Papaloni I sincerely thank everyone for being true partners in catholic education. I have been here for two years and a half, I sincerely thank the excellent staff, students, school council and families for their contributions to Catholic Education and for working as a team in the best interest of all students, curriculum thrusts and extra curricular experiences. Your collective support in appreciating our parking lot and safety changes has not gone unnoticed. I will continue to be honored to serve as your principal next year. Thank-you to all our parents for assisting us to provide the best possible education for your children, our students! Working with the children, parents, the extremely dedicated school council, our Pastor-Fr. Jan, board personnel and the extraordinary St. Monica staff is a true blessing. There have been many interesting times this year, but together as a community we support one another and are blessed for this! Thanks to the parents who bring forth compliments and/or concerns, we appreciate all feedback, and work towards positive resolutions. Remember to try to be kinder than necessary, for everyone we meet may be fighting some kind of battle. “May God, who said, “Let there be light,” create in us each day, the light of faith, hope and love.” FAREWELL AND THANK YOU TO C. Duke “C. Duke” has been a vice principal and administrative partner at St. Monica School for the past year who blessed this community with her many talents, leadership, knowledge, insight, curriculum and technology strengths, problem solving abilities, caring and compassionate personality. It is with mixed emotions that we wish her well in her promotion to Acting Principal at Mary Fix Catholic Elementary School effective September 2, 2014. She had an impact on the lives of many children, staff and families with whom she interacted. Her talents, personality, devotion to the administrative role, leadership and giving nature will be missed, but sincerely appreciated at Mary Fix School. A special welcome to our newly assigned half time Vice Principal J. Vierra for September 2014. We are very excited to have her join our staff and share her leadership style with our community. She comes to us from the Program Department and is extremely knowledgeable in curriculum. She is dedicated to serving our students. Please join me in welcoming J. Vierra! Farewell and Thank you to: T. Deleo, S. Guilherme, K. Fitzpatrick T. Deleo, E. McCarthy and L. Stott who replaced T. Gratton, D. Williams, Y. Chan and C. Briganti on their leaves. We were fortunate that we were able to have them as a part of our staff. Their enthusiasm and contributions throughout the entire school has not gone unnoticed. We wish them all the best as they pursue their teaching careers in our Catholic School Board, and are confident that their skills, talents and compassion will be shared in another community, or possibly ours, yet again. Here’s hoping! The following students received certificates in displaying the Virtue of Kindness; Jack Y., Eugenio F., Salena G., Anuji V., Kwame G., Emily G., Kassidy A.K., Andrew C., Matthew M. The following students received certificates in displaying the Virtue of Love; Chase A., Amari M.D., Dayna P., Alyssa B., Erica L., Dannelle D., Angela S., Jaedon Z.E., and Giselle F. Congratulations to all who exemplified these virtues. Fr. Jan “Our Good Father” Thanks to Fr. J. Kolodynski for his spiritual guidance with our families, staff and students. On May 10 our Gr. 2 students made their First Holy Communion. Father has a unique way of making the students feel welcomed, worthy, and connected to God through his inspirational homily, and treatment of those receiving sacraments, as well as all students. Our Gr. 8 students will receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation on June 12th. Fr. Jan has been a visible presence at our school, meeting with students and visiting with staff. For the month of June we will continue to work with Fr. Jan on the faith formation of students, families and staff. Fr. Jan is welcome at our school at anytime and takes the time to join us for certain events, or just to come by and visit. During Catholic Education Week Fr. Jan celebrated our Easter/Spring Mass, while focusing on Mary Our Blessed Mother, we appreciated celebrating at St. Jerome Parish and we sincerely appreciate Father’s vision and inspirational messages. Our students appreciate Fr. Jan’s impromptu visits as well. The parish, school, home connection definitely works at St. Jerome’s Parish, we are fortunate to have a Pastor so dedicated in serving his flock. On May 28, Fr. Jan celebrated his 42 anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. When a priest is ordained, he is given the responsibility to preach, to teach and when he becomes pastor to govern! At St. Jerome’s, Father Jan has definitely performed his priestly duties of teaching, preaching and governing. St. Jerome Parish Youth News The youth group meets weekly on Tuesday evening from 7:30-9 p.m. Feel free to join in at the 7 p.m. mass before the meeting. Each week the students explore their faith, play games and form many friendships. New members Gr. 8-12 are always welcome. VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: During the month of June, we celebrate the virtue of FAIRNESS. Fairness God wants us to treat each person as we would like to be treated. Fairness… is the ability to be open minded and act in a just and fair way. Fairness allows us to treat others with mercy and compassion - to feel and act with and for another person. When we act out these virtues, we