LaNave Lent 2015-16 School Year Calendar Additional Professional Activity Day: Monday, April 11, 2016 Lent is a period of forty days during the church’s liturgical year, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends Holy Week. It is a time for Christians to turn away from sinfulness, to have a change of heart, as they prepare for the joyous feast of Easter. It is a time for prayer, penance, sacrifice and works of charity for others. We will be celebrating our Ash Wednesday Liturgy on Wednesday, February 10th at 1:20 pm in our school gym. All family members are welcome to attend. Terms of the recent contract settlement between the teacher federations and the Ministry of Education included the provision of an additional Professional Activity Day for the 2015-2016 school year for both elementary and secondary schools. Recently, boards were directed to schedule this additional Professional Development Day on or before April 15, 2016. In the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, the designated additional Professional Activity Day has been scheduled for Monday, April 11, 2016. First Holy Communion will be celebrated on Sunday April 24, at 12:00 pm at the church. Our students are asked to arrive at the church at 11:30am. Learning and Growing Together with God Lockdown Drill It is a policy in Dufferin-Peel CDSB that all of its schools conduct a “Lockdown Procedure” twice a year. We have scheduled our second lockdown drill for the week of February 8th, 2016. The drill will be conducted with as much sensitivity as possible in order not to cause undue concern with students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Important Immunization Message from Peel Public Health Peel Public Health will be reviewing immunization records of all students at our school. Peel Public Health must have proof that your child has been fully vaccinated (immunized) according to the Ontario immunization schedule. If you receive a letter please ensure that your child has received the required vaccine(s), then give the date(s) your child received these vaccine dose(s) to Peel Public Health immediately to update your child’s record. For more information please call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 or visit www.ImmunizePeel.ca Translation services are available. School Safe Arrival table is supplied with paper and writing tools so you can easily mark his/her name on the lunch. Lunch begins at 11:25 am and we recommend dropping the lunch off prior to that time. Student Information It is very important that we have up to date records of your address, phone numbers and emergency contacts in the event that the school must contact you regarding your child. If there are any changes, please ensure that we have updated information. If your child’s medical condition also changes, please let us know as soon as possible. Dressing for the Weather Just a gentle reminder that students should be continuing to dress warmly for outdoor recesses. Except when the weather is extremely cold or wet, the students will be going outside during the recess and lunch periods. The DufferinPeel Catholic District School policy states that consideration should be given for keeping students indoors during recesses when the wind chill reaches –20C. At –25C students will be kept indoors. Playing outdoors is a pleasant and healthy activity when students are wearing suitable clothing. If your child will be late or absent from school for whatevDry Clothing Reminder er reason, we ask that you call the school to inform us. Late Students Safe School Departure Parents and family members who are picking up children at the end of the day are strongly encouraged to use the Kiss “N” Ride. If you are meeting your child(ren) you are asked to meet them outside the exit that your child(ren) use at recess times. The front foyer has a great number of students exiting at dismissal time and parents and other adults waiting to pick up children can cause congestion and sometimes an unsafe situation. School Access Parents/guardians and visitors please remember to come to the office first if you have a message/school materials for your child. If you are dropping off a lunch please use the lunch drop off table, located across from the office. The A number of students continue to arrive late daily. Any student arriving after 8:40 a.m. is considered late and should be accompanied by an adult. Please make every effort to have your child/ren at school on time. When a child is late he/she misses valuable teaching time. Late arrivals cause disruption to the other students and also to the teacher who has already started the lessons for the day. Developing good work habits and time management skills can maximize a child’s learning potential. Let’s work together to develop these skills. Supervision in the school yard begins at 8:25 am. Bus and School Cancellations Virtue of the Month is RESPECT In the December and January newsletters, information about media outlets who would be announcing school bus cancellations and school closures was included. If you would like to receive another copy please contact the office. If you have access to the internet, you may check the Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) website for cancellation and/or to see if your child(ren)’s bus is delayed and by how long it is delayed. The STOPR website is www.stopr.ca. Parents and Guardians can now sign up to receive automatic e-mail notification of delay and cancellation for their children’s bus run. If you are interested, please go to www.stopr.ca and click on “Your child’s bussing information”. Type in their OEN number which can be found on any of their report cards and provide the other information that is requested. Your child's busing information will appear and underneath this information, there is an area where you enter your email address. (Parents of JK students who do not have a report card can call the school and request the OEN.) . The STOPR website is www.stopr.ca During the month of February, we celebrate the virtue of “Respect”. God has given us the virtues of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us to get along. A person with Respect: Is patient Knows how to wait his/her turn Can calm him/herself down and think before reacting to situations Knows how to avoid physical aggression Can think things through and do what is best for everyone Bullying Prevention Corner – Telling an Adult about Bullying is Not Tattling February's focus is on the difference between tattling and telling. Students will be given a lesson on this topic and be reminded this month during the announcements. In dealing with bullying situations, students are encouraged to use the strategy, ‘telling an adult’. Although this sounds simple and logical, there are many difficulties and roadblocks associated with this strategy. Younger children struggle to understand the difference between telling and tattling, while older children struggle with their desire to deal with the situation independently. The goal of telling an adult is to keep children safe. Students will be given the opportunity to learn to identify the difference between telling and tattling (reporting and ratting), explore reasons students don’t report bullying and understand how to effectively and safely report to an adult. Tattling/ratting is defined as telling in order to get someone into trouble, or telling when there is no one being hurt and Important Notice- Pizza, Sub and Hot Lunches no rule has been broken that could result in a dangerous situation . Eco-News In an effort to continue to support our Eco-Schools "Silver" rating from the Ministry of Education, we continue to work together to find ways to help our environment. Our EcoTeam, the Green Ninja's, have been meeting to discuss new and different ways in which we could maintain our silver status and strive for GOLD! Some of our new initiatives include, Ban the Bottle Mondays, Recyclable Tuesdays and the Golden Garbage Award! Along with these initiatives, we will be continuing: Lights Off everyday at Lunch, whereby the whole school will turn off their lights at lunch from 11:25-12:25 pm to help conserve energy! Also beginning in February, Pauline Vanier will be continuing Wasteless Wednesdays. Students are encouraged to bring all snack and lunch foods in re-useable containers. We are very proud of all the efforts from both our Eco Team and the students at Pauline Vanier School. Go Vikings!!
