A woman For All Seasons
As we look at the life of Mary we see her constantly reflecting on
the plan God had for her; we see her seeking, searching, loving,
responding to God’s call. Mary as a woman and a mother brings us to reflect
on the meaning of woman and mother in today’s world. Mary listened to
God’s word, reflected on it and acted on it. Today if we are to know God we
must first listen to His word. We must, as it were, open the doors
to our lives and let Him in.

Principal’s Message:
How We Follow the Example of St. Mary
Congratulations to all students and staff for
their participation in our Holy Week Venue;
Palm Monday, Seven Last Words of Jesus,
Stations Of The Cross and The Passion Play.
Special thanks and congratulations go out to M.
Manalo for his lead with his class and L. Gredi’s
class in the students reenactment, the students,
Luisa B., M. Hamilton, D. Doyle, T. Collier for
costumes, music etc., our Techi students, and all
families who attended our performance. We had
a very busy month, so many opportunities and
challenges for our students. Again, I cannot say
this enough, the staff, students, parents and
pastor have been pulling together to make
exciting and challenging things happen at this
school. We look forward to culminating this
school year with additional extra-curriculars, a
complete educational venue, as well as many
other experiences. Thanks to the parents who
bring forth compliments and/or concerns, we
appreciate all feedback, and work towards
positive resolutions.
Farewell to: V. Lobo who contributed to our
school this year not only with her Gr. 2/3 class,
but throughout the school, her personality, talent
and skills will be missed and we wish her all the
best as she continues her career as a catholic
teacher with our board. Welcome back S.
Perruzza, the year went by quite quickly.
J. Ianiero who was covering T.
Gratton’s maternity leave, J. Ianiero is also
expecting a baby, and we thank her for her many
contributions to our school, and wish her best in
her new role-motherhood. We will be
interviewing for a suitable teacher until L.
Nunes returns to this class.
Mary was given the honor of bringing the Son of God into
the world. She also suffered in seeing Him die for the
world’s sins. As Mary stayed with Jesus until He left the
earth, we are comforted knowing that she remains at our
side, from birth until death, while we struggle with the hardships and
challenges of life.
As St. Luke presents Mary to us, “Mary, the ideal disciple, hears the
word of God, she ponders the word of God, she accepts it in faith,
she acts on the word of God, she bears the word of God within her,
she gives life to the word of God, she brings the word of God to
others.” (Scarborough Missions Feb. 2003)
Like Mary, we at St. Monica School encourage all to hear and
ponder the word of God, try to bear the word of God in our hearts,
and give life to it by our actions. We are a service people and all we
try to accomplish at our school and community is done with love.
This love gives life to the word of God within us.
May Devotions to Our Lady
On Sundays: O Mary, the Immaculate conception, you are the
New Eve. All that Adam and Eve longed for-and tried to steal from
God-you give to us as the Mother of God. May we share in your
holiness by our union with you.
On Mondays: At your nativity, O Blessed Virgin, the way by which
earth will be united to heaven is born. By the grace of your birth, we
are led away from our slavery, and are blessed with holy joy.
On Tuesdays: May we live every day, O Blessed Virgin Mary, the
miracle of the Annunciation. United with you may our life be a
constant YES to the presence of the Word made flesh. May we turn
with our yearning to the humanity of God.
On Wednesdays: O Mother of God, may we experience through
you all the graces of the Visitation: you bring Jesus close to us; we
rejoice with new life, your Magnificat becomes our hope.
On Thursdays: O Blessed Mother, God chose you to offer his
fatherly love more generously to the world. You are the Mother of
the Life by which we live-Jesus. He leads us to you. Through your
maternal mediation, all things are made new.
On Fridays: Our Lady of Sorrows, your presence at the cross
instills a grace that displaces horror. Your faith contains a light
greater than any darkness in my heart. Be with me in Calvary.
On Saturdays: O Blessed Lady assumed into heaven, give me the
ability to await God’s future and to abandon myself to the Lord’s
promises. Magnificat-Year Of Faith Companion 20122013 (Father Peter John Cameron, O.P.)

