Global Strategies and Studies Learning Abroad Office Faculty-Led Learning Abroad Program Workshop February 12, 2015 TODAY’S WORKSHOP • • • • • • • Welcome and Introduction Learning Abroad and Faculty-Led Programs at UH What the Learning Abroad Office Does Program Development Process (Simplified) Panelist Self Introduction Discussion and Q&A with Panelists Next Steps LEARNING ABROAD AT UH FY14 Program Participation 406 students; 1% of total enrollment Other REEP 6% 3% Affiliated 36% Faculty-Led 55% Includes “traditional” study abroad programs plus internships, research collaboratives, service learning, and other academic/non-academic experiential programs WHAT WE DO FOR UH FACULTY • Information Resource: o Conceptual and operational guidance o Faculty Resources section of Learning Abroad website • Provide dedicated webpage for promotion and student reference • Promote Faculty-Led Learning Abroad Programs at university events and advising sessions • Administer International Education Fee Scholarship (IEFS) • Responsible for executing Passport for Coogs initiative • Submit SCH waivers to Financial Services for crediting to student accounts • Ensure compliance with THECB and UH policies and requirements Planning and Development (18 - 10 months in advance) • • • • • • Conceptualize course and objectives Obtain approval from department/college Research providers for services Work with DBA on administrative procedures Prepare budget and set program costs Create application form and determine criteria for student participants Marketing and Student Recruitment (10 - 5 months in advance) • Develop flyers, detailed brochures and other marketing materials • Post on website; partner with Learning Abroad office • Schedule info sessions (i.e. “pitch parties”) • Try something different to get the word out • Prepare post-acceptance materials Pre-Departure (5 - 2 months in advance) • Continue recruitment activities as needed • Ensure students have registered for the course • Work with the Learning Abroad office regarding collection of required student documents • Schedule a series of pre-departure orientations covering academic requirements and culture • Attend Risk Management Training and determine in-country safety plan Pre-Departure Continued (2 months - 1 month in advance) • Reconfirm all travel arrangements and vendor payments • Deliver copy of student documents to Learning Abroad office • Prepare emergency contact and detailed itinerary info sheet for students and parents • Review safety plan and prepare in-country orientation after arrival Panel Discussion • • • • • Richard Armstrong, The Honors College Steve Werner – C.T.
