Father of creation
Whose Son Jesus incarnated in time
And whose Spirit enlivens our lives today
May we honor the height of your creation,
The Human Family
In every hue that you chose to give each
Person of our Human Family
Jesus, brother of us all
Your prayer to the Father “that they all may be one”
Through the Holy Spirit
May we witness this Unity of One
Spirit of God in the month of appreciating
The gift of your children of African descent
May we be inspired to see your kingdom mystery
In one facet of the jewel of our Human Family’s descent
VIRTUE for FEBRUARY
Respect is seeing the goodness in others.
It helps us to see others as God sees them, to accept them as they
are,
and to treat them with dignity.

this month on the Catholic virtue of RESPECT, we
recognize, highlight, and celebrate the gifts that our rich
cultural and racial diversity enable us to experience and
enjoy.
ASH WEDNESDAY

Please note that the parish is your first source for obtaining
information for sacramental preparation.

Parish Office for more details.
FOOD DONATIONS NEEDED
Our grade 8 students will be going to Dr. Simone’s
warehouse on Monday, February 22nd. At the warehouse
they will assist in sorting, packaging, and unloading
donation items for children in third world countries. They
are asking for your help in collecting the following:




Canned, dried food (beans, powdered milk)
Personal Care items (i.e. soap, toothpaste,
toothbrush, dental floss, shampoo)
School Supplies (pens, pencils, pencil crayons,
notepads, colouring books, erasers, etc.)
New/gently used clothing
The Liturgical Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday
(Feb. 10th) and continues until Easter weekend (March 25
- 28). The custom of placing ashes on the heads of faithful
on the Wednesday before the First Sunday of Lent
probably dates back to the fourth century. At that time,
public sinners would come to the Church to have ashes
placed on their heads by the Bishop as a sign that they
wished to change their way of life, to do public penance
during Lent and to return to full union with the
community of God’s people. By the Middle Ages, it had
become a custom for all the faithful to come on Ash
Wednesday to receive the Blessed Ashes as a sign that
they wished to change their way of life, do penance and
strengthen their commitment to Christ during the Lenten
season. Our Ash Wednesday liturgy will take place on
Wednesday, February 10th at 9:45 a.m. in the gym. All
are invited to attend.
LENTEN MASS
All parents and visitors are invited to our school’s Lenten
mass which will be held on Wednesday, March 25th at 10
a.m. in the school gym.
DID YOU KNOW?
A Catholic school can never be simply a place where
students accumulate skills and information, a place where
they learn how to get ahead and sell their gifts on the open
market. If this were so, our schools would prepare students
for nothing more than a shallow life far removed from the
profound vision of life revealed by the gospel.

the Times para.7)
ROSARY APOSTOLATE
The St. Joseph Parish Rosary Apostolate volunteers have
been visiting classes each month, praying the rosary with
our students. We encourage you to support your child’s
faith journey by praying the rosary along with them at
home.

CLOTHING IN COLD WEATHER
Children will go outside for recess and
lunch hour, weather permitting. On
extremely cold days we limit the amount
of time students spend outdoors.
Children will be kept in at recess if the
wind chill equivalent temperature is
minus 25 degrees Celsius or lower. This is in accordance
with the policy of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School
Board. Children should come to school with boots, winter
coats, snow pants, scarves, hats and mittens. Also, an extra
pair of mittens and socks is helpful to have at school in case
they need a dry change. In order to keep their workplace
clean, please ensure your child has a pair of “indoor” shoes.
COLD and FLU SEASON
This is a reminder that if your child is not feeling well, your
child should stay home. If your child is well enough to
come to school, he/she is well enough to go outside for
recesses and the lunch hour. Please remind and assist your
children in dressing appropriately for the weather so that
they can enjoy the winter season.
VALENTINE COOKIES FOR SHARE LIFE
Nut-free valentine sugar cookies will
be on sale from February 8th – 12th, at
a cost of $1 per cookie. All funds
raised through the cookie sales will
be used toward the Grade 7/8 Camp
Muskoka trip. Students may
purchase a cookie for themselves, for
friends and family! They may also choose a special
Valentine message to go along with their cookie, with the
assistance of some of our grade 8 students.

