April 13, 2016, marks the International Day of Pink. It is a day where communities
across the country can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness of all
forms of bullying. It is a day where we all live a clear message: anyone can bully,
anyone can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it!
Each student and Staff member, wore pink to show that we understand and live this
message! We make an effort to stop bullying and ensure that each person is
included. We are all united! Way to go Providence!

this opportunity to thank you for your donations of nonperishable food items.
Thank you for helping those in need during the Season of
Lent and Easter.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS:
On Wednesday March 23, 2016 we paid homage to the
passion of Christ during the
Stations of the Cross event. Mrs.
Marchese and Mrs. Noce. and students worked hard to convey the
significant message of the events
during the Holy Week!
Students are requested not to bring valuables or items of
importance to school. This includes
CDs, Game Boys, Cells Phones,
expensive sports equipment, etc.
We cannot assume responsibility for
lost or damaged valuables.

from additional review and consolidation of skills.

may register for these programs.
Summer School will take place from July 4 — July 22,
2016 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm each day. Transportation
is provided.
The deadline for applications is May 29, 2015.

ARE YOU MOVING AWAY:
EQAO TESTING FOR
GRADES 3 & 6:
Grades 3 and 6 students will
participate in the Provincial
Education, Quality and Accountability Office testing
between May 25— June 8, 2016.
Attendance is very important and we ask that, if at all
possible, to refrain from making appointments during
this time!
If you are moving before the end of the school year or over
the summer, we would ask that you please inform the
school office as soon as possible so that class lists may
accurately reflect the number of students enrolled and the
space available for growth.
As new neighbours move in, it would
also be appreciated if you would
mention to them that registration
before September is helpful in school
planning.
SUMMER SCHOOL LITERACY CAMP:
PLANNING FOR SEPTEMBER 2016:
A literacy reinforcement program for
students in SK — Gr. 6 is available at
various sites in the Board. Teachers
deliver a balanced literacy curriculum to
help students build literacy skills. There
is a fee for these programs. Your child’s
teacher will need to recommend your
child for this camp. Please contact your child’s teacher
Even before we have completed the present school year,
planning for next September has begun. The Staff will soon
begin the process of developing tentative Class Lists. Care is
taken, based on current information, to place students in an
environment that is felt to be conducive to their social,
psychological and academic growth.

TRAFFIC SAFETY:
As the year progresses at Our Lady of Providence
School, reminders become necessary for drivers to adhere to traffic safety rules in the front of the school, the
Kiss and Ride lanes and parking lot. Please refer to the
attached flyer regarding these important reminders!
Any parent wishing further input is asked to submit their
request in writing prior to May 27, 2016. Please consider the
following guidelines if you wish to submit your request:
 Input must be made in writing to the Principal.
 Frame requests in terms of educational contexts: eg. Your
child’s learning needs/ strengths/ style (information not
already known to the school)/ best learning environment..
 Please do not make requests for specific teachers as
staffing is always tentative and
changes can take place between
now and September.
For your information, teachers will
receive a copy of your letter.
SCHOOL YARD RULES FOR
RECESS AND LUNCH HOUR:
With Staff input and for keeping children’s
safety in mind, a few ‘rules’ have been
developed. We ask that you support student
safety and review the following rules with
your children:
 Keep your hands and feet to yourself
 Manhunt (or like games that are aggressive) are not
permitted
 Football is not permitted
 Soccer is on field only!
 Tag can be acceptable if students are playing safely
(supervisor is to make the determination)
SAFETY-BICYCLES, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLER
BLADES, SCOOTERS ON SCHOOL
PROPERTY:
APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY..PUDDLES:
With the rainy season upon us, there
are puddles and mud in the schoolyard
where children can get wet socks and
clothing. Our school approach is to
contact parents to bring dry clothing.
This is often inconvenient for parents.
Therefore, may we suggest that you
pack an extra pair of socks and track pants in your
child’s backpack in the event that a change of clothing
is necessary.
Bicycle season has arrived. We remind students of
the importance of following traffic safety rules.
Students are reminded that bicycles must be walked on to
the school grounds and must be chained and locked.
Unfortunately, even chained bikes can be quickly removed
by thieves. It is suggested that expensive or hard to replace
bikes remain at home as the school cannot be responsible for
stolen or damaged bicycles. It is the law that all children
wear proper bicycle helmets.
Scooters, skateboards & rollerblades are not
permitted on school property!
THE KIDSSENTIALS HOT LUNCH PROGRAM:
VOLUNTEER CRIMINAL REFERENCE

be taken to the Peel Regional Police headquarters for
processing. Once the CRC is complete, the information is
mailed to the applicant’s home address, or in most cases
are completed the same day. The school only
receives this information when the volunteer

Criminal reference Check in advance, before
you find yourself disappointed!

process.

CHESS TEAM:
On Wednesday April 6th, 2016, the Junior and Intermediate

well, showing good sportsmanship, and won
many of their individual matches. Ms.
Jordan and Ms. Owens would like to
congratulate the following players for a job
well done: Roan, Ashton, Jack, Adam, Lydia, Wevalven,
Bolu, Paige, Peter, Evaline, Mariana, and Karolina.
JUNIOR SPEECH COMPETITION:
On Wednesday, March 9th the Junior Speech Competition took
place at our school. Two students from each of the junior
division classes were chosen to represent their classes. In total
18 students presented their speeches. The judges, Mme.

choosing the top 3.
Congratulations to:
Honorable Mention: Akaylah D., who presented on Why We
Should Not Cut Down Trees
3rd Place: Emilia B., who presented on Meditation
2nd place: Jamie B., who presents on the Fears and Phobias
1st place: Alex Milgram., who present on Time Travel
All candidates did a fabulous job!
LIBRARY NEWS:
We continue to make updates to the physical environment in the
library. We recently purchased new tables and chairs to accompany the
SMART Board. Students were totally surprised to see the new tables
and were happy to have a larger space to read and collaborate with
their peers.
Monday April 11th - Wednesday April 13th our library will be
undergoing its inventory. Any books that continue to be missing will
be the responsibility of the student to replace. We are no longer
accepting used books in lieu of missing books. Students will be
notified of outstanding books as well as the cost to replace them.
The Forest of Reading is coming to a close this month. All students in
Kindergarten to Grade 2 as well as students who participated in the
Silver Birch and Red Maple clubs will be voting for their favourite
book the week of the 18th. The final date to submit the results to the
Forest of Reading is Thursday April 21st. Special thank you goes out
to Ms. Pichur and Ms. Larocque for their time and dedication in
running the Silver Birch program as they helped to foster an even
greater joy and love for reading in our school.
Don’t forget to save the date! Monday May 2nd Our Lady of
Providence will hold its final fundraiser this year from 6:30pm-9:30pm
at the Indigo Chapters at the Bovaird location. A percentage of the
sales from the purchases made this night will go to our school. There
will also be some student performances and activities.
