Dec. 2015
Advent is a period of simple living and extra prayer. It is a time to prepare for a new coming of Jesus
Newsletter
our Saviour.
Advent means ‘coming’. At Christmas we will remember Jesus’ first coming, and prepare our hearts for a new
coming.
Jesus is a loving and peaceful Saviour. He calls his followers to make the whole world loving and peaceful.
Advent is a time to reevaluate our priorities, to ‘wake up’ and to walk with God. It is a wonderful opportunity for
active service towards those who are poor in body and poor in spirit. It is a time to set aside differences and unite in
peace and love.
Advent beckons us to go beyond our own misgivings and to reach out to those less fortunate.
• Like the shepherds, let us show we love Jesus by our efforts to be with Him.

• Like the little drummer boy, let us shout to the world, “Gloria in Excelsis Deo.”

Our daily prayers and classroom activities act as reminders throughout Advent, the season for hope and for waiting is
upon us.
At school, staff and students are preparing for the season with Advent wreaths, Liturgies, Christmas stories, artwork,

joyfully awaiting the birth of Christ is very special indeed.

Principal’s Message:
We continue to appreciate your support in working
collaboratively with the school staff and in seeing that your
children carry out their responsibilities as Catholic students. If
you have any concerns about your child, you are encouraged to
contact the teacher immediately to discuss them. J. Vieira and
myself are also available to discuss any concerns or
compliments. We welcome L. Stott as our LTO in S.
Alve’s/C. Thornton’s FDK Class. S. Alves will be at home
on bed rest until the arrival of her second child. We wish her
and her family all the best as they await the new addition to
their family. L. Stott has been in the classroom and is
familiar with the students and the program, her strengths,
talents are appreciated and we are certain you will make her
feel welcome at our school
THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL
“Catholic Schools aspire to a holistic influence in that they
seek to infuse the whole curriculum and the ethos with the
Catholic unifying vision. The Catholic character of a school
is not something extra appended to the otherwise neutral
content of the curriculum, to the otherwise instrumental
process of teaching and the otherwise non-ideological
climate of the school. The distinctively Catholic inspiration
of a school leaves, on the contrary, its internal mark on the
whole curriculum and the ethos of that school.”
Stefaan E. Cuypers A Journal of Catholic
Education and Practice “The Ideal of Catholic
Education in a Secularized Society” June 2004
This is the moment to continue
to teach our faith! In Catholic
schools we provide space and
time for the holy.
Remember to try to be kinder
than necessary,
for everyone we meet may be
fighting some kind of battle.
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH:
HOPE
We believe that God comes to us
as a real human who can show
us the way of life. We
understand that both the world
and its people are from God and
so are essentially good.
Furthermore, God has given us
this Advent season year after
year in order to focus our minds
and our hearts on the good all
around us. Year after year, we are reminded that God chose to
send his Son to us because we are worth it. God knows how
great we can be when we all come together. People of
Hope….Are patient, Know how to wait his/her turn, Can calm him/
herself down and think before reacting, Know how to avoid
physical aggression (hitting, kicking, punching, fighting, etc.)