VIRTUES EDUCATION
The virtues are at the foundation of everything we do
and say at Our Lady of Good Voyage Catholic School.
Although all of the virtues are woven into our
conversations, each month we highlight one virtue
through a variety of means such as daily prayers,
bulletin boards,
CFTO classroom conversations, monthly virtue
assemblies, and individual virtue awards. On February
23rd at 1:15 p.m. Mrs. Mendonca’s grade 5 class will be
leading us in prayer and reflection, focusing on the
virtue of Respect. Following the liturgy, the monthly
Virtue awards will be presented to one student in each
class. Parents and family friends are welcome to join us.
REPORT CARD AND INTERVIEWS
The Term one report card will be going home on
Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Included in the report card
envelope is your designated interview time. Interviews
will take place on the evening of Thursday, February 4th
and during the day on Friday, February 5th, which is a
P.D. day. Please take this opportunity to speak with
your child’s teacher about your child’s progress.
Page 3: Parents are asked to complete Page 3 of the
Ontario Report Card. The Parent – Student Response
Form is an opportunity for parents and students to
comment upon student achievement. This is also an
opportunity for parents to express their personal
commitment to helping their child set goals. When
parents return this form to the school, it will be placed in
their child’s Ontario Student Record (O.S.R.).
EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office)
testing of our grades 3 and 6 students will take place
from May 25th to June 8th. Please try to avoid scheduling
any appointments or anything else that will take your
child out of school during these dates. A letter to grades
3 and 6 parents will be sent home closer to the testing
dates.
JUNIOR-INTERMEDIATE
PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTESTS
During January, our Junior and Intermediate students have
been preparing speeches. The school’s Junior level contest
will take place on Wednesday, February 3rd and the
Intermediate level contest will take place on Thursday
February 4th. Both competitions will be held in the gym,
around 12:35 p.m. The finalists will qualify for competitions
outside of the school, such as the Mississauga South Family
of Schools competition, the Royal Canadian Legion, Lions
Club, and Catholic Women’s league competitions. Thank
you to Mr. Mattarollo for organizing this event!
SCHOOL PHONE USAGE
Over the month of January, there was an
increase in the number of students requesting
to use the phone. We ask that students ensure
that all school materials (including agendas,
running shoes, etc.) are brought to school, so that students
are better able to participate in learning. Special home
arrangements need to be made prior to school and
documented in the agenda book, to inform the classroom
teacher. We appreciate your support!
NATIONAL FLAG DAY
February 15, 1966 was declared National Flag Day of
Canada. It recognized the day in 1965 when our red and
white maple leaf flag was raised over Parliament Hill in
Ottawa, and in communities across Canada. Red and white
were designated as Canada’s official colours in 1921 by His
Majesty King George V.
LUNCH SUPERVISORS NEEDED
We are presently hiring lunch supervisors.
If you are interested in earning a little extra money while
assisting with student supervision over the lunch hour
(11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.), please contact Ms. Klein.
IMMUNIZATION
This is a reminder to ensure that your child’s
immunization is up to date. The health department will
be contacting parents/guardians of children whose
immunization is not up to date. If the records are not up
to date by April 18, 2016, an order will be received from
the health department to suspend your child from
school.
HEAD LICE
Please check your children’s scalp and hair for lice on a
regular basis. If you notice any lice, please notify the
school. By working together, we can reduce the number
of head lice cases in the school.
YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Mental health means striking a balance in all aspects of
your life: social, physical, spiritual, economic and
mental. Reaching a balance is a learning process. At
times, you may tip the balance too much in one direction
and have to find your footing again. Your personal
balance will be unique, and your challenge will be to stay
mentally healthy by keeping that balance.
The same is true for your children. For more information
please check out the Free online Resources at the
Canadian Mental Health Association.

STUDENT SAFETY
The throwing of snowballs and/or ice may cause
dangerous situations where students could become
injured. We remind all students regularly that snow/ice
is to remain on the ground. We appreciate parent
support in reviewing these snow safety rules with your
child(ren).
PHYSICAL EDUCATION SAFETY
“Students must wear appropriate
clothing for physical education
classes. Running shoes are a
minimum uniform requirement.
Shorts or sweatpants and t-shirts are
examples of appropriate clothing. Some ill-fitting
clothing, scarves, jewelry, hard-soled shoes and socks
without shoes can inhibit movement and possibly cause
injury during active movement. Jewelry must not be
worn. Jewelry which cannot be removed and which
present a safety concern (i.e. medical alert identification,
jewelry, earrings) must be taped. Long hair must be
secured so as not to block vision.” Physical Education
Safety Guidelines.
AROUND THE HALLS AT OLGV
JUNIOR BOYS BASKETBALL
The Junior Boys basketball season has begun and the team is
off to a great start! The boys are demonstrating great
teamwork and sportsmanship. A special thank you goes out
to Mr. Mattarollo for coaching the Boys Junior Team this
year.
OLGV HOCKEY

