Dear Parents of students in Kindergarten: May is Speech and Hearing Awareness Month. Here are some ideas that you and your children can do during the month of May to help develop better communication skills. On the calendar below, Saturday and Sunday activities promote language and literacy development. Tuesday and Thursday activities promote hearing and listening skills. Every student has a voice! From the Speech-Language, Hearing and Vision Department.

2 Have child set table and talk about the object names (e.g., cutlery, food).

3 Talk about locations (e.g., spoon beside plate, napkin under spoon).

10 Talk about opposites during bath time (e.g., full/empty pail, water on/off, in/out of tub, wet/dry toy).

(e.g., who, what, when. where, why).

24 Sort laundry into categories (e.g., whites vs. darks; match socks together).

31 While driving, play games looking for letters in license plates and signs.

5 Brainstorm sounds you hear around the house and outside.

12 Discuss if you know anyone with a hearing loss and what helps them hear.

19 Discuss strategies to use when you can't hear or don’t understand something

7 Think of words to match the sounds you hear (e.g., whirr, swish, thud).

14 Name some loud and soft sounds

(e.g., car horn vs. wind).

21 Name some high and low pitched sounds

(e.g., bird chirp vs. large dog bark).

(e.g., shapes, colour, size).

9 Name objects being used during bath time

(e.g., body parts, temperature, faucet, soap, towel).

16 Read the same bedtime story 3 days in a row and encourage a conversation about it.

Encourage your child to retell the story to you.

23 While getting dressed, talk about the order of the events (e.g., first underwear, then socks).

30 While driving, talk about the common signs and the sounds (e.g., /s/ for stop).
