POLONIUS: WHAT DO YOU READ, MY LORD?
HAMLET: WORDS, WORDS, WORDS.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. HAMLET, ACT II SCENE II
January 2016 Vol. 2 Iss. 5
Welcome to a new year! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break filled
with laughter and joy. If, however, your holiday was less-than-awesome, why not
seek out the good and wonderful things in your daily life? Beginning the new year
with a positive outlook can help banish winter blues and bring smiles to the faces of
those around you. Find new adventures; revisit a favourite place, or compliment
someone who’s having a bad day – these are small ways we can all work towards
making the new year happy and prosperous. We wish you luck on your upcoming
exams and joy throughout the new year.
LIBRARY NEWS
BIG IDEAS – SIMPLY EXPLAINED
With a new semester on the horizon, you might be looking to
explore some new ideas! The library is excited to announce more
titles in the Big Ideas – Simply Explained series, including The
Science Book, The Religions Book, The Shakespeare Book, and The
Politics Book. We have a total of eight titles in the series and are
excited to have The Sherlock Holmes Book on order!
This series is fantastic, not only because of the content but the
layout as well. They are fun to look at, and offer just the right
amount of information on each page, with great illustrations
and infographics. Each title explores different topics (or plays,
in the case of The Shakespeare Book) about its subject in an
easy-to-follow timeline format. We love these books and hope
you’ll discover something new within them!
FINAL DUE DATES AND EXAM POLICIES
As the semester wraps up, we remind all staff and students that library items must
be returned and student accounts must be cleared before January 21, 2016.
This is our final due date for semester one. If you wish to continue using an item,
please let Ms. Mallen or Ms. Corbett know, and we would be more than glad to hold
the book until semester two. Students with items not returned or outstanding fines
will be asked to speak with Ms. Corbett at the beginning of their exams to clear their
account. Wishing you all the best of luck on your exams!

FEATURED REVIEW
NOTES IN THE MARGIN
Carry On is a book by American author, Rainbow Rowell. The book follows the
adventures of Simon Snow and Basilton “Baz” Pitch, students of Watford School
of Magicks. Carry On is told from the perspective of many characters, including
Simon’s friend Penelope and even Baz, Simon’s arch-nemesis. The intended
audience of this book are young adults. Out of five, I give this book 4.5 stars. I
enjoyed the book very much and felt that Baz and Simon deserved their own
story (other than Fangirl.) There were many plot twists that left my mouth
agape. Overall, Carry On is an amazing book (because I’m biased and I love Rainbow.)
BRAVO NUIT BLEUE
Another book I would recommend is Fangirl, also by Rainbow Rowell. It
portrays a young collefe student named Cather Avery, who has social anxiety.
She spends most of her time writing her fanfiction (which has become the novel
Carry On), rather than spending time with her twin sister, Wren. Pieces of
Cather’s fanfiction Carry On are shown continuously throughout Fangirl. I would
recommend that anyone read both books; fanfiction lover or not.

Rick Riordan. We’ve added new fantasy
novels like Allies and Assassins and Spelled.
Also on display, you’ll find brand-new realistic
fiction including the best-selling novel Me and
Earl and the Dying Girl. If you’re looking for a
hidden gem, try Love and Other Foreign
Words, or Set You Free. New graphic works
featuring Ant-Man, Batman, and others from
DC and Marvel are now ready to be borrowed,
along with new books in the Runaways and
Naruto series. Graphic books of popular
novels like Monster have also been added.
Not to be left out, we have an array of new
non-fiction titles dealing with history,
geography, and social issues. Series like
Technology Timelines and Major Nations of the
Modern Middle East are sure to excite and
inform! For some high-interest reading, we
suggest Headstrong: 52 Women who Changed
Science – And the World. Come check out
something new today!
Once again, the art department
and students have outdone
themselves with another great
show! Featuring handmade
jewelry, original photography
and paintings, and exceptional
installations, Nuit Bleue was a
resounding success. Proceeds
from the event go to benefit
SickKids Hospital. The library is
honoured to lend its space to
such a wonderful event! Bravo!
ART OLYMPICS WIN
REEL BOOKS:
SPECIAL EDITION – MARVEL
Congratulation to Ms. McArdle and
the Art Olympics team for
organizing this spectacular event!
In 2016, films featuring Deadpool, Captain
Students from the Brampton North
America (and the gang in Civil War), the XEast family of schools were invited
Men, Dr. Strange, and the Sinister Six (from
to participate in activities all day,
Spider-man) are scheduled to be released. In
capping off the day with an event(high) anticipation, we’ve dedicated this
wide stage show! Our ND staff and
month’s Reel Book feature to all things Marvel. students gave our visitors a warm
welcome, and we hope the Art
Olympics choose ND to host again
soon!
Although many of us might think we’ve outgrown the fictitious worlds of comic books,
these stories often tackle large questions
about what it means to be good, how to
overcome and deal with loss, and (of course)
love. While the format might be something we
are unused to, this new year we hope you try
one of the Marvel universe comic books we
have available in the library: Ant-Man,
Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Civil
War, Daredevil (who has his own Netflix
series!), or a biography on Stan Lee (the man
behind many famous Marvel characters.)
JINGLE JAM
Another great year, another great
show! With special surprises (ahem,
Mr. Lai’s dance moves) and
wonderful performances, Jingle Jam
was a rockin’ hit. ND is just bursting
with talent! Thank you to Ms.
Stewart, Student Council and the
entire Jingle Jam team for
organizing this giant, highly
anticipated event!