Fr. Jan “Our Good Father”
From May through June we will continue to work with
Fr. Jan on the faith formation of students, families and
staff. Fr. Jan is welcome at our school anytime and he
takes the time to join us for certain events. Fr. Jan
met with our Gr. 8 confirmation candidates during Holy
Week, and we certainly appreciated his presence at
our Passion Play on Holy Thursday. After The
Passion Play we were pleased to present Father with
two cheques. During the season of Lent, St. Monica
students participated in a voluntary Lenten Choice
activity where they had the opportunity to give their
popcorn/cookie money towards the parish toonie
project, statue of St. Jerome. The students presented
Fr. Jan with a cheque for $500.25.
Not only did the students contribute to the St. Jerome
statue, but our School Council also presented a
cheque for $500.00. The School Council raised funds
for school initiatives through a Dance-A Thon, and they
voted to contribute a portion of the funds toward the St.
Jerome Statue. Father wrote a special thank you in
the parish bulletin in regards to our collective statue
contribution.
On May 6 we are looking forward to have Fr. Jan
celebrate our Easter/Spring Mass at St. Jerome Parish,
on May 9 we appreciate the time he will take to attend
our Communal Catholic Education Week presentations
with Burton Manor-honoring and appreciating our
seniors. We are excited for our Gr. 2 students who will
be receiving their First Communion on May 10.
Father’s lead in and participation in many initiatives
and our school and his vision and belief in partnership
in Catholic Education is sincerely appreciated.
7:30-9 p.m. Feel free to join in at the 7 p.m. mass before the
meeting. Each week the students explore their faith, play
games and form many friendships. New members Gr. 8-12
are always welcome.
VIRTUE OF
THE MONTH:
During the month
of May, we celebrate the
virtue of ACCEPTANCE.
Acceptance God wants us
to Be friendly to everyone
we meet. An accepting
person •Is friendly and open
to all God’s people,
regardless of age, beliefs,
gender, culture, or ability.
•Sees the positive traits in
all people, even if s/he
disagrees with them.
•Avoids judging or
stereotyping o stereotyping
others. •Understands that
there may be more than one
way to do one way to do
things. •Sticks up for the
“underdog”. Can you
remember a time when you
were accepting to someone
who was not accepting to you?
A Catholic school is the ideal place to practice and prepare to live a
virtuous life. When we act out these virtues, we will be participating
in our own prayer that: your kingdom come, your will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. (Mt 6:10)

Catholic Education: Serving In The Love Of Christ
Schools and parishes across the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board will host many special events and activities during
the week of May 4th –May 9th as students and staff celebrate
Catholic Education Week. I am among you as one who
serves. (Luke 22-27e)
Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools
are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers,
administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the
faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the
‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a
relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us
by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both
personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing
atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local
parish, our home, or our Catholic school community.
There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education
Week:
Monday – Serve with faithfulness
Tuesday – Serve with humility
Wednesday – Serve with compassion
Thursday – Serve with justice
Friday – Serve with joy
Administrative Assistant Appreciation Day
Wednesday April 23 was Administrative Assistant Appreciation
Day. I would like to publicly thank C. McIntyre and E. Weseloh
for all the things they do on a daily basis for the students,
parents and staff at St. Monica School. We are fortunate to
have both of them with the many qualities they offer our entire
community.

wonderful and loving mother’s day!

Behaviour Expectations
Summer Sun Safety & Dress Code
In order to protect students from heat exposure and ultra
violet rays during hot, sunny weather, parents should
ensure that children wear shirts with short sleeves,
sunscreen every day, and hats when they are outdoors.
Summer Sun Safety & Dress Code
We also need your assistance to help your child make
appropriate clothing choices. The Catholic Code of
Conduct states: "Students are required to dress in a
manner and attire appropriate to the school environment.
Board policy states that all students are expected to dress
in clean, neat and practical clothing. The Dress Code has
been shared with all students. School guidelines are:
•the top of the pants must meet the bottom of the shirt with
no exposure of midriff or undergarments at anytime, even
when they lift their arms
•shorts must be walking shorts which are neither too tight,
too short or tattered
•halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, tank tops/muscle shirts
and mesh shirts should not be worn by any student.
There should be no bare shoulders, (3”/8cm. rule)
•clothing with offensive, suggestive and/or inappropriate
statements or pictures (including advertisements for
alcohol or tobacco products) are not permitted
•sunglasses, hats, headbands and other inappropriate
headwear must be removed before entering the school
building
Your assistance in ensuring your child is dressed
appropriately is appreciated. Students who are not
dressed appropriately may be removed from class and/or
sent home to change.
At St. Monica School, we strive to provide an environment
where all students feel safe, happy and respected. Pupils of St.
Monica School are expected to behave in a manner that reflects
a Christian attitude. The question ‘What would Jesus do?’
provides guidance for making positive behaviour choices.
Behaviour expectations for respectful, safe, conduct and
consequences for inappropriate behaviour are reviewed
regularly with students. All students are expected to work in
cooperation with staff, peers, parents and the parish to build a
safe and caring learning environment. They are expected to
follow our school rules:
Respect God,
Respect yourself,
Respect others,
Respect the environment
These rules apply anytime and anywhere throughout the
school: in the classroom, on the playground, in the
neighbourhood, on the bus and on educational excursions.
Pupils are reminded of the importance of behaviours such as: •
cooperating with staff • not hitting, teasing, bullying or hurting
others • playing safely during recess times • entering and
exiting the school in a safe and orderly fashion • taking care of
school property • leaving personal electronic devices, roller
blades, skateboards, walkmans, scooters, laser pens and
valuables at home • not play fighting or playing tackle sports •
not throwing snowballs during the winter, rocks in the spring,
and regularly dressing appropriately for a Catholic school
setting. Students are reminded of the importance of reporting
inappropriate conduct or concerns to a teacher. They should
not take matters that could result in a physical altercation, into
their own hands. We continue to educate pupils and inform
parents about bullying prevention and virtuous living, and to
work through a progressive discipline model with appropriate
consequences.
Summer Heat
Anti Racism and Equity Plan
The main risk of hot summer weather is that of exposure
to ultra-violet (UV) rays which are a risk factor for the
development of skin cancer and cataracts in later life. The
UV index is the measure commonly used in Canada to
assess the risk on a given day. Parents are encouraged
to send children with hats and protective clothing or to use
sunscreen (with an SPF of 15 or greater) when the UV
index is high.
In following through with board policy at
St. Monica
School we believe that every student is a unique individual
created by God and for God. To this end our respect for all
learners is embedded in the learning process to help all achieve
to their potential considering the various needs, diverse talents,
heritage, background, areas for growth. Co-operation,
tolerance and acceptance are continued requirements at St.
Monica School.

