PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Our Virtue for November is….
CONSCIENCE
The month of November is allows us to remember and
reflect on the passing of the many souls who have left out
life and entered into God’s heavenly kingdom. November is
also a month where we dedicate the many saints and loved
ones who have gone before us while realizing the
contributions of so many. During the month of November,
we also remember the many lives that were sacrificed for our
freedom. We pause and pray for the courageous souls who
have lost their lives in an effort to provide a better life for all
of us. We will remember those of the past and those who
have lost their lives so recently. As our school comes
together in prayer and remembrance we invite and welcome
parents/guardians and community to join in our
Remembrance Day liturgy on Wednesday, November
11th at 10:40 am. This service provides a unique opportunity
to offer our gratitude, prayers and respect to our veterans,
peace-keepers and our God for the gifts of freedom and
democracy.
It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of
November. To summarize some of the wonderful activities
that took place in October they are as follows: Our Junior
faith leaders generously organized the “We Scare Hunger”
food drive, in support of St. Louise Outreach. Our school
community has also raised $620.25 for Project Hope. We
are also proud to announce that our school raised: $2,608.25
for the Terry Fox Foundation.
In October we also celebrated World Teacher’s Day and Bus
Driver Appreciation Day.
Furthermore, over the last two months our students have
been busy participating in cross-country meets, volleyball
tournaments, and our Halloween Dance-a-thon. Our
Halloween Dance-a-thon raised $ 6,523.62 to date. Thank
you for your continued generosity and support of school
activities and events for our students.
In mid-October, Father Jan celebrated a Thanksgiving mass
with our students and recognized those students in Grades 2
and 8 as they prepare for the sacraments of First Holy
Communion, Reconciliation and Confirmation.
Furthermore, our Catholic School Council and parent
volunteers have continued to organize our Pizza Fundraising
Days. We are blessed to have such a committed Council and
group of hardworking volunteers. Thank you to all of our
parents for your ongoing support and commitment to
Catholic education.

During the month of November,
we celebrate the Virtue of
Conscience. Conscience is the
voice of God within us. In
November we are reminded to
always think before acting and to
do the right thing even when it is
not easy.
A person of conscience…
 chooses to do the right thing,
even when it is hard
 takes time to think and pray
before making decisions
 knows that their actions and
decisions affect all those
around them
“Conscience and reputation are two things.
Conscience is due to yourself, reputation to your
neighbour.”

SCHOOL YARD SUPERVISION
PARKING CONCERNS & TRAFFIC
CONGESTION
Unfortunately, we continue to have issues with
motorists speeding and parking illegally during
morning entry and afternoon dismissal. While it is
understood that parking spots are at a minimum and
traffic congestion on Edenbrook Hill Drive can be
quite busy during these times, we are asking for your
cooperation to follow the school rules and rules of
traffic. Student safety continues to be our priority and
therefore we continue to ask for your cooperation.
Please be reminded that the following rules govern the
safety of student delivery and pick-up at St. Angela
Merici School:
1. Bus lanes are for buses only. Cars are not
permitted to park and/or drop off children in these
areas. Please do NOT stop anywhere but the Kiss
and Ride Zone to drop of students. DO NOT drop
off primary students in the bus zone. It is
extremely dangerous.
2. Students are to be dropped off on the sidewalk
side of the Kiss and Ride zone.
A reminder to both parents and students that yard supervision
does not begin until 8:30 a.m.
STUDENT ARRIVAL AND PUNCTUALITY
3. Please do not block or park behind parked
cars in any area.
4. Please do not park in the authorized
Handicapped Parking area unless you have a
permit.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our
students safe!
HOMEWORK HELP
School begins promptly at 8:45 A.M. Students and parents
are reminded that each student has the responsibility to be on
time. Arriving late disturbs the students in the class,
interferes with the program of instruction, and centers
attention on the latecomer. Please help us teach the value of
being on time, as the number of late students continue to be a
concern.
Homework Help is available to students in
grades 7 to 10 who are struggling with math.
Students can log in for extra tutoring or
assistance from Sunday to Thursday from 5:30
p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for one to one help.
3
In order to access Homework Help, students and
parents/guardians may log on to
http://HomeworkHelp.ilc.org. Your child will receive a
Board access code as well as instructions on how to set
up an account from their classroom teacher.
STORAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
OF MEDICATION
A reminder to all parents/guardians regarding the
storage and administration of medication at
school. All students who require medication
must have all necessary forms completed and
signed by a physician, and returned to the office along with
the medication. If additional forms are required they are
available at the school office. Parents are responsible for
ensuring that forms and medication are updated annually for
any student who requires medication to be administered at
school.
TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
All eligible students have been issued an orange
bus card which must remain attached to or kept in their
knapsack. Bus students are expected to ride the bus on a
consistent basis.
Students without tags are not
permitted to ride the bus.
VERBAL TELEPHONE PERMISSION IS
NEVER ACCEPTABLE
INCLEMENT WEATHER AND
TRANSPORTATION
During the winter months, inclement weather may
cause disruption of regular school operations. A
decision to close schools or cancel busses is usually
made by 6:00 a.m. You can obtain information by
listening to the following radio stations:
CKFM 99.9
CFTR 680
CFTO
CJCL 590
CHFI 98.1 FM CBC

