POLONIUS: WHAT DO YOU READ, MY LORD?
HAMLET: WORDS, WORDS, WORDS.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. HAMLET, ACT II SCENE II
December 2015 Vol. 2 Iss. 4
As the season begins to turn from chilly to downright cold,
we start to anticipate the holiday season. As we eagerly
await Christmas and other seasonal holidays, it’s important
to take time to appreciate the joy of waiting. Waiting to give
gifts can be just as wonderful as waiting to get a gift. Perhaps
over the holidays you’ll be one of many people in the airport,
joyfully awaiting the arrival of distant relatives. What about
waiting to sleep in, or stay up late? The anticipation of joy
can be just as exciting as its arrival.
The library would like to wish you great love and joy this
holiday season!

LIBRARY NEWS
STREAMING VIDEOS NOW AVAILABLE!
While the library might be big on books, we’re also big on ideas. We’ve got a new idea for our
learning community: streaming videos! Next time you’re searching though the catalogue at
http://dpcd.ent.sirsidynix.net/client/ndame, you might notice a little
logo on some of your
results. This logo indicates a video resource that’s completely free to use by our community (the
username and password to access these videos are found on the updated yellow e-resources handout
available in the library.)
Topics available vary widely and can provide a much-needed boost to your resource lists. All the
videos are from reputable sources like the National Film Board of Canada and Foundry Films Inc. (a
Toronto-based award-winning production company.) If you’re looking for a great resource or just
wandering around the web for a cool video to watch, try searching the Notre Dame catalogue and see
what you get! If you have any trouble finding or accessing these resources, please see Ms. Corbett.
COMMUNITY NEWS
HOLIDAY SEASON REMINDERS
As we get ready for winter weather (snow!) and big holiday events (Jingle Jam!), we would like to
remind our students to be extra mindful of their behaviour and surroundings both outside and inside
our school walls. Being respectful and kind will hopefully lead to a fun and safe Christmas holiday for
our entire community!
ON DISPLAY THIS MONT H
This month, the upper level display has been graciously created by Ms.
Cisterna’s first period class! They have done a wonderful job filling our
display with their favourite novels like Goal and The Maze Runner. If
you’re looking for a shorter read, try some of the magazine picks, like
Sport Illustrated. Some of their selections also have corresponding
reviews, to give you some idea about what to expect. We are enormously
thankful for the students’ help in creating such a fun and inviting display
for us! Our lower level display is all about our brand new reads. We have a
wide and wonderful selection of non-fiction and fiction titles. New novels
from Scott Westerfeld (author of the Uglies series) and Rainbow Rowell
(author of Fangirl) are on display now! We hope you get a chance to pick
out some great books for the holiday break!

FEATURED REVIEWS – BY MEMBERS OF MS. CISTERNA’S PERIOD 1 CLASS
Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment (Book 1) by James Patterson
This book is for people who like fast paced books that don’t stop and for people who
also love action, manga, sad and sometimes happy books. I give this book six stars
out of five! This book is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Max, or Maximum,
who knows what it is like to soar across the sky followed by her “flock,” in danger of
being picked off by things called Erasers. Reviewed by Ishmael Thomas
Maximum Ride: School’s Out – Forever (Book 2) by James Patterson
If you did not read Book 1, please do. Having saved Angel, Max and the flock head
east to New York City as the Erasers still follow them. The intended audience is for
people who like manga and fast paced, moving stories that have funny parts too. I
will give this one five stars out of five because it has more sad parts than the first
book. Reviewed by Ishmael Thomas
My Love Story (Book 1) by Kazune Kawahara
This book is about Takeo Goda, who is a big person with a big heart. He falls in love
with a girl named Yamato who he saved from a pervert. From there, they start
dating. Let’s just say, they’re the cutest couple since Yamato is such a fragile
blossom, and Takeo is there to protect her, be by her side, and love her. By the way,
there are four books in this series if you want to know about their love life. This
manga is suitable for anime lovers and teenagers in general. I would rate this manga
as five stars out of five because I am an anime lover, and who wouldn’t want to know what love could
do? Reviewed by Ysabelle Cadaba
And coming soon to the Notre Dame Library…
We Should All be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This book is about the author, Ms. Adichie, and how she went through sexism back
in Nigeria, how sexism needs to stop, and how women need to be empowered more.
This book is intended for everyone, but mostly females ages 12 and up. I would give
this book five stars out of five.

REEL BOOKS
Written in 1990 and made into a film three years
later, Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton is a classic
that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
What a wonderfully moving reflection by Mr.
Therriault. Thank you to everyone who signed the
banner and took a moment from their day to
remember those men and women who lost their
lives protecting our country. We continue to hope
for relief from the damage of violence and for
peace throughout the world.
FRENCH EXPO
Bravo! It was an exciting and delicious time in
(Notre Dame’s version of) Belgium and Monaco.
Ms. Dolson and Ms. D’Amico (and their classes!) did
a beautiful job transforming their rooms into
French wonderlands!
SHSM PRESENTATIONS
The library hosted two SHSM presentations this
November. SHSM students were given their
certification in fundraising for attending a day-long
workshop, and they also attended a presentation
focused on human trafficking and non-profit
organizations. Thank you to Ms. Renda, Mr.
Sammut, and the SHSM program for facilitating
these excellent presentations.
GRADE 8 OPEN HOUSE AND TOURS
ND came together to offer a warm welcome to our
potential Grade 8 students during our Open House
and group visits. Thank you to all the staff and
students who made these events successful.
SPANISH NIGHT
Bioengineer John Hammond has opened an island
theme park populated by cloned dinosaurs. A great
idea in theory, but when a Velociraptor kills a park
worker, experts are called in to verify the safety of the
park. They soon realize there’s more cleverness to
these dinosaurs than they thought.
SPECIAL EDITION
Another year, another wonderful event! The
Nicaragua Social Justice team brought their A-game
this month, with silent and live auctions, a
wonderful show, and a fantastic array of food. The
success of this night is sure to help them reach their
fundraising goal! Special thanks to Mr. Sammut and
Ms. Anderson for their amazing work.