All Saints’ Intermediate Ice Hockey Tournament. Thank
you to Mr. Burke for all of his time spent coaching the team!
As well, thank you to our parents who were able to cheer on
our team! Congratulations to the following OLGV students
who were on the team: Alicia, Aidan, Alex, Brett, Ethan, and
Tyler. And, a special congratulations to the MVPs:
Aidan, Brett and Alex B.
GIRLS INTERMEDIATE SOCCER TEAM
Congratulations to the girls’ intermediate
soccer team who represented our school
well at the Timberwolves Invitational
Intermediate and Junior Soccer
Tournament on January 22nd! Congratulations to this
year’s team: Julia M., Lauren F., Meagan, Julia C.,
Rachael, Margarida, Krystal, Julia M., Marisa, Mara,
Alicia, Lauren.
NATIONAL SWEATER DAY
Since 2010, over a million Canadians have participated in
National Sweater Day. This year the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board will be participating, as a
fun way to learn about the importance of saving energy.
According to the WWF, heating accounts for 80% of
residential energy used in homes and
schools across Canada.
If every
Canadian home and school turned
down the temperature of their home
or school by just 2 degrees Celsius
during the winter for 4 months, that
would save enough energy to close an
entire coal-powered plant. So on February 4th, please
send your child to school with a warm sweater as we will
be lowering the thermostat.
CHESS CLUB
Mme Chataway continues to hold try-outs
for the Primary, Junior and Intermediate
Chess Team on Tuesdays over the lunch
recess. Thank you to Mme Chataway for
volunteering her time with our students!!
Primary, Junior and Intermediate students will have an
opportunity to compete in the Mississauga South Chess
Tournament to be held on March 30th at St. Luke. More
details will be shared later, once the teams are finalized.
SCHOOL YARD MIX-UP
This year, as a way of promoting leadership and pro-social
behavior, students are participating in a schoolyard mix-up
activity during the last Friday of every month. Students in
older grades mentor and lead the younger students in
various outdoor activities during the lunch recess. Students
caught in the act of awesome (pop-out) behavior earn a
“pop-out award” and receive a complimentary
bag of popcorn. Thank you to our School
Council for providing the popcorn awards
and to Mrs. Traynor and Ms. Rozario for
coordinating this monthly special day! The
winners of the “pop-out awards” for January
are: Alethea, AndrewW., Brett, Christian A.,
Justin T., Nicholas P., Nicholas T., and Riley.
ECO TEAM and HEALTHY SCHOOLS
Over the month of January, our School Eco Team has
been sharing Eco tips over announcements. They made
Eco buttons and celebrated the beautiful colours in our
environment by holding special “colour spirit days”.
PARKING LOT SAFETY
We have had situations where parents/guardians are not
following parking lot safety/etiquette rules. Please
remember to park your car at River Grove Community
Centre or in the front parking lot, where possible, and
walk your child to the school yard play area. Please do
not park your car in the Kiss and Ride Lanes; this holds
up the flow of traffic and causes an unsafe situation. At
no time should cars be parking in the front of the school
where the buses pick-up/drop off and along the side exit
driveway, for safety reasons. (NOTE: During the school
day, parking is available in the side parking lot.)
UPDATE YOUR RECORDS
Parents, if your home phone number, cell
number, work number or email address
has changed please notify the school
office. It is necessary to have current
information in order for us to keep in
contact with you.
PA DAY – INTERVIEW DAY
A reminder to all parents that Friday, February 5, 2016 will
be a P.A Day for all students, as
teachers will be engaged in
interviews throughout the day.
FAMILY DAY
On Monday February 15th we celebrate Family Day. There
will be no school for staff or students on that day. We
sincerely wish you a wonderful holiday with your family!
MARCH BREAK
A reminder that the school will be closed March 14 – 18 for
our mid-winter break. School will begin again on Monday,
March 21st.
