Listen to their prayers, and bless them in all they do for you. Let them share with Jesus your Son and Mary our Mother, in the everlasting happiness of heaven. May God who loves us all give our Mothers His blessings, and fill their lives with joy. Amen. VIRTUE FOR MAY: Acceptance This month we will celebrate the virtue of acceptance. The virtue of ACCEPTANCE means we accept ourselves and others just the way we are. God created all of us in His image, and God does not make mistakes. Being a part of God’s family means that we love and welcome everyone just the way Jesus did. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where it is easier to follow the crowd than to stand up for what we know is right. However, Jesus wants us to accept everyone even when it is hard. All students received an “Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal” medallion necklace following the celebration. We thank our Rosary Apostolate volunteers for their prayers and guidance! CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK During the week of May 2 to 6, 2016, Our Lady of Good Voyage Catholic School and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will celebrate the significant contribution that Catholic Education has made to the community, the province and to Canada. Our Catholic Graduate Expectations challenge students to articulate in society those fundamental values that underpin Catholic education. The theme for this year is: Catholic Education: Opening Doors of Mercy. We-parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff –walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We can nurture our faith through prayer and knowledge and our living in a vibrant Catholic community. The scriptural passage that guides our theme is: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7) The five sub-themes for Catholic Education Week are as follows: 1. Mercy that Welcomes 2. Mercy that Loves 3. Mercy that Forgives 4. Mercy that Lives the Gospel 5. Mercy that Rejoices Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our Church, and in our society. We invite all members of our community, to participate in the celebrations and activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic Education Week 2016 in our schools. Girls are not to wear anything strapless, spaghetti straps, or have bare midriffs. Sleeveless tops are permitted as long as they are 3 fingers-width (5 cm) of material on the shoulder. Short shorts and skirts as well as clothing of a suggestive nature or displaying offensive wording/images are not allowed. Outfits that are appropriate for small children may not be appropriate for older children. Shorts are permitted for both boys and girls provided they are modest. In keeping with the Board’s Mission Statement and Catholic teachings, each school is committed to standards of neatness, cleanliness, modesty and good taste. Flip flops are not appropriate attire for the schoolyard, as they do not support the foot properly. We ask parents to monitor the footwear selections of their children for safety reasons. SUNSCREEN, HATS AND WATER BOTTLES With the anticipated arrival of summer weather, we remind all students, parents and guardians of the potential damage of UV rays. It is good practice to put on unscented sunscreen first thing in the morning and for students to apply sunscreen again during the lunch hour if needed. Hats are encouraged in the playground. Students are permitted to bring water bottles to school but not permitted to bring them on the playground. Water bottles are to be filled inside the classroom and not at the hallway water fountains. Please reinforce these expectations with your child(ren). WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN On Thursday, May 5th, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., we are having a “Welcome to Kindergarten” presentation for all parents and their children registered to start Kindergarten in September 2016. Due to the nature of the activities, we ask that only new Kindergarten students and their parents attend. Welcome to Kindergarten is sponsored by the “Learning Partnership” and is supported by The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. VICTORIA DAY On Monday May 23rd we celebrate Victoria Day. There will be no school on that day. We sincerely wish you a wonderful holiday with your family! EQAO 2016 EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) testing of our grades 3 and 6 students will take place from May 25th to June 8th. Please try to avoid scheduling any appointments or anything else that will take your child out of school during these dates. Grades 3 and 6 parents received a letter about the upcoming assessments. The EQAO website (www.eqao.com) provides many resources for both parents and teachers. ARE YOU MOVING? If you are planning a move, or have already moved, please let us know. You are required to complete new assessment forms even if you move within our school boundaries If you are moving but would like your child to remain at Our Lady of Good Voyage, please submit your request in writing. We will be preparing classes for September, 2016 and this information will be helpful in determining class sizes. In the past, we have had to reorganize our classes in September due to unexpected transfers. LOCK DOWNS AND FIRE DRILLS During the months of May and June, we will continue to practice a number of emergency response procedures. All schools are required by Board policy to practice these procedures throughout the year. We have these rehearsals for precautionary purposes only, so that in the event of an actual emergency, students will be prepared to respond in a safe and responsible manner. CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL The next C.S.A.C. meeting is set for Tuesday, May 17th, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the library. All are welcome! PA DAY – INTERVIEW DAY A reminder to all parents that Friday, May 13, 2016 will be a P.A Day for all students, as teachers will be engaged in Provincial Priorities in a Catholic context. Therefore, there will be no school for students on this day. SCHOOL WEBSITE Please visit our website at http://www.dpcdsb.org/OLGDV for the latest school information OLGV is on Twitter! These attitudes guide our behavior and influence our responses to daily events. - Dr. Robert Brooks Probability: A number from 0 to 1 that shows how likely it is that an event will happen. Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset: Tip # 4. Be mindful of the goals you set for your children and the messages they send. Work with your child to set goals that are reasonable and desirable for both of you. All goals should emphasize growth – the development of a skill or the expanding knowledge. Grades 7 & 8: Continuing the Conversation About Your Money Decisions! Let’s discuss “Money in the News”… Have your child monitor the news in all its forms (T.V., on-line…) to watch for stories about money. Talk with your child about some of the stories or items they have heard about in the news (e.g., how could this ‘news story’ impact our community and/or family financially?) Family Math Activities K-3 BigBiIdeas In probability situations, one can never be sure what will happen next. Try this game during a car ride: Call out events and have your child decide whether it is something likely, is not likely or will never happen. You are limited only by your imagination! (e.g., we will swim in January, a dinosaur is coming to the local zoo, the leaves will change colour in the fall) Probability from 4-6 Experimental Probability (a real-life experience): Suppose we have three pairs of socks in a drawer, one blue pair, one green pair, and one red pair. What is the probability of getting a matching pair if we reach into the drawer and, without looking, pick two socks? Theoretical Probability (based on analyzing what could happen): Suppose you have three pairs of socks in the laundry, one blue pair, one green pair, and one red pair. Now suppose that somehow four socks disappear. Which is more likely: that the two socks that are left will match or that they will not match?