Fr. Jan “Our Good Father”
On November 3, Fr. Jan had an informational session for parents/
guardians of our Gr. 7 & 8 students, the parental attendance reaffirms our
Catholic faith and true partnerships.
We continue to work with Fr. Jan on the faith formation of students, families
and staff. As a school we continue to work on mass responses, and
appropriate protocol. We look forward to having him preside over our
Advent Mass on Dec. 11th at 10 a.m. at St. Jerome’s Parish. All are
welcome.
St. Jerome Parish Youth News
The youth group meets weekly on Tuesday evening from 7:30-9 p.m. Feel
free to join in at the 7 p.m. mass before the meeting. Each week the
students explore their faith, have fun and explore many topics that are
important to teens. New members Gr. 8-12 are always
welcome.
The Advent Wreath
The season of Advent is upon us and Fr. Jan is sharing an
explanation of the Advent Wreath. The Advent Wreath is one of the
oldest traditions of the Church, probably dating back to the Germanic and
Scandinavian peoples. The circular wreath represents the cycle of thousands of
years from Adam to Jesus, during which the world awaited the arrival of the
Messiah. THE CIRCLE, without beginning or end, teaches us that God 's love and
eternal life are both never ending. THE EVERGREEN is the symbol of life and
hope. It teaches us that the Lord Jesus is our hope for salvation as green is the
Church's colour for hope. The evergreen never changes just as God's love for us
will never change. THE CANDLES symbolize the light of grace given to all peoples
when our Saviour is born. The candles have no meaning unless they are lit. Their
flame gives us light, life and warmth. As Jesus' coming draws near, the brightness
of their light increases each week. The purple candles, like the purple vestments
worn by the priest remind us that this season is penitential, as we make our hearts
ready to celebrate once again, the birth of Christ and hopeful, as we wait with great
anticipation for the Feast of Christmas and the final coming of the Lord. The rose
candle reminds us of joy because we know the Lord is near. The white candle in
the centre represents Christ, our Light. Each of the candles also represents the
following: Candle 1 - purple - Hope and the Patriarchs, Candle 2 - Purple - Peace
and the Prophets, Candle 3 - Rose - Joy and John the Baptist, Candle 4 - Love
and Mary, the Mother of Christ, Candle 5 - Christ, the light of the world.
CONSIDER having your own Advent wreath at home, whether purple and rose, or
simple white candles. Lighting the Advent Wreath as a family each night (at
supper?), dispelling the winter darkness as we prepare to celebrate the feast of
Christmas, can be a focus of prayer for your family this year.
(Please do not leave lit candles unattended!)
I suggest you gather the materials you will need and decide on a place in your
home for your Wreath. BLESSING ON THE SECOND ADVENT FOR YOUR
ADVENT WREATH AT HOME
Dear God
Who by your word created light from darkness, and breathed life into all
your creatures. Bless this wreath and those who use it.
May its light remind us of your presence in our lives. May its green
branches remind us of your faithfulness that never ends.

Stack-AThon
With all the activities that take place at school in the playground, the gym and in sports, accidents happen. Dental
injuries can occur when 2 children accidentally bump heads
or fall. The school board does not carry accident insurance for students. Fall outdoor activities, extra-curricular
and excursions are an additional reason you may wish to buy
student accident insurance. An insurance package was sent
home with your child(ren). This is optional for families. You
may purchase coverage for your child at
www.insuremykids.com or by calling toll free at 1-800-463KIDS (5437). Please direct your questions to a Reliable Life

SCHOOL HOURS: 9:15-3:45
Bell to Bell, Time on Task
Arriving late for class means that a pupil misses a very important part of the day - the time
when instructions for the day’s activities are given, discussed and teaching begins. Entering a classroom late is
embarrassing for a child. It interrupts the lesson for both the
teacher and the other pupils. The habit or custom of punctuality is one that should be established very early in a child’s
school life. School attendance and punctuality are legal
requirements. We ask for your co-operation in ensuring
your child’s regular attendance by arriving before 9:15 a.m.
Bell to Bell, Time on Task!
Lost and Found Items
Ask your children to check our tables in the hallway for missing items by Friday, Dec. 11. All unclaimed items will be
donated to charity after this date.
Catholic School Learning Plan
We believe that every student is a unique individual created by
God and for God. To this end our respect for all learners is embedded in the learning process to help all achieve to their potential

are requirements at St. Monica School. With this premise in mind,
staff have been diligent in working through our Catholic School
Learning Plan in the areas of Literacy, Mathematical Literacy,
Technology, Catholicity, Anti-Racism, and Safe-Caring Schools.
These plans include specific OUTCOMES , inclusive of action
plans and indicators of success. Staff are highly commended for
analyzing data, looking at our demographics and planning appropriately for all our students. You can review our plan on our web
site this December.