WEATHER NETWORK
Make sure the announcement is for the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board. If transportation is
cancelled, the schools will remain open. If buses are
cancelled and parents or guardians choose to bring
their child to school, it is also their responsibility to
pick them up at the end of the day. Under
extraordinary circumstances an announcement may
be made which indicates that all Dufferin-Peel
schools are closed.
CHANGE IN WEATHER
Excursions, Classroom events and
Field Trips
Educational trips and excursions which extend learning
opportunities in curriculum areas do take place. As such,
teachers are required to follow the appropriate Board
procedures. The school requires signed permission forms and
applicable insurance forms/media release forms from a
parent/guardian prior to departing on a trip or participating in
an activity. If on the day of the event your child has not
returned his/her form, and the parents/guardians are unable to
come to the school to sign all applicable permission forms, the
student will remain at the school or may be unable to
participate in the event.
We have been noticing the coming
of the colder weather and we
remind you that children need to
dress appropriately. We recognize
that temperatures can change
throughout the day and suggest that children come
dressed in layers.
During the winter season, many parents are
concerned about school policy on outdoor recess.
It is generally accepted that when the wind chill
factor drops below –25◦C, students should not go
outside for recess. Dufferin-Peel C.D.S.B. policy
uses a wind chill of
4
–20◦C as the determining temperature for modified
recesses. At St. Angela Merici School, students will
remain inside when the wind chill is reported at –25◦C
or lower and we will modify the duration of lunch
recess when the temperature reaches –20◦C. As
always, ensure your child is prepared for the extremes
of Canadian weather.

PreventionWeek
Week–
Bullying
November
November– 16-22,
201415 - 21, 2015
November 15 marks the beginning
of Bullying Awareness and
Prevention Week in Ontario.
Bullying awareness and prevention
efforts are items of great concern
and play a large part in the life of
Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools on an ongoing basis.
On Monday, November 16 at 10:00 a.m., all DufferinPeel Catholic students and staff will join together in one
minute of silence in recognition of all victims of
bullying, including bystanders.
Bullying is defined as a form of repeated, persistent and
aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or
individuals that is intended to cause (or should be
known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to
another person's body, feelings, self-esteem or
reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is
a real or perceived power imbalance.
Schools are encouraged to use this opportunity to
explain the different forms bullying can take. These
include:
Physical – hitting, shoving, stealing or damaging
property
Verbal – name calling, mocking, or making sexist,
racist or homophobic comments
Social – excluding others from a group or spreading
gossip or rumours about them
Electronic (commonly known as cyberbullying) spreading rumours and hurtful comments through the
use of cellphones, e-mail, text messaging and social
networking sites
INDOOR SHOES
In order to keep our students warm and comfortable and
to help keep their workplace clean, please ensure that
your child has a pair of “indoor” shoes at school. It will
reduce the amount of dirt, mud and snow brought
indoors. It is also important because if the fire
alarm goes off they will need to leave the school
right away.
ECO SCHOOL
Our ECO School team is up and
running again. As one of our first initiatives this
year, we ask that students please bring in cookie
and cracker wrappers (Bear Paws, Gold Fish, and
any other Mr. Christie), and coffee bags. Kindly
have your child bring them to school and place
them in boxes under our Eco School bulletin
board. Thank you for your support.
PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES
(PED)
Personal Electronic Devices on Board Premises
and/or Board Sanctioned Events for Educational
Purposes:
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
acknowledges the value of the use of technology
for learning. Students are permitted to register
and use
personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board
premises and/or board sanctioned events for
educational purposes, under the direction of staff
and only with parent/guardian permission.
Students may register their PED for the purpose
of connecting to the board wireless network.
Students are required to adhere to the student
“Personal Electronic Device Used with WI-FI
Network Student Agreement” (GF 337) and the
“Network User Application and Agreement.”
(GF066)
Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board will not be
responsible for any cost incurred through the
use of personal data plans.
7
PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not
interfere with learning; their use must comply with
the Catholic Code of Conduct, board policies
and procedures. Any personal communications
(i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will
continue to be directed through the main office.
Failure to comply with these guidelines may result
in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other
consequences deemed necessary by school
administration.