are making the presence of God visible in the world around us. We will be participating in our own prayer that: your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Mt 6:10) Can you remember a time when you were fair to someone who was not fair to you? A Catholic school is the ideal place to practice and prepare to live a virtuous life. “Healthy partnerships achieve a level of understanding beyond the norm, an almost uncanny ability to intuitively “read” each other’s minds.” Thank you to: The Staff Our school has been blessed with this wonderful staff. I thank the staff for all the extras they give to the St. Monica Catholic School Community. The numerous hours, extra curricular activities, dedication and care for your children are commendable. It is known throughout the community that the St. Monica staff are unique in so many areas, we pull together to create an educational and “family” environment. Thank you to: School Council Our school council and all our parents and volunteers are highly commended for the dedication and numerous hours they have assisted at the school. Graduation: Mass, Awards Ceremony Summer Sun Safety & Dress Code In order to protect students from heat exposure and ultra violet rays during hot, sunny weather, parents should ensure that children wear shirts with short sleeves, sunscreen every day, and hats when they are outdoors. Summer Sun Safety & Dress Code We also need your assistance to help your child make appropriate clothing choices. The Catholic Code of Conduct states: "Students are required to dress in a manner and attire appropriate to the school environment. Board policy states that all students are expected to dress in clean, neat and practical clothing. The Dress Code has been shared with all students. School guidelines are: •the top of the pants must meet the bottom of the shirt with no exposure of midriff or undergarments at anytime, even when they lift their arms •shorts must be walking shorts which are neither too tight, too short or tattered •halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, tank tops/muscle shirts and mesh shirts should not be worn by any student. There should be no bare shoulders, (3”/8cm. rule) •clothing with offensive, suggestive and/or inappropriate statements or pictures (including advertisements for alcohol or tobacco products) are not permitted •sunglasses, hats, headbands and other inappropriate headwear must be removed before entering the school building Your assistance in ensuring your child is dressed appropriately is appreciated. Students who are not dressed appropriately may be removed from class and/or sent home to change. Summer Heat The main risk of hot summer weather is that of exposure to ultra-violet (UV) rays which are a risk factor for the development of skin cancer and cataracts in later life. The UV index is the measure commonly used in Canada to assess the risk on a given day. Parents are encouraged to send children with hats and protective clothing or to use sunscreen (with an SPF of 15 or greater) when the UV index is high. UV Index Over 10 Category Extreme Sunburn Time Less than 15 minutes 7-9 High About 20 minutes 4-7 Moderate About 30 minutes 0-4 Low More than one hour Our Grade 8 Graduation Awards will be on Friday June 20 at 6:00 p.m. in our gymnasium. We have put out all unclaimed articles on tables for students to go through. Please remind your child/ren to go through these items. We will display them in our front foyer until June 18th. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity before the end of the school year. Storm Sewers Children playing in and around storm sewers and watercourses, entering storm sewers through the outfalls and entering storm sewers through access covers is dangerous and can lead to a fatality. Please let your children know that water flows in storm sewers and watercourses are unpredictable and may change quickly, that toxic gases may be present, that tragic falls could take place and access is restricted and rescue attempts are difficult. A verdict of the Coroner’s inquest into the accidental death by drowning of students recommends that parents and schools educate students on the dangers of sewers. CREATING CLASSES FOR NEXT YEAR The process for the formation of classes for September 2014 has been tentatively completed. Creating the best and most functional class groupings is a task that requires much thought, consideration and careful planning. Our goal is to establish balanced classrooms. These classes consist of students who will work together and therefore will enrich each other’s learning experiences. Class Placements You will NOT be receiving a tentative class placement with your child’s report card. A placement for grades will be determined, however room numbers will not be assigned. We will work together the last week of August to make tentative plans. Yet again in September, as families continue to move in and out of the school area, we may have to revise the lists. Reorganization may once again be a possibility in September if there is a major change in our enrolment. Final class placements are usually assured by the middle of September. The final day of school for 2014-2015 will be Friday, June 27th. In creating our classes we considered the following: Safety Drills learning styles / work habits gender balance (male/female) balanced academic abilities social, emotional and physical needs Throughout the year, students and staff participate in fire and lockdown practices. During these drills students are instructed on specific procedures to follow. Fire and Lockdown practices ensure that students are aware of procedures should an actual emergency occur. These drills help to ensure the safety of all students, staff, parents and community members that may be visiting the school. student experience in combined class behavioural needs Special Education or English Language Learner Parenting and Family Literacy Centre needs St. Monica School is very proud to continue to host the Parenting and Family Literacy Centre at our school. This program welcomes parents and caregivers with young children from birth to age six to engage in learning and playing together. The program is FREE and will be open Monday-Friday from 9:15 a.m.