Child’s Prayer for Advent
How dark outside!
but see -- a star's in the sky;
Mary and Joseph are passing by.
So let's light a candle to welcome them
as they go on their way to Bethlehem.
We'll light a candle in church each Sunday,
We'll light one candle each week and pray.
O God,
as light comes from the candle,
may the blessing of Jesus Christ come to us,
warming our hearts and
brightening our way.
May Christ our Savior bring life
into the darkness of this world,
and to us, as we wait for his coming.
We'll light a candle in church each Sunday,
We'll light one candle each week and pray.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS
Advent Mass
Please join our school for this special mass at 10 a.m. on Dec. 11th at St. Jerome’s Parish.
This is a great way to celebrate this special liturgical season.
Student Faith Ambassadors
During Advent our students will be collecting money for our school to contribute towards Refugee Relief. For every toonie collected, a paper rosary bead will be distributed to decorate, we will see how many rosaries we complete.
All classes have received an Advent calendar with Daily Advent Challenges, ask your son/daughter to share some of these
challenges at home.
Our Manger will be set up in the foyer, where teachers will bring students to fill the crèche with hay for every good deed.
Gifts Of Warmth Dec. 8-11
We are continuing with our St. Monica School “Gifts of Warmth” tradition. To help those in need this winter
we will be collecting NEW mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, winter headbands, earmuffs, socks, jackets,
snowsuits and neck warmers. The hallways on the first floor will be decorated with yarn. For each new
item a student, community member or staff bring in, they will decorate a cut out mitten and print their name
on it to acknowledge their kind and generous donation. We will give our gifts of warmth to those in need
through St. Vincent De Paul Society or St. Louise Outreach. Special thanks to M. Heitzner, M. Scalise, T. Gratton and the Student Council for coordinating.
Share Life Christmas Store
This year we are continuing with our Christmas Store for Share Life. J. Posa, T. Spremulli, S. Guilherme
and our student faith ambassadors are coordinating this. From Dec. 1-Dec. 4 staff and students will be
donating new or gently used items for our community to purchase for friends and families for Christmas.
Items will range from 25 cents to $10.00. Students will have the opportunity to purchase Christmas Gifts
on Dec. 7and 8. (A gift wrapping station will also be available.) If you care to donate Christmas bags or
wrapping paper that would also be appreciated. ALL PROCEEDS will go to Share Life.
Burton Manor
On December 1, 2, 4, 15, 16 our SNSM class, Hip Hop teams, Student Faith Ambassadors, and Choir will visit Burton Manor to
sing , perform, visit and distribute Christmas Cards for the residents. We are fortunate that we have the support of our families
and the dedication of our staff and students in providing Christmas joy to the Burton Manor residents.
Thank you for assisting us, please enjoy this reflection from your St. Monica Family!
Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened, I had just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself
stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out.
"What are you doing?" I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was
gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know.
He then answered me with a simple statement. "TEACH THE CHILDREN!" I was puzzled; what did he mean? He anticipated my question,
and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree.
As I stood bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas
has forgotten."
Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. "Teach the children that the pure green colour of
the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a
symbol of man’s thoughts turning toward heaven."
He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. "Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago.
God promised a Saviour for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise."
He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. "Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world,
and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness."
Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. "Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the
real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection."
He then pulled from his bag and ornament of HIMSELF. "Teach the children that I, Santa Claus symbolize the generosity and good will we
feel during the month of December."
He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. "Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn
by our Saviour. The red holly berries represents the blood shed by Him."
Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, "Teach the children that God so loved the world that he gave..." Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift. Teach the children that the wise men bowed before the holy babe and presented him with gold, frankincense and myrrh. We
should always give gifts in the same spirit of the wise men."
Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. "Teach the children that the candy cane represents
the shepherds' crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol
that we are our brother's keeper."
He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. "Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious
news of the Saviour's birth. The angels sang 'Glory to God in the highest on earth peace and good will toward men. "
Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL. "Teach the children that as the lost sheep
are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return. Santa
looked back and was pleased.
He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, "Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship Him, Jesus Christ our Lord,
our God."
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
NEWS FLASH FROM THE GREEN GIANTS
(formerly known as the Eco Team)
BAN THE BOTTLE…
WHY YOU ASK?
Our inquiry question for this term is…if plastic water bottles are recyclable, then why are they
bad for the environment? Our research to this question has inspired us to start the BAN THE BOTTLE CAMPAIGN.
What we found…
Most plastic water bottles end up in the landfill and can take up to
700 years to decompose
It uses a lot of oil…17 million barrels of oil are used in the production of
plastic water bottles per year
Plastic is killing the ocean and its inhabitants
Once you bottle and pack all that water it needs to be transported,
adding to pollution and global warming
It uses a lot of energy
We are encouraging St. Monica students to
bring in reusable water bottles.
WASTE/ LOL INSPECTIONS
The Green Giants regularly check each class’ garbage and recycling, as well as
make sure that they are LOL-ING at lunch recess. On the last day of each
month, we create a bar graph to show the school how their class is doing in
terms of waste. Here are our results from the month of October. This bar graph
shows the number of times each class had perfect garbage and recycling. At
St. Monica, LOL= LIGHTS OUT LUNCHES. This allows our school to make use of the
natural light coming from the windows in our classrooms.
VIRTUES ASSEMBLY
The Virtues Assembly on Friday December 11th will have an Eco theme. Please
join us in celebrating the
liturgy, as well as watching
the Green Giants perform the Lorax and the 12 Days of Eco Christmas.
EARTH RANGERS
The Green Giants would like to thank Earth Rangers for coming into our
school. We learned a lot about the importance of protecting biodiversity in Canada.
It’s Cool to Be an Eco-School! This message is proudly brought to you by the Green Giants.
