PRAYER
God our Father, your Son Jesus gave up His life to free us
from the power of sin and death.
He showed us that the greatest love is in giving up one’s life
for others.
This month, we remember those who fought and died for our
freedom. We ask you to bless and console them together with
their families.
Help us to understand the sacrifices they made in leaving their
loved ones to face the horrors of war. May we never forget
their generosity.
May your Holy Spirit give us the courage to resist evil in all
its forms and show us how to be peacemakers through prayer
and action, lest we forget those who fought, suffered and died
that we might have the freedom and peace we enjoy today.
We ask this through Jesus
Christ, our Lord.
Amen

VIRTUE: Conscience
Conscience is the sense of the moral goodness or
blameworthiness of one’s own actions, intentions, or
character. It is combined with a strong feeling of
obligation to do right or be good. God gave us a
conscience that includes the standards of how God
desires us to live. We know right from wrong.
Our conscience guides us in all we do.

iPADS, PEDS and Wi-Fi
Dufferin-Peel students (K – grade 8) have access to
computers and iPads at school this year. We are
very thankful for the 30 iPads that were purchased
by the Board for our students to share. Over the
month of October, Mrs. Servedio and staff have
been introducing the iPads to the students: care of
the iPads and protocols for sharing them
responsibly.
As well, during the month of October, the
“Personal Electronic Device used with Wi-Fi
Network Student Agreement”
(GF 337) was sent home.
Your child’s teacher will
inform parents in writing
when students may bring
their PEDs to school for
educational purposes. Please also
note that the GF337 must be completed by parents
to confirm that their child has permission to bring
their PED to school on these occasions.
For more information, contact Ms. Klein at the
school.
YOUTH EDUCATION OFFICER VISIT
Constable Billy, our school’s Youth Education
Officer, will be visiting classes on November 23rd
and 30th. He will be talking with the students about
age appropriate safety matters, such as street
proofing, bullying, and internet safety/cyber
bullying.
CROSSING GUARDS
Crossing guards are available to students and their
parents at the following locations and times:
River Grove Ave./Willow Way
(8:05 – 8:50 and 3:05 – 3:50)
And,
River Grove Ave./Highbrook Ave.
(8:05 – 8:40, 11:30 – 11:45 & 12:05-12:30 & 3 – 3:50)
Crossing guards are responsible for crossing
students and anyone else of any age, including
parents, while they are on duty. Students and
parents must wait until the crossing guard signals
them to enter the crosswalk. The crossing guard
will first enter the crosswalk, proceed to the centre
of the roadway and ensure that traffic is stopped,
before directing the students and parents to
proceed into the crosswalk.
Drivers must wait until the school crossing guard
finishes crossing the students and both the crossing
guard and the students are safely on the sidewalk
before proceeding through the intersection.
DUFFERIN-PEEL REMINDERS and
RESOURCES: Cold and Flu Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board continues to be
vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and
that our school communities are educated regarding
good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These
practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as
the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board
increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as
reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention
with students and staff. Many resources are utilized
from our regional health units.
A reminder, as well, that
communicable diseases can be
contracted in public places
throughout the year. For
example, cold-related
viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from
person to person through hand contact. Cold and
flu viruses typically peak from December through
February, but can start as early as October.
BE SMART, GET A HEAD START
ON PEDICULOSIS
Head lice are always present in the community. By
checking your child’s head once a week for head
lice, you will catch it early and treat it before it has a
chance to spread. Should you suspect that your
child(ren) have head lice, please notify the school.
Remember, an infestation of lice is not a reflection of
the cleanliness of your child. In fact, students with
appropriate hygiene habits are as susceptible to lice
as any other group. A reminder to all to refrain
from sharing hats at any time, but especially during
the winter months.
The treatment of pediculosis is simple. Specially
medicated shampoo or cream rinse is available from
your pharmacist. Carefully follow the
manufacturer’s directions and remove all nits from
the hair.
Any infected student will need to be checked before
re-entry to class.
Peel Health (www.peelregion.ca/health/) is
available to provide advice to parents, school staff
and students about treatment and prevention.
COLD and FLU SEASON
In the colder weather, we receive requests to allow
children to remain indoors when the students have
a cold, flu, etc. Please note that we cannot comply,
as we neither have the facilities nor the staff, to
supervise these students. If your child is too ill to
go outside for recess, then he/she is too ill to be at
school. Moreover, health officials indicate that
fresh air is good for children as long as they are
dressed appropriately.
On extremely cold days, we limit the amount of
time the students spend out of doors. We obtain
our weather information from the Environment
Canada Weather Information Line and follow
Board guidelines.
WINTER WEAR
As the colder weather begins, please ensure that
your child comes to school prepared to participate
in all activities, including outdoor recess. All
children should have hats, scarves, gloves, warm
coats and boots.
Snow pants keep children dry and
warm on snowy or wet winter
days and are highly
recommended. It is also a great
idea to keep a spare pair of socks
in your child’s backpack.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing
procedures, as well as other preventative measures,
as outlined in the various Peel Health and
Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources
available to you through their websites. As always,
children who are unwell, should be kept at home.
Flu Clinics
Also available on the Peel Health and WDG
websites, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics.

INDOOR / OUTDOOR SHOES
As boot weather approaches it is even more vital
that each and every student keep a pair of shoes at
school to change into before entering the
classrooms and other common areas within the
school such as the gym and library.
Sand and dirt from outside make the hallways
slippery and unsafe for staff, students and visitors.

Estimation
Estimating develops a sense of number and is
consolidated through practice and reflection.
This also develops risk-taking, problem solving,
and the idea that there is a range of possible
answers.
Family Math Activity
K-3
With your child, fill a jar with an item you can find around the house (buttons, macaroni, coins,
jelly beans, etc.). Family members take turns estimating how many items there are in the jar.
Take out a hand full and count them, then ask if anyone would like to change their estimate.
Finally, count the items in the jar. Whose estimate was the closest?
Grades 4-6
Estimate how many bags of milk your family will need for the week. At the end of the week, count
up the number of bags you actually used. Estimate the time needed for a trip. If the trip is
expected to take 25 minutes, when do you have to leave? Estimate the distance of a trip or a
walk. How close were you? Did you use the best measure (metres, kilometres)?
Need extra help in Grade 7 or 8 math?
Visit the Homework Help website for free help from Ontario certified teachers. On this site, students
have access to live chat rooms between the hours of 5:30-9:30 from Sunday to Thursday and 24/7
resources such as videotaped lessons and interactive tutorials. Homework Help is ideal for
understanding homework, reviewing lessons, studying for tests, and searching math topics.
Register today at https://homeworkhelp.ilc.org/. All you need to register
is your student OEN number which is found on your report card.
If you have additional questions, please contact your classroom teacher.
