SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT POSITION DESCRIPTION
ESL Lab Specialist
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT, WORK, SERVICE REQUESTED:
The ESL Lab Specialist will be responsible for setting up the ESL lab for ESL 290 and INS 301 in Room 359D
at Hartnell College; for training the ESL faculty members who will work in the lab; for ongoing maintenance
and support of ESL 290 and INS 301 in Room 359D at Hartnell College according to ESL goals/objectives; for
overseeing the grading, reporting, and closing of the ESL lab at the end of the semester; and for collecting
feedback from various stakeholders including of the lab to inform programming and curricular decisions.
Reports to: Dean Academic Affairs, Languages, Learning Support & Resources (LLS&R)
SAMPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Contact and make arrangements with the Burlington English representative and IT department to
ensure the ESL 290 core curriculum is set up and fully functioning at Hartnell College. Maintain contact
with the Burlington English representative and IT department to receive up-to-date curriculum at
Hartnell College.
2. Contact and make arrangements with the Hartnell IT department and related personnel to ensure the
lab is up and running for the Spring 2015 semester. Maintain contact with the Hartnell IT department,
tutorial lab, SARS-TRAK personnel to ensure a smooth running lab.
3. Coordinate with tutorial services to ensure the bridge between interested tutors who are trained by
that program become eligible to participate in the INS 301 ESL Open Lab Tutoring.
4. Coordinate with college programmers to ensure the SARS-TRAK system for the ESL lab is functioning.
5. Liaise among faculty and Admissions and Records to ensure rosters, add codes, and grading is in line
with the course outline of ESL 290s an INS 301.
6. Organize, update, and maintain the guide book for all faculty to reference to ensure a smooth-running
lab for ESL 290 English in the Lab and INS 301 ESL Open Lab Tutoring.
7. Organize paperwork to facilitate efficient, effective functioning of the lab.
8. Train and email faculty members on the use of the lab, established procedures for the ESL 290 English
in the Lab curriculum, the Burlington English program and curriculum, as well as INS 301 ESL Open Lab
Tutoring procedures.
9. Liaise between the ESL faculty and dean in regards to the ESL lab. Maintain correspondence among ESL
faculty to engender a cohesive faculty team and foster a high quality of instruction that is consistent
for all students who come into the lab.
10. Update, maintain, and triangulate data of students in ESL 290 and INS 301 via the administrative
features in the SARS TRAK system and Burlington English (core curriculum program) along with
information from Admissions and Records to ensure accurate positive attendance records and student
information.
11. Maintain support for ESL faculty answering questions and concerns they have regarding the use of the
lab, established procedures for the ESL 290 English in the Lab curriculum, the Burlington English
program and curriculum, as well as INS 301 ESL Open Lab Tutoring procedures.

12. Maintain the guide-book for all faculty to reference to ensure a smooth-running lab for ESL 290 English
in the Lab and INS 301 ESL Open Lab Tutoring. Organizing paperwork to facilitate the lab.
13. Ensure student progress is tracked and notify instructors of grading and reporting procedures for
positive attendance classes -- ESL 290 and INS 301.
14. Develop and maintain ongoing feedback to collect data on teacher and students’ feelings, thoughts,
and concerns regarding the ESL 290 and INS 301 courses in collaboration with the dean and full-time
ESL faculty.
15. Maintain the ESL lab in working order to establish a clean, safe, and effective learning environment for
the Spring 2014 semester of courses.
16. Execute, coordinate, and facilitate the SLO data acquisition for all four courses and among ESL Lab
faculty.
17. Develop various tools, forms, and activities to assess student progress for the ESL 290s courses and INS
301 tutoring program to better ESL programs at Hartnell College.
18. Extract, synthesize, and analyze SARS TRAK reports, Burlington English reports, and curricular data
reports when necessary to inform programmatic decisions and curricular decisions.

Experience in planning and coordinating ESL Lab activities.
Good organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to plan and follow through on projects.

colleges.
6. Experience in working on a diverse campus and a demonstrated commitment to cultural competence
within an academic setting.
7. Knowledge of the following processes and standards:
a. Accreditation standards
b. Curriculum content and processes for the college
c. Assessment practices and methods (including assessment cycle)
d. Pedagogy—practice and study of teaching
e. Institutional practices (e.g., program review, ability to embed assessment, etc.)
f. College culture
g. Diverse student populations
h. Teaching expertise (including delivering modalities and sensitivity to program differences)
i. Student service issues such as those in DSPS, EOPS, and matriculation enrollment j.
j. Basic descriptive statistics (e.g. sampling)

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT:
1. The initial term of assignment will be one academic year. Continuation in assignment from one semester
to the next will be dependent upon a showing of satisfactory performance and progress.
2. Assignment will commence fall semester 2016 and end at the end of Spring 2017 semester. Time
commitment is expected to be at least 4 - 6 hours per week.
3. Compensation will be a stipend of $4,000/semester.
4. Monthly time and effort reports are required to be submitted to and discussed with supervisor.