DIFFERENTIATING INSTRUCTION
No two students are the same, and all of our students have varied needs. Therefore, teachers
make it part of their instructional routine to differentiate instruction. What does this look like in your
child’s classroom?
Teachers must address the needs of all Learning
Styles
and tactile learners
Teachers must address the needs of Multiple Intelligences
Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, and Naturalist
Teachers must take into consideration a student’s
Learning Skills and Work Habits
behaviour?
age time to complete tasks?

Through differentiating instruction, teachers provide a
learning environment which may include:

range of clearly labeled reading levels, variety of reading
selections, magazines, posters, varied genres, etc.)
reading area, whiteboards, smart boards, small group
workspaces)
anchor charts, descriptive feedback, classroom expectations posted, posted classroom schedules, etc.)
Differentiating instruction, will also be evident in the teacher’s instructional strategies……
-created with students (editing checklists, vocabulary walls, graphic organizers, text features)
-creating and posting success criteria for lesson expectations and student improvement
of others?
-ended questions

monitor progress towards achieving them?

YOU Make A Difference!!!
Life Is a Gift Today
Before you say an unkind word Think of someone who can't speak.
Before you complain about the taste
of your food
- Think of someone who has nothing
to eat.
Before you complain about your husband or wife
- Think of someone who's crying out
to GOD for a companion.
Today before you complain about
life
- Think of someone who went too early to heaven.
Before whining about the distance
you drive
-Think of someone who walks the
same distance with
their feet.
And when you are tired and complain about your job

CURRENTLY IN GRADES 1, 4 AND 8

Catholic District School Board, these are:
JK – Grade 1
Grades 2 – 4
Grades 5 – 8
Grades 9 – 12
1.0 kilometre
1.6 kilometres

The purpose of this communication is to ensure that parents of students currently in
grade 1, grade 4 and grade 8 are aware that transportation eligibility status for your child may change next year as your
child moves, respectively, to grades 2, 5 and 9. As the distance criteria increases at the noted grade levels, students
who are currently eligible for transportation in grades 1, 4 and 8, may no longer be eligible for transportation when they
move to the next grade level.
Effective June 1, transportation eligibility information for 2014-2015 will be available on
our website. To confirm the transportation eligibility status for your child for the 2014-2015 school year, please access
our website at www.stopr.ca. Access the “Am I Eligible for Transportation?” icon, select 2014-2015 and enter the required address, 2014-2015 grade level, and program information to obtain the transportation eligibility status for your
child.
This notification is provided to advise parents of a potential change in transportation eligibility and, therefore, provide sufficient time for parents to make arrangements to get their child to school, if required.
INTEGRATED RIDERSHIP
Since 2011, Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) has been utilizing integrated ridership on various bus runs. With integrated ridership, students from both Dufferin-Peel and Peel schools ride together on the same buses. All eligible students continue to be transported on runs where integrated ridership is implemented. Integrated ridership is designed to create a more effective and efficient operation of service, is more environmentally friendly and reduces traffic in our communities.
STOPR staff continues to assess additional school communities where integrated ridership may be feasible. STOPR will provide additional information to your school community, if integrated ridership will
be implemented for the 2014-2015 school year in your area.
