
-Kristie reminded everyone that David Bell will be launching his new book at the Warren County Public Library tomorrow night at 6pm.
-The Fall into Books program needs about $1500-$2000 to be fully funded (to give books away) this year. Kristie is searching for funding for the program.
Marketing: Jennifer mentioned the Bus ads promoting the libraries are now up in all the buses.
-There was an ad for the scrapbook workshop placed in the newspaper last weekend and a press release going to media.
-Information promoting the JFK Memory Project is slowly getting out to the public. Jonathan Jeffrey and Jennifer are working with William Skaggs in the
Alumni Office to get an email out to all the alums who were in Bowling Green during the JFK visit and assassination. Jennifer did clarify that memories can be from anyone and not just individuals living in Bowling Green.
-Regarding Homecoming, postcards are at the printer, signage, sliders and posters are done and the press release is ready to go. Crystal Bowling will be leading a group dressed as a book character representing the Libraries during the Homecoming parade.
Department Reports:
DLTS: Deana reported that Jack Montgomery’s book chapter entitled “Java City:
Developing a Successful Cultural Center” has been published in ALA Editions,
Bringing the Arts into the Library.
-Deana has been appointed as a jury member for the ALA H.W. Wilson Library
Staff Development Grant award. It is awarded to a library organization for a program to further its staff development goals and objectives. The award includes $3,500 and a 24k gold-framed citation, donated by the H.W. Wilson
Company/EBSCO Publishing.
DLPS: Brian reported that WKU Libraries celebrated Banned Books Week,
September 22-28 an annual ALA event, with exhibits in the Helm--Cravens
Library and the Educational Resources Centre. The Helm-Cravens display, featured on Cravens fourth and fifth floors, had the theme “Jump on the
Banned Wagon” with a selection of banned books and the reasons why they were challenged. The displays and week were promoted on the Twitter page.
-Editorial cartoonist Marc Murphy from the Courier Journal will be the KY
Live! featured speaker on Thursday, October 10 at 7:00pm at Barnes & Noble.
It’s rumored that Marc’s cartoons draw more responses than all of the other
CJ features. When not drawing cartoons, Marc and his wife are prominent
Louisville attorneys.
-Samuel Marder Holocaust survivor and violinist will be visiting Bowling
Green as a guest of Potter College’s Department of Music and will speak in local schools on prejudice. He’ll be speaking in the Far Away Places series on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00pm at Barnes & Noble and signing copies of his new book Devils Among Angels: A Journey From Paradise and Hell to Life .
DLSC: Nancy said that Jonathan Jeffrey is continuing to work on the JFK
Memories project and has received many excellent photographs and memories of the event. He will also be speaking to the Tennessee State Archives October
18 about the Kentucky Folklife Program Archives.
-Special Collections had their collection of paper dolls featured in an article in Transatlantica. This is an international-biannual magazine of American studies. The article was “Coloring Their World: Americans and
Decorative Color in the Nineteenth Century.”
-Allison Day and Nancy Richey recently attended a seminar on Archives:
Principles and Practices.
-University Archives continues processing President Gary Ransdell’s papers and oral histories.