- 12:50 p.m. in Room 101. Mrs. Appiah-Kubi, the parent worker continues to welcome families. The goal of the program is to help young children make any easier transition to kindergarten, to foster their early literacy and numeracy skills as well as to support parents and care-givers and enable them to be successful in their parenting role. Please note, OLDER siblings are NOT permitted in the Parenting and Family Literacy Centre. during school hours. balance of maturity needs • Staffing is always tentative and changes can take place between now and September. Few, if any schools in Ontario today are without combined grades. Combined grade classes can be beneficial to the students by allowing for appropriate class organization and a balanced number of students in each class. Our teachers and other professional staff carefully construct these combined grades. Many factors are considered, including peer group relationships, previous placements, social, academic and behavioural factors. Programs in schools today are highly specialized, which substantially reduces the impact of combined grade classes. Combined grades can do much to enhance independent work skills among our students. Parents/guardians can assist their child in adjusting to a new placement by giving support and reassurance. Class placements are tentative until the September 2014 enrolment is finalized. St. Francis de Sales This is the moment to continue to teach our faith! In Catholic schools we provide space and time for the holy. Let Us Not Forget! One Solitary Life “Guided by the Spirit…growing as a family” In July we will be celebrating Canada, its history, values, cultures and traditions. This would be a good time to remind ourselves to celebrate our own families. Teach your children what is important about your family’s traditions, history, values and faith. Encourage your children to honor and love who they are as family. “Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.” Families spending time with families creates bonds of friendship and cements communities. Tell your children they also belong to a family of faith. Spend time with extended family, family friends and your parish family; you’ll benefit from all of them! “For when two or three are gathered in my name, I am among them.” Matthew 18:20 Catholic Education We continue to thank our predecessors for their pursuance and convictions. We need to be convinced that Catholic Education is worth holding onto. Our continued partnership will assist in ensuring the existence of our Catholic system. Jeremiah told the people of Israel in captivity“ We forgot who we were” I pray we never forget that, The roots of our tree of Catholic Education are religious, spiritual, and Catholic. This is the moment to continue to teach our faith! In Catholic schools we provide space and time for the holy. For the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, these are: JK – Grade 1 Grades 2 – 4 Grades 5 – 8 Grades 9 – 12 1.0 kilometre 1.6 kilometres 2.0 kilometres 4.8 kilometres The purpose of this communication is to ensure that parents of students currently in grade 1, grade 4 and grade 8 are aware that transportation eligibility status for your child may change next year as your child moves, respectively, to grades 2, 5 and 9. As the distance criteria increases at the noted grade levels, students who are currently eligible for transportation in grades 1, 4 and 8, may no longer be eligible for transportation when they move to the next grade level. Effective June 1, transportation eligibility information for 2014-2015 will be available on our website. To confirm the transportation eligibility status for your child for the 2014-2015 school year, please access our website at www.stopr.ca. Access the “Am I Eligible for Transportation?” icon, select 2014-2015 and enter the required address, 2014-2015 grade level, and program information to obtain the transportation eligibility status for your child. This notification is provided to advise parents of a potential change in transportation eligibility and, therefore, provide sufficient time for parents to make arrangements to get their child to school, if required. INTEGRATED RIDERSHIP Since 2011, Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) has been utilizing integrated ridership on various bus runs. With integrated ridership, students from both Dufferin-Peel and Peel schools ride together on the same buses. All eligible students continue to be transported on runs where integrated ridership is implemented. Integrated ridership is designed to create a more effective and efficient operation of service, is more environmentally friendly and reduces traffic in our communities. STOPR staff continues to assess additional school communities where integrated ridership may be feasible. STOPR will provide additional information to your school community, if integrated ridership will be implemented for the 2014-2015 school year in your area.
